Evaluation of the efficacy of the ‘nasal airflow-inducing manoeuvre’ for smell rehabilitation in laryngectomees by means of the Sniffin′ Sticks test

2011

Clin. Otolaryngol. 2011, 36, 17–23 Objective:  To determine the efficacy of the nasal airflow-inducing manoeuvre (NAIM) as a method for olfactory rehabilitation in laryngectomees by the means of the Sniffin′ Sticks test. Study design:  Prospective open interventional trial. Setting:  Tertiary academic hospital. Participants:  Thirty-seven patients after laryngectomy have been screened and 25 patients have been included into the study. The participant’s sense of smell was tested with the Sniffin′ Sticks test before and after learning the nasal airflow inducing manoeuvre. The individual level of threshold, discrimination and identification (TDI) was determined and the individual threshold, di…

Top-cited articles in cerebrospinal fluid leak (rhinorrhea and otorrhea) (1945–2018)

2021

Abstract Introduction: As scientific knowledge has grown in biomedicine, it has also become necessary to develop tools to manage and understand the body of evidence. In that sense, bibliometrics has become a consolidated discipline for analyzing scientific activity, enabling the characterization of a particular field or area of knowledge by means of the quantification of the bibliographic characteristics of scientific publications. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the most frequently cited articles in the field of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and otorrhea. Methods: The searches took place on the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science platform, which includes the MEDLINE…

Diabetes mellitus, periapical inflammation and endodontic treatment outcome

2012

The possible connection between chronic oral inflammatory processes, such as apical periodontitis and periodontal disease (PD), and systemic health is one of the most interesting aspects faced by the medical and dental scientific community. Chronic apical periodontitis shares important characteristics with PD: 1) both are chronic infections of the oral cavity, 2) the Gram-negative anaerobic microbiota found in both diseases is comparable, and 3) in both infectious processes increased local levels of inflammatory mediators may have an impact on systemic levels. One of the systemic disorders linked to PD is diabetes mellitus (DM); is therefore plausible to assume that chronic apical periodont…

The role of fissula ante fenestram in unilateral sudden hearing loss

2016

The cause of unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) remains unclear in many clinical cases. Perilymphatic leakage through a fissula ante fenestram (FAF) fistula is one possible reason. We present four clinical cases with proven FAF fistula, discovered during surgical exploration. All patients experienced partial hearing recovery after surgical coverage of the fistula. We suggest FAF as a possible site for perilymphatic leakage, representing an anatomical correlate for sudden unilateral SNHL. We recommend early exploratory tympanotomy with special attention to the bony region, anterior to the oval window, in cases of severe sudden SNHL and suspected FAF.

Quality of Life in Sporadic Vestibular Schwannoma: A Review

2009

Quality of life (QoL) measures are increasingly used as outcome measures in the assessment of different treatment options in clinical practice and as endpoints in clinical trials. Methods and questionnaires currently used for QoL assessment in vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients, studies evaluating QoL before and after treatment, studies on patients managed conservatively and studies evaluating facial-nerve-function-related QoL in VS patients are reviewed. Current methodological controversial issues in QoL studies on VS patients include the lack of a planned prospective comparison between QoL values before and after treatment, a need for the inclusion of additional questions along with stan…

Caffeine increases the expression of cystatin SN in human submandibular acinar-like HSG cells

2013

The study aimed at evaluating in vitro the effect of caffeine on expression of cystatin SN, a potential marker of sensitivity to bitterness in humans.Differentiation of human submandibular gland (HSG) cells was induced by culturing cells on Matrigel. Caffeine cytotoxicity was assessed over 3 days by the Resazurin test. Finally, effects of 5, 50 and 100μM caffeine exposure on cystatin SN expression were explored over 3 days by ELISA.At concentrations relevant to human adult plasma levels (5, 50 and 100μM), caffeine did not affect cell viability whether cells were differentiated or not. Cystatin SN levels were overall higher in differentiated cells and increased with time in both conditions. …

Prevalence of human papillomavirus in the saliva of sexually active women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasias

2020

Background The main objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of human papillomavirus-DNA (HPV-DNA) in the saliva of sexually active women with HPV-related cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN) and compare the findings with a healthy control group. The secondary objectives were: 1) to determine the concordance between genital and oral HPV types in sexually active women with HPV-related CIN; 2) to analyze whether sexual habits influence the presence of HPV-related CIN; 3) to determine whether sexual habits influence the presence of oral HPV. Material and Methods Saliva samples were collected from 100 sexually active women, 50 with HPV-related CIN and 50 healthy subjects pres…

Analyses of odontogenic tumours : the most recent classification proposed by the World Health Organization (2017)

2020

Background The fourth edition of the ‘’WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumours’’ was published in January 2017 and includes a classification of odontogenic tumours. This review aims to examine the changes made in this new classification in comparison with the previous classification of 2005. Material and Methods An electronic search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane databases with the keywords “odontogenic tumor”, “WHO classification” and “update”. Studies published from January 2009 to April 2019 with a high level of scientific evidence were included, but studies not published in English, epidemiological studies and studies with a low level of evidence were excluded. Disease scoring systems for oral lichen planus: a critical appraisal

2015

The aim of the present study has been to critically review 22 disease scoring systems (DSSs) on oral lichen planus (OLP) that have been reported in the literature during the past decades. Although the presently available DSSs may all have some merit, particularly for research purposes, the diversity of both the objective and subjective parameters used in these systems and the lack of acceptance of one of these systems for uniform use, there is a need for an international, authorized consensus meeting on this subject. Because of the natural course of OLP characterized by remissions and exacerbations and also due to the varying distribution pattern and the varying clinical types, e.g. reticul…
