Concrete thermal energy storage for linear Fresnel collectors: Exploiting the South Mediterranean’s solar potential for agri-food processes

2018

Abstract Italy is celebrated in the world for its agri-food industries while the process of production of pasta is highly energy demanding and requires both electrical and thermal energy simultaneously. Because most of the Italian factories producing pasta are located in the Southern part of the country, the direct use of thermal energy generated from the sun would be particularly profitable. In this study, the authors examine the possibility of generating by a Solar Industrial Process Heating plant the thermal energy required annually by an existing factory that produces durum wheat pasta located in Sicily (Italy). The hypothesized plant scheme consists of an array of Fresnel linear solar …

Temperature elevations in endosseous dental implants and the peri-implant bone during diode-laser-assisted surface decontamination

2002

The aim of the study was to investigate temperature elevations in the implant surface and the peri-implant bone during simulated surface decontamination of endosseous dental implants with an 809 nm semiconductor laser. Stepped cylinder implants were inserted into bone blocks cut from resected pig femurs. An artificial peri-implant bone defect provided access for the irradiation of the implant surface. A 600 micron optic fiber was used at a distance of 0.5 mm from the implant surface. Power output varied between 0.5 and 2.5 W in the cw-mode. Power density was between 176.9 and 884.6 Wcm -2 . The bone block was placed into a 37 degree(s)C water bath in order to simulate in vivo thermal conduc…

A methacrylic hyaluronic acid derivative for potential application in oral treatment of celiac disease.

2017

Objective: Aim of this work was the synthesis of a methacrylic hyaluronic acid (HA) derivative and the production, via photocrosslinking, of related hydrogels loaded with an endopeptidase intended for a potential oral treatment of celiac disease. Methods: The methacrylic derivative of HA was prepared through a one-pot procedure involving the reaction with ethylenediamine (EDA) and methacrylic anhydride (MA). The obtained derivative, named HA-EDA-MA, was used to prepare photocrosslinked hydrogels loaded with a prolyl endopeptidase derived from Flavobacterium meningosepticum (PEP FM) able to detoxify gliadin. Obtained hydrogels were recovered as gels or freeze-dried powders. Results: Hydrogel…

Fluorinated Heterocyclic Compounds. A Photochemical Approach to a Synthesis of Polyfluoroaryl-1,2,4-triazoles.

2005

The reaction of some fluorinated 1,2,4-oxadiazoles in the presence of methylamine or propylamine has been investigated. The irradiation in methanol or acetonitrile leads with acceptable yields to the corresponding fluorinated 1- methyl- or 1-propyl-1,2,4-triazole.

On the photoreaction of some 1,2,4-oxadiazoles in the presence of2,3-dimethyl-2-butene. Synthesis of N-imidoyl-aziridines

2007

Fhe photochemistry of some 3,5-disubstituted 1,2,4-oxadiazoles in the presence of 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene has been investigated. The irradiation in acetonitrile yielded differently substituted N-imidoyl-aziridines through an aziridination reaction involving an acyliminonitrene intermediate. Pyrolysis of N-imidoyl-aziridines produced the corresponding N-allylamidines through a ring opening process.

Radiation effects in transparent ferroelectric ceramics

1997

Radiation of different types ((gamma) -rays, electrons, neutrons) and fluence has been used to study the defect processes as well as the change of physical parameters in PLZT X/65/35 (X equals 4.5 - 11 at.%) and PbSc 0.5 Nb 0.5 O 3 (PSN) ceramics and to evaluate critical irradiation conditions. Effects on optical (extinction) spectra and dielectric characteristics (polarization, thermal and frequency dependences of dielectric permittivity (epsilon) and losses), dependent on composition and state of phase and polarization have been analyzed by means of annealing in isochronic and prolonged time regimes. A gradual shift of extinction edge to longer wavelengths, reduction of polarization and (…

Photoinduced functionalization of diterpenes: photochemical behaviour of grandifloric acid in methanol and acetonitrile

2004

Abstract Irradiation of grandiflorolic acid (11) at λ=254 nm in acetonitrile gave the two epimers 13 and 14 through a photodecarboxylation reaction of the carboxylic group on C-4. Irradiation of compound 11 in methanol at λ=254 nm provided the transformation of the C-20 angular methyl into a carbomethoxymethyl group. In this case, unlike compounds 13 and 14, only one of the two possible isomers (15) was obtained (equatorial methyl at C-4). A mechanistic approach of this reaction in discussed, and the role of mutual stereochemistry between C-20 methyl and C-19 carboxylic group in determining the course of the reaction is pointed out.

Photoelectrochemical characterization of photocatalysts

2021

Abstract This chapter aims to provide an overview of the photoelectrochemical characterization of semiconducting photocatalysts and, in particular, present Photocurrent Spectroscopy (PCS) as a useful tool in determining the band structure of semiconducting/insulating materials. Some fundamentals on PCS will be provided looking at the experimental setup and underlying its advantages and disadvantages. Then, the photoelectrochemical behavior of a semiconductor/electrolyte junction under irradiation will be presented, also taking into account its crystalline or amorphous nature, highlighting how it is possible to get information on the energetics of the junction. This will be exploited to show…

Photoelectric Current and Dielectric Properties of Barium-Strontium Niobate Ceramics under UV and Visible Irradiation

2015

A study of photocurrent kinetics and dielectric response to infra-low frequencies in the range of the broad phase transition in the Ba0.25Sr0.75Nb2O6 (BSN-75) relaxor ceramics under visible and ultraviolet radiation is reported. Anomalies are revealed in the dependence on field intensity of dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss determined from measurements of polarisation loops before and after illumination. The effects of pyro-electric space charge, polarisation and photovoltaic contributions on behaviour of the measured photocurrent are discussed. Results of the kinetics of photocurrent and dielectric response to infra-low frequency studied at different temperatures are discussed as…
