Optimization of dual-core and microstructure fiber geometries for dispersion compensation and large mode area
2009
We investigate dual concentric core and microstructure fiber geometries for dispersion compensation. Dispersion values as large as -59 000 ps/(nm km) are achieved, over a broad wavelength range with full width at half maximum exceeding 100 nm. The trade-off between large dispersion and mode area is studied. Geometries with an effective mode area of 30 microm2 and dispersion -19 000 ps/(nm km) and 80 microm2 with -1600 ps/(nm km) are proposed.

We present an easy and efficient analytical method to design 160 Gbits/s densely dispersion-managed optical fiber transmission systems using Gaussian and raised cosine RZ ansatze.
Polarization mode dispersion and vectorial modulational instability in air silica microstructure fiber
2002
The birefringence of an air-silica microstructure fiber has been studied by measurement of the fiber polarization mode dispersion (PMD) over the wavelength range 545-640 nm. The experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with vectorial numerical calculations, assuming an elliptical core with an eccentricity of 7%. We also report controlled experiments studying nonlinear vectorial modulation instability in the fiber, yielding 3.9-THz modulational instability sideband shifts that are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on the calculated fiber dispersion and PMD characteristics.
Actively mode-locked fiber ring laser by intermodal acousto-optic modulation
2010
We report an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser. A simple and low-insertion-loss acousto-optic modulator driven by standing flexural waves, which couples core-to-cladding modes in a standard single-mode optical fiber, is used as an active mechanism for mode locking. Among the remarkable features of the modulator, we mention its high modulation depth (72%), broad bandwidth (187 GHz), easy tunability in the optical wavelength, and low insertion losses (0.7 dB). The narrowest optical pulses obtained were of 95 ps time width, 21 mW peak power, repetition rate of 4.758 MHz, and 110 mW of pump power.
Characterization of fiber nonuniformities with ppm resolution using time-resolved in-fiber acousto-optics
2014
Time-resolved acousto-optic interaction using flexural waves enables the characterization of fiber nonuniformities along sections of about 1-2 m. A resolution better than 10 ppm of fiber diameter and core refractive index is demonstrated.
Design and optimization of broadband tapered optical fibers with a nanofiber waist
2010
The control over the transmission properties of tapered optical fibers (TOFs) is an important requirement for a whole range of applications. Using a carefully designed flame pulling process that allows us to realize preset fiber radius profiles, we fabricate TOFs with a nanofiber waist. We study the spectral transmission properties of these TOFs as a function of the taper profile and the waist length and show how the transmission band of the TOF can be tuned via different fiber profile parameters. Based on these results, we have designed a nanofiber-waist TOF with broadband transmission for surface spectroscopy of organic molecules. Moreover, our method allows us to analyze the loss mechani…
Correction to ‘Secondary structure determination of conserved SARS-CoV-2 RNA elements by NMR spectroscopy’
2021
The current pandemic situation caused by the Betacoronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (SCoV2) highlights the need for coordinated research to combat COVID-19. A particularly important aspect is the development of medication. In addition to viral proteins, structured RNA elements represent a potent alternative as drug targets. The search for drugs that target RNA requires their high-resolution structural characterization. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, a worldwide consortium of NMR researchers aims to characterize potential RNA drug targets of SCoV2. Here, we report the characterization of 15 conserved RNA elements located at the 5' end, the ribosomal frameshift segment and the 3'-un…
Recurrent Mutations in the Basic Domain of TWIST2 Cause Ablepharon Macrostomia and Barber-Say Syndromes
2015
Contains fulltext : 153827.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS) and Barber-Say syndrome (BSS) are rare congenital ectodermal dysplasias characterized by similar clinical features. To establish the genetic basis of AMS and BSS, we performed extensive clinical phenotyping, whole exome and candidate gene sequencing, and functional validations. We identified a recurrent de novo mutation in TWIST2 in seven independent AMS-affected families, as well as another recurrent de novo mutation affecting the same amino acid in ten independent BSS-affected families. Moreover, a genotype-phenotype correlation was observed, because the two syndromes differed based s…

Abstract Five new organotin(IV) complexes of compositions [Me 2 SnL 1 ] ( 1 ), [Me 2 SnL 2 ] n ( 2 ), [Me 2 SnL 3 ] ( 3 ), [Ph 3 SnL 1 H] n ( 4 ) and [Ph 3 SnL 3 H] ( 5 ) (where L 1 = (2 S )-2-(( E )-(( Z )-4-hydroxypent-3-en-2-ylidene)amino)-3-(1 H -indol-3-yl)propanoate, L 2 = (2 S )-( E )-2-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)-3-(1 H -indol-3-yl)propanoate and L 3 = (2 S )-( E )-2-((1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene)amino)-3-(1 H -indol-3-yl)propanoate were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The crystal structures of 1 – 4 were determined. For the dimethyltin derivative 2 , a polymeric chain structure was observed as a result of a long Sn∙∙∙O contact involving the exocyclic carbony…
