The aim of this study is to show the advantages of the emerging multicommutation methodology based on the use of solenoid valves for Te determination in milk by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS). The delivery of a series of alternating sequential insertions of small volumes of samples and reagents gives rise to new hydrodynamic processes and exciting analytical potentials by controlling the time of flow through the on/off-switched solenoid valves. Arsenic content of Spanish cows' milk determined by dry ashing hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry.

SummaryThe arsenic content of cows' milk consumed in Spain was determined. A procedure using dry ashing hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry was developed for the purpose. Experimental conditions for the destruction of organic matter were established and an interference study was carried out. The method developed has a detection limit of 0·1 ng/g, a relative SD of 5%, and a recovery (mean ± CSI) of 100 ± 4%. The accuracy of the method was checked by analysis of a certified sample of IAEA milk powder (mean ± CSI: certified, 4·85 ± 0·32 ng/g; found, 5·04 ± 0·81 ng/g). The outer capsid proteins VP4 and VP7 induce neutralizing antibody against rotavirus. We have investigated in a mouse model the protection mediated by immunization with VP8*, the amino-terminal tryptic fragment of VP4. BALB/c female mice immunized with simian rotavirus SA11 VP6 and VP8* proteins expressed in Escherichia coli were mated with seronegative males. Litters were orally challenged with the SA11 strain (P5B[2], G3) or with the murine rotavirus strain EDIM (P10[16], G3) to verify the degree of protection against diarrhea induced in the newborns. The contribution of geographical certification programs to farm income and rural economies: The case of Pecorino Siciliano PDO

This study attempts to measure the capacity of the EU geographical certification scheme to positively influence the price of certified products and the incomes of their producers. A comparison of the economic results of two cheese-producing dairy farm enterprises with different business strategies and locations within the Sicilian hinterlands is performed in order to determine the transformation value of each dairy’s sheep milk into pecorino cheese (with and without the Protected Designation of Origin, or PDO, certification) and the related joint products (ricotta). Application of the Wood model to lactation curves of Comisana sheep

Abstract Ninety-two ewes of the Comisana breed were used in a study to verify the forecasting capacity of the mathematical model proposed by Wood for fitting sheep data, and to evaluate the effect of the environmental factors affecting the parameters of the lactation curve. The Wood model underestimated the total lactation milk production with an error margin of 12.2 ± 7.8 kg of milk corresponding to 10.9 ± 6.6%. There was a strong influence of order of lambing × lambing season interaction on the lactation parameters. Beta-casomorphins (b-CMs) are bioactive peptides derived from casein with opioid agonist effects similar to morphine. The use of electrospray (ESI) with quadrupole ion-trap mass spectrometry (QIT-MS) for these compounds in two matrices, cheese and milk, was examined. In Vitro Dialyzability of Zinc from Different Salts Used in the Supplementation of Infant Formulas

Seven zinc salts--acetate, chloride, lactate, sulfate, citrate, gluconate, and oxide--were added to milk--and soy-based infant formulas to estimate possible differences in zinc availability depending on the type of salt used. For this purpose, an in vitro method that estimates the dialyzability of the element (i.e., the fraction available for absorption) was applied. Zinc dialyzability is always higher in milk-based products than in soy products, even when the total zinc contents are higher in the latter. Biomonitoring of parabens in human milk and estimated daily intake for breastfed infants

In this study, we assessed the presence of four parabens in human milk of 120 mothers from Valencia (Spain) which took part in a human biomonitoring project (BETTERMILK). The detection frequency ranges of parabens were 41-60% and 61-89% for unconjugated- and total (unconjugated + conjugated)-parabens, respectively. The concentrations ranged from <LoQ to 31 ng/mL and from <LoQ to 49 ng/mL for unconjugated- and total-parabens, respectively. The frequency of use of some cosmetic products and human milk protein levels were the main predictors of parabens in milk. From 160 to 20 to 1 odorant: steps in a chemo-ethological strategy to identify a mammalian pheromone

This paper presents the strategy used to fractionate a complex odorant mixture into 20 candidate compounds, to finally single out a compound which activity explains the activity of the whole mixture. The joint chemical-behavioral approach will be outlined, and followed by a description of the experiments permitting to enter the isolated key-compound into the category of biologically-active compounds termed "pheromone".

Sheep habit during hand milking, and relations between the incorrect hand milking procedure and mammary health

This study aimed: (1) to evaluate the relation between the incorrect hand milking and mammary health; (2) to test the hypothesis of the ewe habit in the workstation, of their choice, during the milking. Teat moisturization with foam milk collected from the milk tank represents a high-risk factor because potentially contain mastitis-causing bacteria previously released from affected ewes. Moreover, it was found that sheep are routinary animals by habit during hand milking.
