Precision exercise medicine: predicting unfavourable status and development in the 20-m shuttle run test performance in adolescence with machine lear…
2021
Objectives: To assess the ability to predict individual unfavourable future status and development in the 20m shuttle run test (20MSRT) during adolescence with machine learning (random forest (RF) classifier). Methods: Data from a 2-year observational study (2013‒2015, 12.4±1.3 years, n=633, 50% girls), with 48 baseline characteristics (questionnaires (demographics, physical, psychological, social and lifestyle factors), objective measurements (anthropometrics, fitness characteristics, physical activity, body composition and academic scores)) were used to predict: (Task 1) unfavourable future 20MSRT status (identification of individuals in the lowest 20MSRT tertile after 2 years), and (Task…

Proactive and reactive dimensions of life-course agency: mapping student teachers’ language learning experiences
2014
Although the concept of agency has received a lot of interest in recent educational research, its significance in language learning biographies as well as contextual and relational aspects of learner agency are still little studied. This paper aims at a more thorough understanding of agency by studying student teachers’ previous language learning experiences. This paper is based on a dialogical analysis of 12 student teachers’ biographical essays describing their relationship with English as a foreign language. The participants are students in a Finnish class teacher and language teacher education programme that uses English as the primary medium of instruction. The study proposes a tripart…
Auditory Profiles of Classical, Jazz, and Rock Musicians: Genre-Specific Sensitivity to Musical Sound Features
2016
When compared with individuals without explicit training in music, adult musicians have facilitated neural functions in several modalities. They also display structural changes in various brain areas, these changes corresponding to the intensity and duration of their musical training. Previous studies have focused on investigating musicians with training in Western classical music. However, musicians involved in different musical genres may display highly differentiated auditory profiles according to the demands set by their genre, i.e., varying importance of different musical sound features. This hypothesis was tested in a novel melody paradigm including deviants in tuning, timbre, rhythm,…
Immunoassays for trifloxystrobin analysis. Part II. Assay development and application to residue determination in food.
2014
Immunochemical assays constitute complementary analytical methods for small organic molecule determination. We herein describe the characterisation and optimisation of two competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays in different formats using monoclonal antibodies to the Quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide trifloxystrobin. Antibody selectivity was evaluated using a variety of agrochemicals and the main trifloxystrobin metabolite. Acceptable tolerance of the immunoassay to methanol, ethanol, and acetonitrile was observed in all cases, whereas a dissimilar influence of buffer pH and ionic strength was found. Moreover, the influence of Tween 20 over the analytical parameters was studi…
OnMLM: An Online Formulation for the Minimal Learning Machine
2019
Minimal Learning Machine (MLM) is a nonlinear learning algorithm designed to work on both classification and regression tasks. In its original formulation, MLM builds a linear mapping between distance matrices in the input and output spaces using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) algorithm. Although the OLS algorithm is a very efficient choice, when it comes to applications in big data and streams of data, online learning is more scalable and thus applicable. In that regard, our objective of this work is to propose an online version of the MLM. The Online Minimal Learning Machine (OnMLM), a new MLM-based formulation capable of online and incremental learning. The achievements of OnMLM in our…
Extreme Minimal Learning Machine
2018
Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Minimal Learning Machine (MLM) are nonlinear and scalable machine learning techniques with randomly generated basis. Both techniques share a step where a matrix of weights for the linear combination of the basis is recovered. In MLM, the kernel in this step corresponds to distance calculations between the training data and a set of reference points, whereas in ELM transformation with a sigmoidal activation function is most commonly used. MLM then needs additional interpolation step to estimate the actual distance-regression based output. A natural combination of these two techniques is proposed here, i.e., to use a distance-based kernel characteristic in M…
Cooperative Assistance in Bifunctional Organocatalysis: Enantioselective Mannich Reactions with Aliphatic and Aromatic Imines
2012
both of which contain a thiourea moiety (Scheme 1).The catalysts are capable of deprotonating suitable nucleo-philes, such as activated carbonyl compounds. This proton-transfer reaction generates an ion pair, which is composed ofthe protonated catalyst and the anionic nucleophile interact-ing through hydrogen bonds. At least one of the NH moietiesin the protonated catalyst is involved in activating theelectrophilic reaction partner.
A synthetic molecular pentafoil knot
2011
Knots are being discovered with increasing frequency in both biological and synthetic macromolecules and have been fundamental topological targets for chemical synthesis for the past two decades. Here, we report on the synthesis of the most complex non-DNA molecular knot prepared to date: the self-assembly of five bis-aldehyde and five bis-amine building blocks about five metal cations and one chloride anion to form a 160-atom-loop molecular pentafoil knot (five crossing points). The structure and topology of the knot is established by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography, revealing a symmetrical closed-loop double helicate with the chloride anion held at the centre…
Oxidation of substituted phenols using copper(II) metallatriangles formed through ligand sharing
2014
Reaction of N(2),N(2')-bis-[(1-butyl-benzimidazol-2yl)methyl]biphenyl-2,2'-dicarboxamide (L) with CuX2⋅nH2O in methanol leads to the assembly of four trinuclear Cu(II) complexes with the general formula [Cu3(L)3X3]⋅3X⋅nH2O⋅mMeCN, where X=Cl(-), Br(-), NO3(-) and C6H5COO(-) and n=0-5, m=0-8 (compounds 1-4, respectively). The structure of one of the complex contains three Cu(II) metal ions at the corners of an equilateral triangle. Each of the copper(II) are coordinated through two benzimidazolyl imine N-atoms and two amide carbonyl O-atoms and the apical position is occupied by an anionic nitrate ion, leading to a distorted square pyramidal environment. The magnetic susceptibility data were …
