The present thesis introduces several ultrasound-assisted digestion methods developed for the determination of toxic element concentrations in ash samples by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Ultrasound-assisted digestion is a quite new technique used for sample pre-treatment purposes, especially in difficult sample matrixes. Elements determined are As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, V, and Zn. Most of the elements determined exist at a trace or ultra trace level in ashes and most are potential risks in the environment or human body even at low concentrations. Node co-activations as a means of error detection : Towards fault-tolerant neural networks

Context: Machine learning has proved an efficient tool, but the systems need tools to mitigate risks during runtime. One approach is fault tolerance: detecting and handling errors before they cause harm. Objective: This paper investigates whether rare co-activations – pairs of usually segregated nodes activating together – are indicative of problems in neural networks (NN). These could be used to detect concept drift and flagging untrustworthy predictions. Method: We trained four NNs. For each, we studied how often each pair of nodes activates together. Työn tavoitteena oli tutkia naiskuvaa suomalaisessa ja ruotsalaisessa Elle-lehdessä kielen kautta. Työssä käytiin läpi lehtien artikkelit kielellisinä kokonaisuuksina sekä vertailtiin artikkeleita keskenään, jotta löydettiin mahdolliset kulttuurilliset erot naiskuvassa. Lyman break and ultraviolet-selected galaxies at z ̃ 1-I. Stellar populations from the ALHAMBRA survey

We take advantage of the exceptional photometric coverage provided by the combination of GALEX data in the ultraviolet (UV) and the ALHAMBRA survey in the optical and near-infrared to analyse the physical properties of a sample of 1225 GALEX-selected Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at 0.8 ≲ z ≲ 1.2 that are located in the COSMOS field. This is the largest sample of LBGs studied in this redshift range to date. According to a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with synthetic stellar population templates, we find that LBGs at z ̃ 1 are mostly young galaxies with a median age of 341 Myr and have intermediate dust attenuation, (Es(B - V)) ̃ 0.20.
