Quantum gravity with torsion and non-metricity

2015

We study the renormalization of theories of gravity with an arbitrary (torsionful and non-metric) connection. The class of actions we consider is of the Palatini type, including the most general terms with up to two derivatives of the metric, but no derivatives of the connection. It contains 19 independent parameters. We calculate the one loop beta functions of these parameters and find their fixed points. The Holst subspace is discussed in some detail and found not to be stable under renormalization. Some possible implications for ultraviolet and infrared gravity are discussed.

A thermodynamic approach to the T-models

2021

The perfect fluid solutions admitting a group G$_3$ of isometries acting on orbits S$_2$ whose curvature has a gradient which is tangent to the fluid flow (T-models) are studied from a thermodynamic approach. All the admissible thermodynamic schemes are obtained, and the solutions compatible with the generic ideal gas equation of state are studied in detail. The possible physical interpretation of some previously known T-models is also analyzed.

(2+1)-dimensional Einstein-Kepler problem in the centre-of-mass frame

1999

We formulate and analyze the Hamiltonian dynamics of a pair of massive spinless point particles in (2+1)-dimensional Einstein gravity by anchoring the system to a conical infinity, isometric to the infinity generated by a single massive but possibly spinning particle. The reduced phase space \Gamma_{red} has dimension four and topology R^3 x S^1. \Gamma_{red} is analogous to the phase space of a Newtonian two-body system in the centre-of-mass frame, and we find on \Gamma_{red} a canonical chart that makes this analogue explicit and reduces to the Newtonian chart in the appropriate limit. Prospects for quantization are commented on.

Return to Equilibrium, Non-self-adjointness and Symmetries, Recent Results with M. Hitrik and F. Hérau

2014

In this talk we review some old and new results about the use of supersymmetric structures in semi-classical problems. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for a real semiclassical partial differential operator of order two to possess a supersymmetric structure. For operators coming from a chain of oscillators, coupled to two heat baths, we show the non-existence of a smooth supersymmetric structure. The recent and new results all come from joint works with Michael Hitrik and Frederic Herau.

Thermal solitons along wires with flux-limited lateral exchange

2021

We obtain some exact solutions in the context of solitons, for heat conduction with inertia along a cylinder whose heat exchange with the environment is a non-linear function of the difference of temperatures of the cylinder and the environment, due to a flux-limiter behavior of the exchange. We study the consequences of heat transfer and information transfer along the wire, and we compare the situation with analogous solitons found in nonlinear lateral radiative exchange studied in some previous papers. We also find further exact solutions in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions for the sake of completeness.

Classical thermodynamics of the Heisenberg chain in a field by generalized Bethe ansatz method

1990

Abstract Using the classical action-angle variables for the continuous model, we study the thermodynamics of the classical Heisenberg chain in an applied field by a generalized Bethe ansatz approach. The crucial point consists in the derivation of a phase-shifted density of states for the excitations of the model, obtained by imposing periodic boundary conditions. In the thermodynamic limit, the free energy can be expressed in terms of the solution of a non-linear integral equation, showing the universal dependece of the variable x=(JH) 1 2 /T .

Optimized Hermite-Gaussian ansatz functions for dispersion-managed solitons

2001

Abstract By theoretical analysis, we show that the usual procedure of simply projecting the dispersion-managed (DM) soliton profile onto the basis of an arbitrary number of Hermite-gaussian (HG) polynomials leads to relatively accurate ansatz functions, but does not correspond to the best representation of DM solitons. Based on the minimization of the soliton dressing, we present a simple procedure, which provides highly accurate representation of DM solitons on the basis of a few HG polynomials only.

Bose-Fermi equivalence and interacting string field theory

1995

Abstract We show that the bosonic and the fermionic realization of the ghost vertex in the Half-String (HS) Operator approach to Witten's String Field Theory (WSFT) are equivalent. In the process we discover that higher vertices (i.e., N > 3) can be eliminated in WSFT using only the overlap conditions defining the interaction vertex and ghost number counting.

Anomalous dynamics triggered by a non-convex equation of state in relativistic flows

2017

The non-monotonicity of the local speed of sound in dense matter at baryon number densities much higher than the nuclear saturation density ($n_0 \approx 0.16\,$fm$^{-3}$) suggests the possible existence of a non-convex thermodynamics which will lead to a non-convex dynamics. Here, we explore the rich and complex dynamics that an equation of state (EoS) with non-convex regions in the pressure-density plane may develop as a result of genuinely relativistic effects, without a classical counterpart. To this end, we have introduced a phenomenological EoS, whose parameters can be restricted heeding to causality and thermodynamic stability constraints. This EoS shall be regarded as a toy-model wi…

Wormholes supported by hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

2012

Recently, a modified theory of gravity was presented, which consists of the superposition of the metric Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian with an $f(\cal R)$ term constructed \`{a} la Palatini. The theory possesses extremely interesting features such as predicting the existence of a long-range scalar field, that explains the late-time cosmic acceleration and passes the local tests, even in the presence of a light scalar field. In this brief report, we consider the possibility that wormholes are supported by this hybrid metric-Palatini gravitational theory. We present here the general conditions for wormhole solutions according to the null energy conditions at the throat and find specific examples…
