Dynamic Range Processing’s Influence on Perceived Timing in Electronic Dance Music
2020
In this article, we explore the extent to which dynamic range processing (such as compression and sidechain compression) influences our perception of a sound signal’s temporal placement in music. Because compression reshapes the sound signal’s envelope, scholars have previously noted that certain uses of sidechain compression can produce peculiar rhythmic effects. In this article, we have tried to interrogate and complicate this notion by linking a description of the workings and effects of dynamic range processing to empirical findings on the interaction between sound and perceived timing, and by analyzing multitracks and DAW project files, as well as released audio files, of selected EDM …
Flerkanals multimedia over IP
2001

Development of a Virtual CH Path on WEB: Integration of a GIS, VR, and Other Multimedia Data
2021
Recent advances in computer science allowed people to explore new possibilities for the fruition of CH all around the world. The development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the field of territorial systems and the evolution of Virtual Reality (VR) solutions opened new scenarios for the valorization of cultural goods. At the same time, recent advances in digital photogrammetry and 3D interactive navigation models on WEB-based on WebGL technologies offered new opportunities of digital fruition of CH. Considering this panorama, the presented work shows how the integration of these technologies gives a precious added value to the virtual fruition of CH. In particular, it has been con…
The Affordances of Reading/Writing on Paper and Digitally in Finland
2014
The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of digital technologies on reading and writing in Finland. The perceived affordances of reading and writing on paper and digitally are compared by analysing written essays collected from 25 communication students in 2013. Research design is replicated from a study of Fortunati and Vincent that concerns Italian students. Results show that Finnish students perceive more positive than negative affordances regarding reading on paper, while reading on screen attracts fewer virtues. In this respect, results are in line with the Italian study. Unlike in Italy, students in Finland value writing on a keyboard especially because it enables editing th…
The value of a network in the digital era: insights about Doctor Chat case study
2017
Networks are ubiquitous in our lives in their social, physical, and digital forms. A growing number of firms today rely entirely on networking and lack a physical location or material infrastructure; they are, so to speak, 'liquid'. Through a theoretical analysis and its application to the case of Doctor Chat mobile app, this paper aims to analyse the fundamental laws of networks and to answer the following questions: 1) are the traditional methods to estimate the network value still valid in the current digital age and in particular for mobile applications?; 2) how do the laws of networks work when networks expand? We conclude with some suggestions for a research agenda in order to inspire…
Video Visualization of Predictors of Emotions Dynamically Expressed by Music
2013
Music is particularly appreciated for its capacity of evoking a large range of emotions. A growing area of research in music psychology and computer music endeavors to understand and model the role of the different constituents of music in its overall emotional impact. Whereas research so far has mainly focused on global musical and emotional descriptions, our project investigates more in detail the relationship between the dynamic evolution of musical content and the dynamic development of the resulting emotional reaction. We introduce a new method for predicting the dynamic appreciation of emotion based on audio and musical descriptions. We focus on one particular emotion: power. We propo…
Palermo: Virtual urban reconfiguration of some ancient squares and quarters
2013
The representation area is nowaday called upon to face new challenges for new computer technologies that have developed over the last few years. Visual communication and multimedia language experienced a radical change: representation and visualization, thought and image are based on the branch of communication and therefore on the trasmission of knowledge that cannot be separated from the interdisciplinarity. Digital imagery challenges more and more analog imagery, creating a scene that is independent from the constructed reality and sometimes reaching to overlap and merge with it: therefore the representation is no longer just a repetition of the real, but becomes itself an autonomous rea…
Cybertext Challenge
2007
This article discusses the changing role of literature in the contemporary media landscape. Literary scholarship may well maintain its importance in the digitalizing world, but this requires it to engage in an open dialogue with cultural and media studies. It is important that more attention is paid to contemporary literature as well as to new media offering significant pedagogical possibilities, which should be better acknowledged. The article's main focus is on the emerging field of digital literature. Cybertextuality, especially, is fundamentally changing our notions of the integrity of a literary work, reading, writing and interpretation. I attempt to describe and put into context one …
