Managing stress during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and beyond: Reappraisal and mindset approaches

2020

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic is a global public health crisis of a scale not previously experienced in modern times (Kickbusch et al., 2020). Governmental ‘lockdown’ measures aimed at minimizing virus transmission including ‘stay at home’ orders, closure of businesses and places of congregation, and travel restrictions have had a substantive societal impact that permeates almost every facet of daily life (Gostin & Wiley, 2020; Shanafelt, Ripp, & Trockel, 2020). These widespread changes represent considerable sources of stress in the population and will have deleterious effects on mental and physical health going forward. As nations begin to emerge from ‘lockdown’, …

Confirmatory factor analysis and psychometric properties of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire in participants with personality disorders

2021

Emotional dysregulation is a key symptom in participants with personality disorders. The Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) has been studied with nonclinical samples; however, it is necessary to confirm the factorial structure of the ERQ in participants with personality disorders. The aims of the present study were to confirm the factorial structure of the Spanish version of the ERQ and analyse its psychometric properties as well as the association between the ERQ and the Borderline Symptoms List (BSL-23) and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). The overall sample was composed of 250 patients with personality disorders, of whom 195 met the criteria for borderline perso…

Group Analysis and the Self: The Political-Environmental-Transpersonal

1996

In this paper the authors try to put the basis for a new sense of group analysis, meant as the psychology of the field and the future, able to unblock saturated sets of meanings. Their work with groups has shown that there is a time in the group analytic process in which the individual explores the possibility of changeover. That time is also the space for the foundation of a new Self: the space for the difference, the space for the fight for giving and receiving'.

Favouring emotional processing in improvisational music therapy through resonance frequency breathing: a single-case experimental study with a health…

2017

Resonance frequency breathing (RFB) is a form of slow breathing at around six breaths/min, whose immediate effects are to substantially increase heart rate variability (HRV) and to reduce stress levels. Since RFB has already been successfully used on its own to treat various emotional disorders, we wanted to evaluate its effect on emotional processing when used as a preparatory intervention in improvisational music therapy. To do so, we performed a single-subject experimental study with a healthy participant. We hypothesised that RFB would serve both as an emotional catalyst and emotional regulator, the actual outcome depending on the client’s current issues and needs. The study consisted o…

L'efficacité des privatisations françaises : une vision dynamique à travers la théorie de la gouvernance

2004

International audience; A reading of the process of privatization through the corporate governance theory leads to propose a model taking into account, on the one hand, the time dimension of the process of privatization, on the other hand, the contextual, organizational, governance and strategic variables which influence this process. After replicating some traditional tests, we test this model on a sample of French privatized firms and on a seven years horizon. The positive effect traditionally attributed to privatizations is not confirmed. The importance of the effect is subordinated to some of the suggested variables.; Une lecture du processus de privatisation à travers la théorie de la …

Dimensions fractales et réalités périurbaines. L'exemple du Sud de Bruxelles

2004

This exploratory paper aims at showing how the fractal dimension can be used to characterise the spatial structure of built-up areas within the periurban fringe. The southern periphery of Brussels is considered here. Two estimation techniques (correlation and dilation) are applied to surface areas, and one (correlation after dilation) to the borders of built-up areas. They are applied to windows of fixed size. Fractal dimensions are then compared with traditional socio-economic and morphological indicators. The results are interpreted in the context of urban sprawl and polycentric development of the peripheries. These analyses confirm the usefulness of the fractal approach for describing bu…

Port expansion and negative externalities: a willingness to accept approach

2015

Port expansion has been seen as the origin of negative externalities, affecting local residents’ well-being and contributing to the poor public image of ports. In this study, the contingent valuation method is used to estimate the costs borne by local residents as a consequence of the negative externalities derived from the growth of the Port of Valencia (Spain) in the last 30 years. As transport project appraisal has become more complex, this technique complements existing methodologies in this field, such as the social cost benefit analysis and the multicriteria analysis. Given the perceived property rights of families that have been living close to the port for a long time, a willingness…

Microstructure and shear strength evolution of a lime-treated clay for use in road construction

2020

The results of a comprehensive experimental programme are presented for assessing the long-term microstructural modifications and evaluating the effects of microstructural rearrangement on the stress–strain behaviour of a lime-treated high-plasticity clay for road embankments. The stress–strain behaviour at different lime content and curing time was investigated by means of direct shear tests; microstructural analyses were carried out combining Scanning Electron Microscope observations and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry tests. The results show that the stress–strain behaviour of treated clay is strongly dilatant with a high peak of strength, which increases with time and lime content. Furthe…

2000

Democratization is quite a difficult question, from both a methodological and theoretical point of view, especially when international comparisons are aimed at. Must one consider this process like the diffusion of the good, or focus on competition between groups for acceeding to it ? Indicators will not be the same, neither results, according to the perspective adopted. European comparisons show that if a majority of countries has chosen to equalize educational opportunities through opening access to school, less numerous are those which have tried to act more directly upon the inequalities conveyed by its operating. France has chosen the openness strategy with some delay, one factor being …
