CAN HALOPHILA STIPULACEA OUTCOMPETE CYMODOCEA NODOSA? A CASE STUDY OF A MEDITERRANEAN SHALLOW WATER HABITAT
2022
The tropical seagrass Halophila stipulacea (Forsskål) Ascherson entered the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal more than 100 years ago. In the coastal-marine ecosystems the spatial niche of H. stipulacea is often overlapped with that of native Mediterranean Sea seagrasses and therefore it might out-compete them. On the basis of previous observations, we monitored for one year a Southern Mediterranean shallow water habitat (North-Western Sicily Island, Italy, Southern Mediterranean Sea), where H. stipulacea co-occurred with the native seagrass Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson. In this paper we compare sites with (impacted sites) and without H. stipulacea (non-impacted sites) to analy…
Heterotrophic bacteria community and pollution indicators of mussel--farm impact in the Gulf of Gaeta (Tyrrhenian Sea).
2001
Field studies were carried out to determine and compare the impact of organic loads due to the biodeposition of a mussel farm on the water quality and sediment in a coastal area of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Western Mediterranean). A total of five environmental and five microbial parameters were examined from March, 1997 to February, 1998 on a monthly basis at three stations: the first was located under the mussel farm, the second located at about 40 m away from the mussel farm, while the third designed as a control was at about 1-km. No clear changes in the physical characteristics of the water masses were observed, comparing the three sampling sites and the water column generally showed homogene…
Searching for the competitive ability of the alien seagrass Halophila stipulacea with the autochthonous species Cymodocea nodosa
2023
The tropical seagrass Halophila stipulacea (Forsskål) Ascherson, 1867 entered in the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal more than 100 years ago. In coastal-marine ecosystems the spatial niche of H. stipulacea is often overlapped with that of native Mediterranean Sea seagrasses and therefore it might out-compete them. Aiming to better understand its invasiveness potential, we monitored a Southern Mediterranean shallow coastal-marine water habitat from August 2010 to August 2011, where H. stipulacea co-occurred with the native seagrass Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson, 1870. Besides, the year-round dynamics of H. stipulacea was also monitored in four periods. To test the hypothesis th…
Synthesis and crystal structure of [(PhenH)(PhenH2)][BiCl6] . 2H2O with different o-phenanthroline protonations.
1998
The reaction between bismuthate oxide and phen (1,10-phenanthroline) in acid medium led to the isolation of the unusual [(PhenH)(PhenH2)][BiCl6] 2H2O derivative, which has been characterized by X-ray analysis and IR spectroscopy. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with a = 8.313(2), b = 9.349(2), c = 9.807(3) A, a = 86.39(3), B = 110.27(3) and y = 106.48(3)°. The crystal structure is made of [BiCl6] 3- anions and [(PhenHXPhenr2)]3+cations. A network of hydrogen bond interactions involving the two clathrated water molecules, the phenanthroline moiety and the chlorines characterizes the entire structure.

Biokinetic Behaviour of Autochthonous Halophilic Biomass at Different Salinity: Comparison Between Activated Sludge and Granular Sludge Systems
2017
The main goal of this study was the evaluation of the impact of increasing salinity on halophilic biomass in forms of flocculent and granular sludge for the treatment of hypersaline fish-canning wastewater, focusing on the metabolic behavior of autotrophic biomass. For this purpose, two sequencing batch reactors, one with aerobic granular sludge (GSBR) and the other with flocculent activated sludge (SBR) were monitored. In both reactors, a halophilic biomass was cultivated from a real saline wastewater collected from a fish-canning industry. The salt concentration was stepwise increased (2 gNaCl L-1) from 30 gNaCl L-1 to 50 gNaCl L-1. Therefore, ammonia and nitrite uptake rates for granular…

Segmentation of MR brain images with bias artifact
2009
Brain MR Images corrupted by RF- Inhomogeneity (bias artifact) exhibit brightness variations across the image. As a consequence, a standard Fuzzy C-Means (fern) segmentation algorithm may fail. In this work we show a new general-purpose bias removing algorithm, which can be used as a pre-processing step for a fern segmentation. We also compare our experimental results with the ones achieved by using E2 D - H U M filter, showing an improvement in brain segmentation and bias removal.
Information flow in EEG source networks in epileptic children with focal seizure activity
2019
Scalp electroencephalographic (EEG) signals are influenced by several factors, including volume conduction and low spatial resolution, which can jeopardize the validity of brain connectivity analysis performed on the raw recordings. One possible solution is to identify, starting from scalp EEG signals, the underlying cortical source activations, and to apply connectivity metrics on the reconstructed source time series. In this work, the dynamics of information flow between cortical EEG signals obtained after source reconstruction were assessed in children suffering from focal epilepsy. In a group of 10 children with focal seizures, 5-second windows of the 19-channel EEG were obtained in the…
