Evaluation of the Economic and Environmental Performance of Low-Temperature Heat to Power Conversion using a Reverse Electrodialysis – Multi-Effect D…

2019

In the examined heat engine, reverse electrodialysis (RED) is used to generate electricity from the salinity difference between two artificial solutions. The salinity gradient is restored through a multi-effect distillation system (MED) powered by low-temperature waste heat at 100 °C. The current work presents the first comprehensive economic and environmental analysis of this advanced concept, when varying the number of MED effects, the system sizing, the salt of the solutions, and other key parameters. The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) has been calculated, showing that competitive solutions can be reached only when the system is at least medium to large scale. The lowest LCOE, at a…

Energy Equalization and the Case of the “nZEB Hotels”

2020

Nowadays, energy equalization is one of the many issues concerning the energy policies on the urban scale and in the perspective of reducing the Urban Heat Island effects (UHI-e). The different economic-financial profiles of the interventions implemented in the buildings having a wide range of climatic locations, typological arrangements, architectural-historical constraints, need to be coordinated within unitary local energy-environmental policies inspired by economic-financial as well as environmental issues. The renovation of existing hotels to achieve a nearly Zero-Energy performance is one of the goals of the 2050 EU’s energy policy. This paper presents the nZEB retrofit case of an exi…

Thermophysical-Property-Based Selection of Tool Protective Coatings for Dry Machining of Steels

2003

A method is proposed for determining the optimum cutting conditions in dry turning of carbon and stainless steels using multilayer coated tools for physical criteria such as the maximum temperature of a cutting tool or maximum heat flux. The modified thermal number describing the tool-chip behavior, is introduced. The correlation between the thermal number and the average tool-chip interface temperature and frictional heat flux is examined for both flat-faced and grooved rake configurations. Although not shown here directly, the thermal barrier effect observed for multilayer coatings with an intermediate Al2O3 layer increases the heat partition to the chip at substantially reduced cutting t…

Prediction of friction and heat flow in machining incorporating thermophysical properties of the coating–chip interface

2004

Abstract This paper deals with an experimental and analytical investigation into the thermodynamically activated effects influencing the behaviour of the multi-layered coated tool rake face during orthogonal cutting of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic steels. Temperature measurements on the tool rake face using a thermocouple-based technique and identification of the contact zone by means of computer image processing were carried out. New methodology for assessing friction and the amount of thermal energy generated when machining with a coated tool insert with natural and restricted contact coupled with a metallic chip, using thermophysical properties of the sliding materials is developed in …

Numerical Assessment of Heating Energy Demand for Office Buildings in Italy

2016

Abstract Buildings energy consumption depends on several parameters, such as climate, envelope typologies, occupant behavior, intended use, etc.; assessment of the energy performance of a building requires substantial input data describing constructions, environmental contexts, thermo-physical properties, geometry, control strategies and several other parameters influencing the thermal balance. In the last years, several numerical approaches dedicated to building simulation have been tested developing specialized software. On the other hand, simplified building models permit the evaluation of indoor conditions and heating/cooling loads with a good level of accuracy and without excessive com…

Vegetation and soil – related parameters for computing solar radiation exchanges within green roofs: Are the available values adequate for an easy mo…

2016

Several studies analyze the thermal performance of vegetated roofs, presenting either mathematical models or experimental quantifications of heat transfer process through them, also showing the effect of vegetation and soil parameters on the thermal and energy performance of this type of roofing system. However, presently the level of availability of these parameters, has not been enough considered. This work intends to investigate this underestimated issue of the green roofs’ thermal modeling, through the consideration of the availability of parameters pertinent to the shortwave radiation exchange, which are adopted by models based on leaf area index (LAI) and on the fractional vegetation …

Assessing the feasibility of cogeneration retrofit and district heating/cooling networks in small Italian islands

2017

Sustainability of energy supply strategies in small islands has been emerging as a severe issue, due to the large margins for improvement and rationalization of the most frequently adopted solutions. In most of the European islands, large amounts of heat are wasted by the operation of engine-based power plants; conversely, heat is produced by boilers (supplied by liquid fuels) or by electric equipment for a number of different uses, like domestic hot water production or space heating in winter. In this paper a techno-economic analysis is proposed to assess the feasibility of CHP-retrofit of the existing power plants and the possible utilization of the recovered heat to supply, via a distric…

PCM thermal storage design in buildings: Experimental studies and applications to solaria in cold climates

2017

Abstract As energy availability and demand often do not match, thermal energy storage plays a crucial role to take advantage of solar radiation in buildings: in particular, latent heat storage via phase-change material is particularly attractive due to its ability to provide high energy storage density. This paper analyzes the performance of a building-integrated thermal storage system to increase the energy performances of solaria in a cold climate. A wall opposing a highly glazed facade (south oriented) is used as thermal storage with phase change materials embedded in the wall. The study is based on both experimental and simulation studies. The concept considered is particularly suited t…

Role of Green Coverings in Mitigating Heat Island Effects: An Analysis of Physical Models

2012

Worldwide, governments are introducing several rules and standards in the aim of limiting the quantity of primary energy for air conditioning of buildings and supporting the use of renewable source of energy for generating thermal and electric energy to be utilized in buildings such as the European Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings [1]. Along with these interventions, another important action takes currently place in the building sector, that is the introduction of passive structural components of the envelope, able to reduce the requirements of energy for air conditioning purposes. Among these building components, the so-called green roofs are becoming more and more interest…

ALE Simulation of Orthogonal Cutting: a New Approach to Model Heat Transfer Phenomena at the Tool-Chip Interface

2007

This paper presents a new procedure to evaluate the global heat transfer coefficient in orthogonal cutting. The knowledge of the actual heat transfer conditions is a fundamental issue as far as the life, tool wear and tool substitution interval are regarded. More in detail, an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach was utilised to model orthogonal cutting process and the numerical simulations were validated by making experimental tests for identifying cutting forces and internal tool temperatures. A mild steel was cut utilising both an uncoated (WC) and a coated (TiN) tool. On the basis of both experimental and simulative data, a consistent model of the global heat transfer coefficient as f…
