Bacterial inactivation/sterilization by argon plasma treatment on contaminated titanium implant surfaces: in vitro study

2015

Background: Surface treatment by argon plasma is widely used as the last step of the manufacturing process of ti- tanium implant fixtures before their sterilization by gamma rays. The possibility of using such a technology in the daily clinical practice is particularly fascinating. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of the argon plasma treatment on different titanium implant surfaces previously exposed in vitro to bacterial contamination. Material and Methods: Sterile c.p. titanium implant discs with turned (T, Sa: 0.8μm), sandblasted/acid-etched (SAE, Sa: 1.3μm) and titanium plasma sprayed (TPS, Sa: 3.0μm) surface were used in this study. A strain of Ag- gregatibacter a…

Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin does not provide any additional benefit for tooth extraction in head and neck cancer patients post-radiotherapy :…

2020

Background One of the most important complications of radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) is osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaws, arising mainly from tooth extractions. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) in preventing ORN following tooth extraction in post-irradiated HNC patients, as well as other postoperative complications. Material and Methods 23 patients previously submitted to conventionally fractionated 3D-conformational RT for HNC underwent atraumatic tooth extractions with perioperative antibiotic therapy. Besides, they were randomly assigned to receive L-PRF clots to fill and cover the extraction socke…

A randomized clinical trial of topical dexamethasone vs. cyclosporine treatment for oral lichen planus

2021

BACKGROUND Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common, frequently symptomatic, immune-mediated disease. Various treatments have been used for symptomatic OLP, including corticosteroids and immunosuppressants administered topically or systemically. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of topical dexamethasone vs. topical cyclosporine in treatment of symptomatic OLP. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-two patients with biopsy-proven symptomatic OLP were randomly assigned to two therapeutic groups: dexamethasone 2mg/5ml or cyclosporine 100mg/ml, both administered topically in a swish and spit method three times a day for 4 weeks. The patients were followed up for a total of 6 months. Asse…

Multiple brown tumours of tertiary hyperparathyroidism in a renal transplant recipient: : a case report

2010

Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is an uncommon condition that affects patients with secondary HPT after a successful kidney transplant. Bone alterations are the main consequences of this endocrine condition, including the development of an osteolytic lesion called brown tumour. This paper reports an unusual case of multiple brown tumours located in the maxilla and mandible in a 58-year-old renal transplant recipient, with tertiary HPT. Incisional biopsies were performed and, in both samples, the histopathological diagnoses were giant cell lesions. Due to these diagnoses, the medical history of chronic renal failure, and high levels of serum calcium and PTH, lesions were diagnosed as mult…

Efficacy of botulinum toxin in the treatment of bruxism : systematic review

2019

Background Currently it has been shown that botulinum toxin is effective for a wide variety of medical conditions, and can be applied for therapeutic purposes as cosmetic. In recent years, there has been a growing trend in the use of this drug substance to control the muscular overactivity of bruxism. The objective of this study was the use of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) than traditional methods, by conducting a systematic review of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) published in the health sciences literature. Material and Methods An electronic search was made in the databases of the PubMed, Cochrane Library and Scopus data between March and October 2017, ECA, which will analyze the effe…

Intraoperatives Monitoring motorischer Hirnnerven bei Operationen an Hals und Schädelbasis

1994

Intraoperative monitoring of cranial nerves is performed to minimize postoperative cranial nerve dysfunction. We performed electrophysiological monitoring of motor cranial nerves with a NIM 2 unit from Xomed Treace and a patient multiplexer developed in our clinic. This multiplexer allows simultaneous monitoring of 4 cranial nerves and is additionally equipped with a bipolar stimulation mode. This intraoperative monitoring was employed during 102 skull base operations. Of these 102 operations, 44 were acoustic neuroma removals by translabyrinthine approach and 36 by a middle fossa approach. Various operations including removal of tumours of the jugular foramen and the infratemporal fossa we…

Oral complaints in patients with acute myeloid leukemia treated with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

2021

Background Acute myeloid leukemia belongs to proliferative diseases of the hematopoietic system. It is currently the leading indication for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. This study was designed to determine the most common subjective oral mucosa complaints in patients with acute myeloid leukemia after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation, in relation to the type of conditioning used. Material and Methods Eighty patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia were assigned to two groups depending on the intensity of the conditioning regimen before transplantation: myeloablative and reduced-intensity chemotherapy. The oral symptoms were evaluated based on an auth…

The use of topical corticosteroides in the treatment of oral lichen planus in Spain: A national survey

2017

Background Explore the treatment of oral lichen planus with topical corticosteroids by the healthcare professionals in Spain. Material and Methods A questionnaire targeted health professionals who treat OLP, in particular maxillofacial surgeons, dermatologist and dentist. The dissemination of the questionnaires was conducted through professional associations and dental and medical societies. The questionnaire was previously evaluated by means of a cognitive pre-test procedure to ensure that the questions were opportune and appropriate, understandable and acceptable among the professionals. Results Of the 890 questionnaires sent a total of 190 questionnaires were answered by 90 dentists, 60 …

Vergleich der perkutanen Dilatationstracheotomie versus konventioneller Tracheotomie - Eine retrospektive Studie

2003

BACKGROUND In this retrospective study we compared endoscopically controlled percutaneous dilatative tracheostomies (PDT) with conventional surgical tracheostomies as a bedside procedure and in the operating theatre. PATIENTS Between 1998 and 2000 we performed 360 tracheostomies electively, 152 in PDT-technique (42 %) and 208 (58 %) with the conventional procedure. Referring to the PDT-technique 74 % (n = 112) were performed at the bedside and 26 % in the operating theatre. The conventional tracheostomies took place at bedside in 53 % (n = 110) and in the operating theatre in 47 % (n = 98) of the cases. The complications were divided in 5 groups with special interest if the operation took p…
