Optimal timing of power line rights-of-ways management for the conservation of butterflies
2012
Habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation are the main threats to biodiversity. Human activities also create new habitat types that might fulfil ecological requirements for a variety of species. This study investigates whether the vegetation clearing (=shrub and tree cutting) on drained mire patches on power line rights-of-ways (ROWs) keep plant communities in an early successional stage and thus provide habitats for mire specialist and non-mire butterflies. It was further studied what would be the optimal clearing interval in terms of butterfly species richness and abundance. The results show that tree height, especially the height of birch, increases linearly over the 7-year period fol…
Research onOrobanche crenata management in sicily from the 19 th to the early 20 th century
2006
In order to offer hints for new research, the agronomic techniques used to manageOrobanche crenata in Sicily in the late 19 th and early 20 th Century are examined; the publications in which they were originally described can be obtained only with difficulty. Hand pulling, resistant cultivars and late sowing are the techniques used nowadays. Screening for resistance to broomrape of the traditional cultivars of broad bean, and for the influence of sowing density on broomrape infestations, is still to be done.

Chromosome studies in North-Western Sicily males of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus
2016
Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), known as red palm weevil (RPW) was accidentally introduced and established in Sicily (Italy) since 2005. As like in other Mediterranean sites, RPW has been causing extensive damage to palm trees and on its new host Phoenix canariensis Chabaud (Canary Island palms), acquired concomitantly with the colonization of the area. RPW shows a good ecological plasticity and slightly but significant morphological polymorphism (colour patterns and length of the rostrum in male individuals) that can be appreciated within different geographical populations. The aim of the present work was to investigate if this ecological plasticity and phenotypic variability can be a…

Two-Dimensional Indium Selenide for Sulphur Vapour Sensing Applications
2020
Surface-to-volume ratio in two-dimensional (2D) materials highlights among their characteristics as an inherent and intrinsic advantage taking into account their strong sensitivity to surface effects. For this reason, we have proposed in this work micromechanically exfoliated 2D nanosheets of InSe as an optical vapour sensor. As a proof of concept, we used 2-mercaptoethanol as the chemical analyte in vapour phase to monitor the change of the InSe photoluminescence (PL) before and after exposure to the analyte. For short vapour exposure times (at low analyte concentration), we found a PL enhancement of InSe nanosheets attributed to the surface localization of Se defects. For long vapour expo…
Diversity of ankA and msp4 genes of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Slovenia.
2015
Granulocytic anaplasmosis is a tick transmitted emerging disease in Europe and worldwide. The agent, Anaplasma phagocytophilum is transmitted by ticks of the genus Ixodes and causes infections in humans and domestic animals. The analysis of different target genes showed that in nature several genetic variants of A. phagocytophilum were present. The purpose of our study was to genetically characterize A. phagocytophilum strains from eight humans, 16 dogs, 12 wild boars, one bear and 18 tick pools from Slovenia. Therefore, the ankA and msp4 genes of A. phagocytophilum were chosen. The same genetic ankA and msp4 variant of A. phagocytophilum was detected in humans, wild boar and a part of the …
Effects of a new IGR-ovicide on a heteropteran (Oncopeltus fasciatusDallas) and lepidopteran (Manduca sextaJohansen) insect
1987
A new insect ovicide (Ov. 165049), 4-methoxy-benzoic acid propargylester, synthesized by BASF (Ludwigshafen) was tested on Oncopeltus fasciatus and Manduca sexta. In the case of O. fasciatus also the effects on last-instar larvae and adult bugs were studied. Topical application of 40 μg/larva dissolved in acetone caused a mortality exceeding 50% at day 1 after treatment. The few animals which developed into imagines did not reproduce. A treatment with 4 μg/larva had no severe impact on metamorphosis and reproduction. Adult O. fasciatus received doses of 40 μg, 20 μg and 4 μg per animal. The high dose caused mortality of 50% at day 1 as in larvae. Mating and egg deposition did not occur in s…
