Journalistic practices of science popularization in the context of users’ agenda: A case study of „New Scientist”

2017

The article includes a discussion of two models which describe contemporary communication processes in journalism: agenda-setting and news value, indicating the need to expand their research tools to include qualitative methods, and merging the analyses of the reception and the message. It also includes indications as to the possibility, or even the social relevance, of the methods for applying those research perspectives to analysing journalism popularising science. Later, I present the results of an analysis of the content of a sample of 500 most read popular science texts available on the New Scientist website. I demonstrate which thematic areas were valued by the readers, and what value…

Quantum and Braided Integrals

2001

We give a pedagogical introduction to integration techniques appropriate for non-commutative spaces while presenting some new results as well. A rather detailed discussion outlines the motivation for adopting the Hopf algebra language. We then present some trace formulas for the integral on Hopf algebras and show how to treat the $\int 1=0$ case. We extend the discussion to braided Hopf algebras relying on diagrammatic techniques. The use of the general formulas is illustrated by explicitly worked out examples.

On the graded identities and cocharacters of the algebra of 3×3 matrices

2004

Abstract Let M2,1(F) be the algebra of 3×3 matrices over an algebraically closed field F of characteristic zero with non-trivial Z 2 -grading. We study the graded identities of this algebra through the representation theory of the hyperoctahedral group Z 2 ∼S n . After splitting the space of multilinear polynomial identities into the sum of irreducibles under the Z 2 ∼S n -action, we determine all the irreducible Z 2 ∼S n -characters appearing in this decomposition with non-zero multiplicity. We then apply this result in order to study the graded cocharacter of the Grassmann envelope of M2,1(F). Finally, using the representation theory of the general linear group, we determine all the grade…

Improving point matching on multimodal images using distance and orientation automatic filtering

2016

International audience; Speed Up Robust Features SURF is one of the most popular and efficient methods used for image registration task. In order to achieve a correct registration, a good matching of feature point is required. However in the case of multimodal images, the high and non-linear intensity changes between different modalities led to many outliers (mismatching of detected points) and consequently a fail in the registration. Therefore, in this paper we introduce an efficient method devoted to the detection and removal of such outlier. It's based on an automatic filtering of outliers on both distance and orientation between features points. We tested our proposed method on a set of…

High-pass energy-filtered photoemission electron microscopy imaging of dopants in silicon.

2008

Differently doped areas in silicon can show strong electron-optical contrast in dependence on the dopant concentration and surface conditions. Photoemission electron microscopy is a powerful surface-sensitive technique suitable for fast imaging of doping-induced contrast in semiconductors. We report on the observation of Si (100) samples with n- and p-type doped patterns (with the dopant concentration varied from 10(16) to 10(19) cm(-3)) on a p- and n-type substrate (doped to 10(15) cm(-3)), respectively. A high-pass energy filter of the entire image enabled us to obtain spectroscopic information, i.e. quantified photo threshold and related photoyield differences depending on the doping lev…

Thermoelastic stress analysis of a 2D stress field using a single detector infrared scanner and lock-in filtering

2009

A low resolution, low cost, fast infrared scanner is used to acquire the temperature change along a line on the surface of cyclically loaded samples. The temperature signal is sampled versus time by exploiting the raster scanning movement of the thermocamera single detector. The temperature data is then post-processed by a Fast Fourier Transform based lock- in algorithm implemented in MATLAB ® , in order to filter out the thermoelastic effect induced temperature change. A procedure is also implemented in order to extend the data sampling time by opportunely synchronising successively grabbed data frames. The effectiveness of such synchronisation procedure is first demonstrated by performing…

Depth Enhancement by Fusion for Passive and Active Sensing

2012

This paper presents a general refinement procedure that enhances any given depth map obtained by passive or active sensing. Given a depth map, either estimated by triangulation methods or directly provided by the sensing system, and its corresponding 2-D image, we correct the depth values by separately treating regions with undesired effects such as empty holes, texture copying or edge blurring due to homogeneous regions, occlusions, and shadowing. In this work, we use recent depth enhancement filters intended for Time-of-Flight cameras, and adapt them to alternative depth sensing modalities, both active using an RGB-D camera and passive using a dense stereo camera. To that end, we propose …

Sequential Monte Carlo Methods in Random Intercept Models for Longitudinal Data

2017

Longitudinal modelling is common in the field of Biostatistical research. In some studies, it becomes mandatory to update posterior distributions based on new data in order to perform inferential process on-line. In such situations, the use of posterior distribution as the prior distribution in the new application of the Bayes’ theorem is sensible. However, the analytic form of the posterior distribution is not always available and we only have an approximated sample of it, thus making the process “not-so-easy”. Equivalent inferences could be obtained through a Bayesian inferential process based on the set that integrates the old and new data. Nevertheless, this is not always a real alterna…
