A coupled map as a model of the dynamics of the magnetotail current sheet

2001

Abstract A magnetic field model of the magnetotail current sheet in the form of a coupled-map lattice (CML) is presented. It is continuously driven (“running”) and based on the MHD diffusion equation. Solar wind vBS data (solar wind speed multiplied by the southward component of IMF) are used for driving the model, and it is shown to exhibit perturbations (avalanches) with power-law scalings in their distributions of duration and size. Such distributions may indicate self-organized critical (SOC) behavior. Furthermore, it is shown that the power spectra of the model outputs are of bicolor power-law form with different slopes for high and low frequencies. Although the “running” model gives p…

A multispacecraft analysis of a small-scale transient entrained by solar wind streams

2009

The images taken by the Heliospheric Imagers (HIs), part of the SECCHI imaging package onboard the pair of STEREO spacecraft, provide information on the radial and latitudinal evolution of the plasma compressed inside corotating interaction regions (CIRs). A plasma density wave imaged by the HI instrument onboard STEREO-B was found to propagate towards STEREO-A, enabling a comparison between simultaneous remote-sensing and in situ observations of its structure to be performed. In situ measurements made by STEREO-A show that the plasma density wave is associated with the passage of a CIR. The magnetic field compressed after the CIR stream interface (SI) is found to have a planar distribution…

Nonlinear energy dissipation in a cellular automaton magnetotail field model

1999

A magnetic field model of the magnetotail current sheet based on cellular automaton (CA) is presented. The present isotropic model is a continuously driven, two-dimensional running CA. The model has a physical interpretation in terms of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, and features self-organized critical (SOC) behavior with power-law scalings both in durations and sizes of instabilities (avalanches). The model has nonlinear energy dissipation, and shows avalanches with and without an external trigger. Thus the model reproduces some of the statistical features recently observed in the magnetotail.

Cohesive-frictional interface in an equilibrium based finite element formulation

2020

The Hybrid Equilibrium Element (HEE) formulation, with quadratic stress field is defined in the class of statically admissible solutions, which implicitly satisfy the homogeneous equilibrium equations. The inter-element equilibrium condition and the boundary equilibrium condition are exactly imposed by considering a quadratic displacement fields at the element sides, as an interfacial Lagrangian variable, in a classical hybrid formulation. The displacement degrees of freedom are independently defined for each element side, where a cohesive-frictional interface can be embedded. The embedded interface is defined by the same stress fields of the hybrid equilibrium element and it does not requi…

Regularized Euler-alpha motion of an infinite array of vortex sheets

2016

We consider the Euler- $$\alpha $$ regularization of the Birkhoff–Rott equation and compare its solutions with the dynamics of the non regularized vortex-sheet. For a flow induced by an infinite array of planar vortex-sheets we analyze the complex singularities of the solutions.Through the singularity tracking method we show that the regularized solution has several complex singularities that approach the real axis. We relate their presence to the formation of two high-curvature points in the vortex sheet during the roll-up phenomenon.

New solutions of the hamiltonian and diffeomorphism constraints of quantum gravity from a highest weight loop representation

1991

Abstract We introduce a highest weight type representation of the Rovelli-Smolin algebra of loop observables for quantum gravity. In terms of this representation, new solutions of the hamiltonian and diffeomorphism constraints are given. Assuming the locality of the quantum hamiltonian constraint we show that any functional depending on the generalized link class of the disjoint union of arbitrary simple loops is a solution. Finally we argue that this is the general solution in the irreducible representation space.

A simple microsuperspace model in 2 + 1 spacetime dimensions

1992

Abstract We quantize the closed Friedmann model in 2 + 1 spacetime dimensions using euclidean path-integral approach and a simple microsuperspace model. A relationship between integration measure and operator ordering in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation is found within our model. Solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation are exactly reproduced from the path integral using suitable integration contours in the complex plane.
