Hepatitis E virus-induced primary cutaneous CD30(+) T cell lymphoproliferative disorder.

2017

International audience; BACKGROUND & AIM:Several types of unexplained extra-hepatic manifestations, including haematological disorders, have been reported in the context of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection. However, the underlying mechanism(s) of these manifestations are unknown. We provide evidence that HEV has an extra-hepatic endothelial tropism that can engage cutaneous T cells towards clonality.METHODS:A patient with a CD30(+) cutaneous T cell lymphoproliferative disorder (T-LPD) and biopsy-proven chronic HEV infection received three rounds of oral ribavirin treatment, administered either without or with interferon, and eventually achieved a sustained virologic response (SVR). Patholo…

Assessment of ISO Method 15216 to Quantify Hepatitis E Virus in Bottled Water

2020

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is one of the causative agents of water-borne human viral hepatitis and considered in Europe an emerging zoonotic pathogen. Analysis of bottled water through a standard method validated for HEV can contribute towards the risk management of this hazard. Putting some recent reports by the European Food Safety Authority in place, this study aimed to assess the performance of the concentration and extraction procedures described in ISO 15216-1:2017 for norovirus and hepatitis A virus on HEV detection. Following the ISO recommendation, the bottled water samples were spiked using serially diluted HEV fecal suspensions together with mengovirus as process control and concent…

Viability RT-qPCR to Distinguish Between HEV and HAV With Intact and Altered Capsids

2018

The hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging pathogen showing a considerable increase in the number of reported cases in Europe mainly related to the ingestion of contaminated food. As with other relevant viral foodborne pathogens, real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is the gold standard for HEV detection in clinical, food, and environmental samples, but these procedures cannot discriminate between inactivated and potentially infectious viruses. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a viability PCR method to discriminate between native, heat-, and high-pressure processing (HPP)-treated HEV using the hepatitis A virus (HAV) as a cultivable surrogate. To thi…

Hepatitis E virus in lettuce and water samples: A method-comparison study

2017

The hepatitis E virus (HEV), which is an increasing cause of acute viral hepatitis in Europe, is a zoonotic virus that is mainly transmitted through contaminated water, consumption of raw or undercooked meat from pigs or wild boar, blood transfusion, and organ transplantation. Although the role of HEV transmission through contaminated produce has not been confirmed, the presence of HEV has been reported in irrigation waters and in vegetables. The present study used a World Health Organization (WHO) international standard and clinical samples to evaluate the performance characteristics of three RT-qPCR assays for detection and quantification of HEV. Two of the evaluated assays provided good …

Family violence and mental health in a sample of Finnish health care professionals : the mediating role of perceived sleep quality

2019

Background Family violence (FV) is a prevalent health issue around the world and health care services have an important role in both recognizing and treating the consequences of violence. However, FV experiences among health care professionals themselves have not been investigated much. We also lack specific knowledge on the associations between FV and mental health. Aim The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence and effects of FV in a sample of Finnish health care professionals. In addition to analysing direct connections between different types of FV and mental health, the mediating effect of sleep quality was also taken into account. Methods The study followed a cross‐sec…

Physical fitness profile in female horseback riders.

2019

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to examine the levels of endurance and neuromuscular performance variables in female horseback riders. METHODS: 52 female Finnish riders were involved (age 29.4±8.9 yrs, height 1.68±0.06 m, weight 67.5±10.0 kg), 19 show-jumping riders (SJ) and 33 eventing riders (E), riding-time minimum of 4 times/week, jumping level of minimum 1.06±0.11m. The measurements were maximal bilateral isometric leg press force (MVCLP), maximal unilateral isometric knee extension (MVCKE) and flexion forces (MVCKF), countermovement jump (CMJ), maximal isometric force of the trunk extensor and flexor muscles (MVCE, MVCF), weight distribution of the body (WD), handgrip…

Effects of strength vs. endurance training and their combination on physical performance characteristics in female horseback riders

2020

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of strength (S), endurance (E) and concurrent strength and endurance (SE) training on neuromuscular and cardiorespiratory characteristics during the 12-week volume-equated protocols in female horseback riders. METHODS: Subjects (N=44) (29.4±8.9 yrs) were assigned to S (n=11), E (n=11), SE (n=13) and control (C) (n=9) groups. Training consisted of progressive S, E or SE training 3x/week and riding exercise 4-6x/week. The measurements included maximal isometric bilateral leg press force (MVCLP) and EMG of VL and BF muscles, rapid isometric force production (0-500ms), maximal force of trunk extensor/flexors (MVCE/MVCF), countermo…
