La flora vascolare e lichenica della Riserva Naturale Grotta Conza (Sicilia nord-occidentale). – Naturalista sicil., s. 4, 33 (1-2): 3-68.

2009

Vascular and lichenic flora of Grotta Conza Nature Reserve (NW Sicily). Based on field investigation, bibliographic and herbarium researches we present a vascular and lichen flora of Grotta Conza Nature Reserve, a protected area of speleological and antropological interest located along the northern slopes of Pizzo Manolfo, very close the city of Palermo. The main outcrops of the area are represented by limestones of mesozoic and tertiary origin, while, bioclimate can be referred to thermomediterranean thermotype with subhumid ombrotype. Landscape, strongly influenced by the past prolonged historical utilization of the territory, shows total absence of primary woodlands, whose place is now …

An Optimized and Rapid DNA Extraction Method From Leaves of Grapevine Suitable for PCR-DGGE Based Analysis

2010

Molecular techniques and genetic studies require a fair amount of DNA of high quality in order to produce reliable and clear results (Li et al., 2007). In grapevine, the yield and quality of DNA can be significantly affected by secondary metabolites such as polyphenols, polysaccharides and tannins, that may be consistently abundant during the different stages of leaf development (Iandolino et al., 2004). The development of a simple, rapid and reliable method for the extraction of genomic DNA from grape leaves collected at several stages during development, as well as from healthy grape leaves and leaves infected by pathogenic microorganisms, was the main objective of this study. The protoco…

Rivers carry large amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the oceans thereby connecting terrestrial and marine element cycles. Photo-degradation in conjunction with microbial turnover is considered a major pathway by which terrigenous DOM is decomposed. To reveal globally relevant patterns behind this process, we performed photo-degradation experiments and year-long bio-assays on DOM from ten of the largest world rivers that collectively account for more than one-third of the fresh water discharge to the global ocean. We furthermore tested the hypothesis that the terrigenous component in deep ocean DOM may be far higher than biomarker studies suggest, because of the selective photoche…

Understorey plant and soil responses to disturbance and increased nitrogen in boreal forests

2009

Question: How do N fertilization and disturbance affect the understorey vegetation, microbial properties and soil nutrient concentration in boreal forests? Location: Kuusamo (66°22′N; 29°18′E) and Oulu (65°02′N; 25°47′E) in northern Finland. Methods: We conducted a fully factorial experiment with three factors: site (two levels), N fertilization (four levels) and disturbance (two levels). We measured treatment effects on understorey biomass, vegetation structure, and plant, soil and microbial N and C concentrations. Results: The understorey biomass was not affected by fertilization either in the control or in the disturbance treatment. Fertilization reduced the biomass of deciduous Vacciniu…

Soil carbon quality and nitrogen fertilization structure bacterial communities with predictable responses of major bacterial phyla

2014

Abstract Agricultural practices affect the soil ecosystem in multiple ways and the soil microbial communities represent an integrated and dynamic measure of soil status. Our aim was to test whether the soil bacterial community and the relative abundance of major bacterial phyla responded predictably to long-term organic amendments representing different carbon qualities (peat and straw) in combination with nitrogen fertilization levels and if certain bacterial groups were indicative of specific treatments. We hypothesized that the long-term treatments had created distinctly different ecological niches for soil bacteria, suitable for either fast-growing copiotrophic bacteria, or slow-growing…

Retrieval and assessment of CO2 uptake by mediterranean ecosystems using remote sensing and

2014

Photosynthesis is a process by which carbon and energy enter ecosystems. The knowledge of where, when, and how carbon dioxide (CO2) is exchanged between terrestrial ecosystems and atmosphere is crucial to close the Earth's carbon budget and predict feedbacks in a likely warming climate. Gross photosynthesis (uptake of CO2) by vegetation is responsible for the gross primary production (GPP) of the ecosystem. Normally GPP refers to the sum of the photosynthesis by all leaves measured at the ecosystem scale. John Monteith proposed in 1972 a simple approach that has become the paradigm for understanding GPP. It considers GPP as proportional to the incident short wave radiation (PAR), the fractio…

Surface soil moisture retrieval using L-band SMAP SAR data and its validation

2016

Surface soil moisture was retrieved globally by systematically correcting for the effects of vegetation and soil surface roughness. The retrieval is enabled by employing physical-models of radar forward scattering for individual vegetation types to account for vegetation scattering and absorption, and by constraining the surface roughness effect using time-series observations. The L-band SMAP multi-polarized (HH/VV/HV) σ° data acquired globally every three days were used from mid-April to early July, 2015. Assessment was conducted over 13 rigorously-chosen core validation sites covering a wide range of biomass types, biomass amount, and soil conditions. The soil moisture retrieval reached a…

Plant colonization of bare peat surface - relative importance of seed availability and soil

1992

A field survey on two former peat harvesting sites of similar successional age revealed a marked difference in species composition and a 30-fold difference in biomass of the established vegetation Based on this observation, a field experiment in which the substrate was changed between sites was conducted to examine whether the differences in revegetation were mainly a consequence of differences in seed supply or in substrate quality After three growing seasons, a many hundred-fold difference in plant biomass existed between the transplanted and control plots with the same substrate, but only a small difference between the plots with a different substrate within the site Biological activity …
