Square spiral staircases appear in Sicily during the 16th century in different contexts and for different purposes. This contribution focuses on two case studies at the “opposite poles” of a casuistry that shares the common characteristics of suspended ramps revolving within a square masonry box around a central void. By analysing these cases we find a probable link with models from Spain. At the same time, they demonstrate a common descent from a constructive culture rooted in the Spanish and Mediterranean stereotomic experience of the early modern age.

ZrO2 Based materials as photocatalysts for 2-propanol oxidation by using UV and solar light irradiation and tests for CO2 reduction

Abstract Bare ZrO2, Ce doped ZrO2 and Er doped ZrO2 samples have been prepared by a hydrothermal process and have been used as photocatalysts for 2-propanol oxidation reaction in gas solid regime. Moreover, some preliminary tests have been carried out for CO2 reduction. The samples were physico-chemically characterized and both bare and doped ZrO2 based materials resulted active for oxidation and reduction reactions by using UV and solar irradiation. The reactivity results have been correlated with the compositional, structural and morphological features of the photocatalysts.

Objectives: Emerging evidence suggests that maternal obesity (MO) predisposes offspring to obesity and the recently described non-alcoholic fatty pancreas disease (NAFPD) but involved mechanisms remain unclear. Using a pathophysiologically relevant murine model, we here investigated a role for the biological clock--molecular core circadian genes (CCG) in the generation of NAFPD. Cavitation is a relevant phenomenon for structural safety and noise level in hydraulic turbines, occurring when water pressure falls below the vapor value at a given temperature. In this case bubbles of vapor grow inside the liquid and move along with it. When the pressure returns above the vapor value the bubble collapses, and the pressure can locally achieve very high values, up to 7000 bars (Kumar & Saini, 2010). Moreover, if the bubble was confined also by the solid wall of a blade, the solid particles suspended in the fluid can be transported by the fluid ones and hit the solid wall at very high velocity, generating erosion.
