Shifting notions of gendered care and neoliberal motherhood: From the lives of Latvian migrant women in Guernsey

2014

Synopsis In this article I analyse how socioeconomic constraints structure the geographical mobility of Latvian migrant women working on the island of Guernsey. A shifting notion of gendered care is revealed through a time-geographic investigation of distant emplacements of workplace and home, and through the neoliberal-informed evaluations by the mothers themselves. Their justifications emphasise the belief that care from a distance should be prioritised over physical proximity to those in need of care. With examples from interviews with mothers who have provided care during their movements between Latvia and Guernsey, I demonstrate how the outcomes of shifting notions of gendered care are…

Report on ICT in Education in Latvia

2020

Latvia is situated in the north-eastern part of Europe at the Baltic Sea. The Republic of Latvia boarders with Lithuania, Belorussia, Russia and Estonia. The name “Latvia” originates from the ancient Latgalians, one of four eastern Baltic tribes that formed the ethnic core of the Latvian people (ca. eighth–twelfth centuries A.D.).

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability of Different Building Structures in Latvian Climate

2015

Five experimental test buildings have been built in Riga, Latvia. They are identical except external walls for which different mainly regional building materials are used. Calculated U-values of the other walls, floor and ceiling are the same for each test building. Initial moisture influences the relative humidity of indoor air, which can be higher in the initial time period; as a result, heat transmittances are also very different and cause different heating/cooling energy consumption. Overheating risk in summer exists for test buildings with the smallest thermal inertia. Both summer and heating seasons have been analysed and differences between five test houses have been discussed in det…

Long-Term Ecological Research in Latvia

2005

The article describes the National Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Network of Latvia, which includes five study sites and eight research projects. It is supported by the Latvian Council of Sciences. The main directions of the research are impacts of climate warming and anthropogenic factors on terrestrial and freshwater communities and ecosystems. Characteristics of research sites are presented. The main results of the long-term investigations and their implementation in ecological management projects are described.

LKS-92 Coordinates Transformation to ITRF2000

2014

LKS-92 is Latvian geodetic coordinate system used as an EUREF89 realization in Latvia. LKS-92 is official coordinate system for procuring of essential geospatial data. For aeronautical and other purposes ITRF2000 is used in publication of geospatial data. Research is done to obtain transformation parameters from LKS-92 realization epoch 1992.75 through LatPos to ITRF2000 epoch 2000.00. Valuation of two different coordinate adjustment strategies and accuracy of parameters is done. Results of research could be used for transformation from LKS-92 to ITRF2000 for all kind of geospatial data.

2021

The paper analyses Latvian and German somatic idioms in the dictionaries by K. Ulmann and K. Ulmann / G. Braže. Up to now the researchers of Latvian phraseology have not focused to analyse these theme – especially in diachronic aspect. The paper presents the most fixed somatic idioms in the Latvian and German and their equivalence types. The author compares with the meanings of idioms from the first dictionary (1638) to modern electronic dictionary “Modern Latvian dictionary”. KEY WORDS: the dictionaries by K. Ulmann and K. Ulmann / G. Braže, somatic idioms, somatic components, the equivalence types of German–Latvian somatic idioms. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15181/rh.v19i0.1329
