Cardiac arrest and coronavirus disease 2019

2022

The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the cardiovascular system has been highlighted since the very first weeks after the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 identification. We reviewed the influence of COVID-19 pandemic on cardiac arrest, both considering those occurred out of the hospital (OHCA) and in the hospital (IHCA).An increase in OHCA incidence occurred in different countries, especially in those regions most burdened by the COVID-19, as this seems to be bounded to the pandemic trend. A change of OHCA patients' characteristics, with an increase of the OHCA occurred at home, a decrease in bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external d…

Decrease in annual incidence of acute coronary syndrome and restructuring of coronary care in Latvia

2014

Abstract Introduction Improvement in coronary heart disease prevention and treatment, as well as availability of coronary care facilities, is important for the reduction of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) incidence. Centralized acute coronary care system is crucial to provide optimal hospitalization and management algorithm for ACS patients. Aim The aim of the current report was to assess the annual incidence of ACS and the quality of acute coronary care in Latvia. Methods The Data from The Latvian Registry of Acute Coronary Syndromes were analyzed covering the time period from 2005 to 2010. Results Since the year 2005 the annual incidence of hospitalization due to ACS decreased significantly…

Anti-inflammatory properties of simvastatin on leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions following hemorrhagic shock

2002

Background Hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) have been shown to lower serum cholesterol levels. Recent studies reported that statins have vasculoprotective effects independent of their cholesterol-lowering properties. We studied simvastatin for its ability to modulate leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions under acute inflammation following hemorrhage and reperfusion. Methods The effects of simvastatin on leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions were observed by intravital microscopy in the rat mesenteric microcirculation and by immunohistochemical analyzes. Simvastatin (50 μg/kg or 100 μg/kg) was administrated intraperitoneally 18 h before study. Inf…

Diagnosis of chronic anaemia in gastrointestinal disorders: a guideline by the Italian Association of Hospital Gastroenterologists and Endoscopists (…

2019

Anaemia is a common pathologic condition, present in almost 5% of the adult population. Iron deficiency is the most common cause; other mechanisms can be involved, making anaemia a multi-factorial disorder in most cases. Anaemia being a frequent manifestation in the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, patients are often referred to gastroenterologists. Furthermore, upper and lower endoscopy and enteroscopy are pivotal to the diagnostic roadmap of anaemia. In spite of its relevance in the daily clinical practice, there is a limited number of gastroenterological guidelines dedicated to the diagnosis of anaemia. For this reason, the Italian Association of Hospital Gastroenterologists and E…

Palliative Treatment of Dyspnea With Epidural Methadone in Advanced Emphysema

2005

This study investigated whether epidural methadone perfusion at the thoracic level can mitigate dyspnea in patients with advanced emphysema.Open-label clinical trial without a control group.University hospital. The inclusion criteria were a diagnosis of emphysema, basal dyspnea index (Mahler scale)or = 3, FEV(1)or = 35%, and no indication for pneumoreduction or lung transplantation surgery. An epidural catheter was inserted at the thoracic level connected to a perfusion pump for administering methadone (6 mg/24 h). Assessments were made at baseline, 1 week, and 1 month after catheter insertion.Pulmonary function tests were performed, and determinations were made of arterial blood gas levels, …

Estándares SEA 2019 para el control global del riesgo cardiovascular

2019

One of the main goals of the Spanish Society of Arteriosclerosis is to contribute to a wider and greater knowledge of vascular disease, its prevention and treatment. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in our country and also lead to a high degree of disability and health expenditure. Arteriosclerosis is a multifactorial disease, this is why its prevention requires a global approach that takes into account the different risk factors with which it is associated. Thus, this document summarizes the current level of knowledge and integrates recommendations and procedures to be followed for patients with established cardiovascular disease or high vascular risk. Specifically, t…

Innovations in medical care and mortality trends from four circulatory diseases between 1970 and 2005

2013

Background: Governments have identified innovation in pharmaceuticals and medical technology as a priority for health policy. Although the contribution of medical care to health has been studied extensively in clinical settings, much less is known about its contribution to population health. We examine how innovations in the management of four circulatory disorders have influenced trends in cause-specific mortality at the population level. Methods: Based on literature reviews, we selected six medical innovations with proven effectiveness against hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, heart failure and cerebrovascular disease. We combined data on the timing of these innovations and cause-spe…
