The demand for IPR services - to use or not to use a professional representative

We analysed the use of professional representative services and related outcomes in patent, utility model, design right and trademark filings. We found that: 1) there is a positive association between the use of a professional representative and the likelihood of grant or registration; 2) the demand for professional intellectual property rights (IPR) services is heterogeneous between IPR types: applicants are most likely to hire professional representatives (IPR agents and attorneys) for patents, followed by utility models, design rights and trademarks; 3) individual applicants are less likely to use professional representatives compared to firm applicants. peerReviewed
Stimulating economic growth in the least developed countries: direct cash transfers for the retired via mobile phones

The result of current aid policies is that only a small percentage of foreign aid reaches the poorest of the poor in the least developed countries. Current trends of urbanisation and self-reliance place elderly people in an increasingly difficult situation. This paper aims to stimulate debate by introducing an alternative mechanism for foreign aid. With the help of an economic model, we demonstrate how direct cash transfers to elderly people can spur economic growth. Targeting all elderly people above a certain age minimises selection costs and removes perverse incentives. Telecommunication systems use optical signals to transmit information. The strength of a signal in an optical network deteriorates and loses power as it goes farther from the source, mainly due to attenuation. Frequency-modulation spectroscopy provides ultrasensitive absorption measurements. The technique is especially adaptable to diode lasers, which can be modulated easily, and has been used extensively in the near-infrared and infrared spectral regions. Relationship marketing is based on the establishment and maintenance of continuous relationships between buyer and seller as a source of mutual benefits. Following this approach, customers' evaluations of benefits and monetary and non-monetary sacrifices derived from their relationships with the retailer are crucial for the existence of ongoing and successful relationships. Such a perception may, however, vary greatly depending on the type of service provided. In this paper, we analyse customers' assessments of the benefits and costs of their relationships with four types of retailers.
