Explanatory factors of student performance in online tests for the continuous assessment: Is attendance really important?
2018
In the European Higher Education Area, the educational model focuses on the student and the role of Information and Communication Technologies is crucial for the learning and teaching process. This study identifies the characteristics of the students according to their performance in the online tests carried out in a subject of Financial Accounting in the groups taught in English of the Degrees of Business Administration and Economics in a University from XXX. The objectives of this study are to explore the determining factors for student performance in online tests. Several analyses are carried out for all the marks and for a separated sample considering only the tests where the mark is at…
Administration, Scoring, and Reporting Scores
2013
This chapter covers administration, scoring, and reporting scores from language tests and examinations. Procedures typically used in major language examinations and small-scale classroom testing and assessment are both covered. It is argued that the administration, scoring, and reporting procedures are highly dependent on the purpose and stakes of the assessment. Selected national and international guidelines of good practice are reviewed to see what they have to say about these phases of the assessment process, and examples are given on how, for example, high stakes certification and achievement tests differ from teacher-based formative and diagnostic tests. The review considers how the sk…
Competencies in ICT of teachers and their relation to the use of the technological resources
2010
Over the past decade the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have represented a transformation of education policies that have entailed important investments. However, the teacher, as a key element in the integration process of ICT, still does not feel trusted this process. One of the most outstanding causes of this deficit confidence is the lack of teaching staff competence in the ICT. Therefore, the aim of this paper is a study of the teachers’ competence on ICT and their relation to the use being made of these technologies, both professional-personal and with their students. For it a survey design has been used. The target population constitutes the teaching staff of centers…
Career practitioners' conceptions of competency for social media in career services
2014
This article reports findings from a phenomenographic investigation into career practitioners' understanding of competency for social media in career services. Sixteen Danish and Finnish practitioners with experience using social media in career services were interviewed in focus groups. Competency for social media in career services was conceived as (i) an ability to use social media for delivering information, (ii) an ability to use social media for delivering career services, (iii) an ability to utilise social media for collaborative career exploration and (iv) an ability to utilise social media for co-careering. The findings can be used to develop pre-service and in-service training of …
Teaching on Hybrid Courses : Insights from Commercial Online ICT-Training
2018
Information and communication technology (ICT) has evolved rapidly during the last decades. These technological advancements have enabled new ways of teaching and learning, such as online courses, where students attend training using their own computer equipment. Previous studies have shown that the student satisfaction and learning outcomes do not differ between the classroom and online students. However, our previous study conducted on hybrid courses, where part of the students was present in a classroom and part are participating online, revealed some issues related to teaching methods and technical difficulties. In this study, we researched how teachers of a commercial ICT-training orga…
The Health Challenges at Menopause and Midlife: Sustainability, ICT Technology and Patient Empowerment
2017
The implementation of lifestyle is a most cost-effective approach to the management of menopause. Physical activity, for example, may be an appropriate measure to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and other non-communicable diseases affected by menopause. The difficulty with physical activity and other lifestyle measures is often the poor long-term adherence. There are several studies addressing the issue and describing the main variables that impact adherence. Both changes in the strategy, activity program, or even behavioural changes supported by psychological techniques, have been demonstrated to have an impact, though still limited.
ICT applications for improving the generation and distribution efficiency of a small mediterranean island
2016
The paper presents a study on the opportunities offered by ICT for improving the efficiency of the generation and distribution system of a small island. The island taken into consideration is the Italian Lampedusa island. In the paper, the power distribution system of the island is described and the summer and winter daily load profiles are examined in order to define the more suitable control actions for improving the generation and distribution efficiency of the power system. Finally the architecture of an idoneous control system for the smart grid is proposed and an evaluation of the purchase and installation costs of components and devices for the transition of a traditional house towar…
ICT Diffusion and Foreign Direct Investment
2011
This chapter investigates the impact of inward and outward FDI on ICT diffusion in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions for the period 1996-2008. The results indicate that while inward FDI has generally had a positive and significant impact on ICT diffusion in Asia-Pacific economies, its impact on the Middle Eastern countries has been detrimental. In contrast, the results of this study also show that outward FDI has had, in general, the inverse effect, it has been in general positive and significant for the Middle East countries but insignificant for Asia-Pacific economies.
Organizational Ethics, Position and Their Relationship to Gender, Before and During Pandemic
2021
This research investigates the levels of organizational ethics (OETH) among knowledge workers (KW), using their work information and communication technologies (ICT) with their executive position (supervisor/subordinate), in regional enterprises in Poland before and during the COVID19 pandemic. We analyzed levels of OETH and its three dimensions as organizational optimism (ETO), corporate social responsibility (CSR), top management action (TMA). We conducted our study twice, using an online survey among 137 KW before and 127 KW during a pandemic, combining random and snowball sampling to select data. We used multivariate statistical methods such as analysis of variance and causal moderation…
Telemedicine and mobile health with integrative medicine in developing countries
2014
International audience; African Home-based Care (AHC) and African Traditional Medicine (ATM) provide a number of self-sustainable primary health care workers in a rural region with the appreciation of ancestral knowledge and its contextual management. Even though most urban residents are able to afford and use conventional medicine to large extent, the implementations of modern medicine in rural areas and in poor peri-urban areas are limited. Our proposal is on how telemedicine solutions could enhance AHC and ATM practices and facilitate simultaneous delivery of both modern and traditional healthcare with evident added value to the recipients. This is indeed a fresh angle, as information an…
