Enhanced CDW Transitions in Nb3X4(X = S, Se, Te): Intercalation and Surface Effects

2004

A x Nb 3 X 4 (A = In, Tl, ZnHg; X = S, Se, Te) compounds show CDW instabilities dependent on the type and concentration of intercalate. Tl or In intercalation flattens the Fermi surfaces and supports CDW formation. In the corresponding DOS spectrum the Fermi level is shifted towards coincidence with a small peak, derived mainly from the Nb dz 2 orbital. Localized modulated regions observed in STM images of Nb 3 X 4 at room temperature represent precursor effects to full CDW formation.

Shell structure in large nonspherical metal clusters.

1992

Electronic shell structure of icosahedral and cuboctahedral sodium clusters with 300 to 1500 atoms has been studied using a potential-well approximation for the effective one-electron potential. The results show that icosahedral clusters yield the same shell structure as spherical clusters up to the cluster size of about 500 atoms and that similarities persist until the cluster has about 1000 atoms. The shell structure of a cuboctahedral geometry begins to deviate from that of a sphere when the cluster size is about 100. A study on quadrupole deformations of large clusters shows that surface fluctuations in liquid clusters cannot destroy the shell structure even in the largest clusters.

Convergent transformations into a normal form in analytic Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom on the zero energy surface near degenerate …

2004

We study an analytic Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom, having the origin as an elliptic singularity. We assume that the full Birkhoff normal form exists and is divisible by its quadratic part, being indefinite. We show that under the Bruno condition and under the restriction to the zero energy surface, a real analytic transformation into a normal form exists. Such a normal form coincides with the restriction of the Birkhoff normal form to the zero energy surface up to an order as large as we want.

Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Brain Tumor Surgical Planning: Feasibility in Clinical Setting.

2019

The aim of this study was to introduce resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rest-fMRI) capability for brain tumor surgical planning. rest-fMRI is an emerging functional neuroimaging technique potentially able to provide new insights into brain physiology and to provide useful information regarding brain tumors in preoperative and postoperative settings. rest-fMRI evaluates low-frequency fluctuations in the blood oxygen level–dependent signal while the subject is at rest during magnetic resonance imaging examination. Multiple resting-state networks have been identified, including the somatosensory, language, and visual networks, which are of primary importance for surgical pl…

Municipal Building Regulations for Energy Efficiency in Southern Italy

2014

The building sector is still one of the most energy consuming sectors in Italy, like developed countries in Europe. At European level, the main policy driver related to the energy use in buildings is the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD, 2002/91/EC) and its recast. Through the EPBD in- troduction, requirements for certification, inspections, training or renovation are now imposed in Member States. In order to fulfill the expected changes, local regulations are a key factor aiming at sustainable territorial planning. It is thus required support the issue of local rules at municipal level in order to guide local administrators and technicians and to limit discretional power of …

Interrogative Clauses across CEFR Levels in Finnish and Swedish as an L2

2014

The present study investigates the frequency of three types of interrogative clauses in 329 semi-formal email messages written by language learners of Finnish and of Swedish spoken in Finland. All the written messages were assessed according to the Common European Framework of Reference by trained language professionals. The study is part of a larger research project, Topling, conducted at the University of Jyväskylä. For the purpose of the study, the interrogative clauses were divided into three categories: yes/no questions, wh-questions and subordinate interrogative clauses. We examined the frequencies according to the levels of language proficiency. The findings show that, in both langua…

Freestyle versus butterfly swimming performance – effects of age and sex

2014

AbstractPurpose. Recent studies have suggested that the age of peak freestyle swimming speed is reached earlier in life in women than in men. However, no study has investigated the age of peak swimming speed in other swimming styles such as butterfly. The aims of the present study were to investigate the age of peak swimming speed in elite male and female butterfly and freestyle swimmers at the national level (Switzerland) and the sex differences in both the age of peak swimming speed and swimming speed for both swimming styles. Methods. Results of the elite Swiss swimmers between 2006 and 2010 were analysed using one-way analysis of variance. Results. In butterfly, women achieved peak swim…

Another defence of enumerated types

1991

I claim that enumerations, while of course not strictly necessary, are an elegant and useful facility in modern programming languages. I try to show that arguments recently given against them are weak at best and bogus a t worst, for general-purpose programming. Some related issues on types in programming languages are touched as well. These make it even more questionable whether Oberon marks progress or regress in language design.

Europe's offshore winds assessed with synthetic aperture radar, ASCAT and WRF

2020

Europe's offshore wind resource mapping is part of the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) international consortium effort. This study presents the results of analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ocean wind maps based on Envisat and Sentinel-1 with a brief description of the wind retrieval process and Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) ocean wind maps. The wind statistics at 10 and 100 m above mean sea level (a.m.s.l.) height using an extrapolation procedure involving simulated long-term stability over oceans are presented for both SAR and ASCAT. Furthermore, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) offshore wind atlas of NEWA is presented. This has 3 km grid spacing with data …
