E.O.-based estimation of transpiration and crop water requirements for vineyards: a case study in southern Italy

2014

An efficient use of water for irrigation is a challenging task. From an agronomical point of view, it requires establishing the optimal amount of water to be supplied, at the correct time, based on phenological phase and water stress spatial distribution. Indeed, the knowledge of the actual water stress is essential for agronomic decisions, vineyards need to be managed to maintain a moderate water stress, thus allowing to optimize berries quality and quantity. Methods for quickly quantifying where, when and in what extent, vines begin to experience water stress are beneficial. Traditional point based methodologies, such those based on Scholander pressure chamber, even if well established ar…

Vipp1: a very important protein in plastids?!

2011

As a key feature in oxygenic photosynthesis, thylakoid membranes play an essential role in the physiology of plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Despite their importance in the process of oxygenic photosynthesis, their biogenesis has remained a mystery to the present day. A decade ago, vesicle-inducing protein in plastids 1 (Vipp1) was described to be involved in thylakoid membrane formation in chloroplasts and cyanobacteria. Most follow-up studies clearly linked Vipp1 to membranes and Vipp1 interactions as well as the defects observed after Vipp1 depletion in chloroplasts and cyanobacteria indicate that Vipp1 directly binds to membranes, locally stabilizes bilayer structures, and thereby ret…

A comparative study of mechanical resistance of two reciprocating files

2019

Background To evaluate the cyclic fatigue resistance of two different Nickel-Titanium instruments, Reziflow (Komet, Brasseler GmbH & Co., Lemgo, Germany) and WaveOne Gold (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland). Material and Methods Two groups of 20 different NiTi endodontic instruments of identical tip size of 0.25 mm were tested; Reziflow and Wave-One Gold primary. Cyclic fatigue testing was performed in a stainless steel simulated root canal manufactured by reproducing the instrument’s size and taper. A simulated root canal with a 90 degrees angle of curvature and 5 mm radius of curvature was constructed for the instruments tested. The centre of the curvature was 5 mm from the tip …

Deciliation: A stressful event for Paracentrotus lividus embryos.

1998

In this report, by using mono- and two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis, we demonstrate that deciliation on sea urchin embryos induces a stress response. Deciliation indeed causes not only the activation of ciliary subroutine, but also a transient decrease of bulk protein synthesis. This decrease is in agreement with our previous results on heat shock response in sea urchin, although deciliation does not induce the expression of the same main hsp set. We were able to characterize one main deciliation-stress protein of 40 kDa whose expression is transiently induced by deciliation and whose localisation is likely to be nuclear.

Nuclear Translocation of Papillomavirus Minor Capsid Protein L2 Requires Hsc70

2004

ABSTRACT Minor capsid protein L2 of papillomaviruses plays an essential role in virus assembly by recruiting viral components to PML bodies, the proposed sites of virus morphogenesis. We demonstrate here that the function of L2 in virus assembly requires the chaperone Hsc70. Hsc70 was found dispersed in naturally infected keratinocytes and cultured cells. A dramatic relocation of Hsc70 from the cytoplasm to PML bodies was induced in these cells by L2 expression. Hsc70-L2 complex formation was confirmed by coimmunoprecipitation. The complex was modulated by the cochaperones Hip and Bag-1, which stabilize and destabilize Hsc70-substrate complexes, respectively. Cytoplasmic depletion of Hsc70 …

(DIS)Assembly and Structural Stability of mtHsp60 and its Precursor NaÏve Form

2015

Heat shock protein 60kDa is a molecular chaperone (GroEL human homolog) that assists protein folding in mitochondria (mtHsp60). It is synthesized in the cell cytoplasm as a higher molecular weight precursor form (p-mtHsp60) containing a N-terminal targeting sequence, that is cleaved after import into the mitochondrial matrix [1, 2].It has been established, and demonstrated by various techniques, Hsp60 can accumulate in the cytosol, in various pathological conditions (i.e., cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases). The cytosolical Hsp60 accumulation mechanism may occur with or without mitochondrial release concomitantly, so that in the cytosol the two types of 60 kDa chaperonin proteins, (m…

Heat shock protein-antigen fusions lose their enhanced immunostimulatory capacity after endotoxin depletion.

2008

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) induce cross-presentation of antigens by dendritic cells (DC) as well as DC maturation. These properties make HSP antigen complexes good candidates to prime CD8 T cell responses against tumor-associated antigens. In this study, we analyzed four different members of the HSP70 family fused to a fragment of ovalbumin (OVA) as a model tumor antigen. E. coli-derived recombinant HSP70-OVA fusion proteins efficiently primed antigen-specific cytotoxic T cells in short-term in vivo immunization assays. Because of concerns that the adjuvant effect of HSPs may be due to endotoxin contamination, we studied this issue in detail. Induction of OVA-specific cytotoxicity was signi…

Enhanced susceptibility to cytotoxic T lymphocytes without increase of MHC class I antigen expression after conditional overexpression of heat shock …

1999

Antigenic peptides have been found associated with heat shock proteins (HSP) including cytoplasmic HSP70 and heat shock cognate protein 70 as well as the endoplasmic reticulum-resident glucose-regulated protein 94. Recently, HSP70 transfection has been reported to increase MHC class I cell surface expression and antigen presentation on mouse melanoma B16 cells (Wells et al., Int. Immunol. 1998. 10: 609). To analyze the effect of HSP70 on MHC class I cell surface expression and lysability of target cells we transfected a human melanoma cell line with the rat Hsp70-1 gene using the Tet-On system for conditional overexpression of HSP70. Induction of HSP70 did not increase cell surface expressi…

INNOVATIVE PHOTOVOLTAIC-THERMAL HEAT PUMP SOLUTIONS FOR DOMESTIC HOT WATER PRODUCTION

2022

With the rapid growth of energy consumption in the building sector and the consequent necessity to develop energy efficiency strategies, the application of heat pump systems seems to be a competitive solution to improve energy efficiency. In particular, air-source heat pump (ASHP) systems assisted by solar energy have drawn great attention, owing to their great feasibility in buildings for space heating/cooling and hot ater production purposes. The complementation system between solar and air energy can solve the poor performance of the air source heat pump under low-temperature conditions and can also make up for the shortcoming of the solar collector as an unstable energy source. Both sol…
