Unitarity of Minkowski nonlocal theories made explicit

2021

In this work we explicitly show that the perturbative unitarity of analytic infinite derivative (AID) scalar field theories can be achieved using a modified prescription for computing scattering amplitudes. The crux of the new prescription is the analytic continuation of a result obtained in the Euclidean signature to the Minkowski external momenta. We intensively elaborate an example of a non-local $\phi^4$ model for various infinite derivative operators. General UV properties of amplitudes in non-local theories are discussed.

Gauge invariance and unstable particles.

1995

A gauge-independent approach to resonant transition amplitudes with nonconserved external currents is presented, which is implemented by the pinch technique. The analytic expressions derived with this method are $U(1)_{em}$ invariant, independent of the choice of the gauge-fixing parameter, and satisfy a number of required theoretical properties, including unitarity. Although special attention is paid to resonant scatterings involving the $\gamma WW$ and $ZWW$ vertices in the minimal Standard Model, our approach can be extended to the top quark or other unstable particles appearing in renormalizable models of new physics.

A scenario for critical scalar field collapse in $AdS_3$

2014

We present a family of exact solutions, depending on two parameters $\alpha$ and $b$ (related to the scalar field strength), to the three-dimensional Einstein-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant $\Lambda$. For $b=0$ these solutions reduce to the static BTZ family of vacuum solutions, with mass $M = -\alpha$. For $b\neq0$, the solutions become dynamical and develop a strong spacelike central singularity. The $\alpha0$ agrees qualitatively with that observed in numerical simulations of subcritical collapse. We analyze the linear perturbations of the threshold solution, $\alpha=0$, in the $\Lambda=0$ approximation, and find that it has only one unstable growing mode, whi…

Testing Hawking particle creation by black holes through correlation measurements

2010

Hawking's prediction of thermal radiation by black holes has been shown by Unruh to be expected also in condensed matter systems. We show here that in a black hole-like configuration realized in a BEC this particle-creation does indeed take place and can be unambiguously identified via a characteristic pattern in the density-density correlations. This opens the concrete possibility of the experimental verification of this effect.

Superfield commutators for D = 4 chiral multiplets and their apppications

1987

The superfield commutators and their corresponding equal-time limits are derived in a covariant way for the D=4 free massive chiral multiplet. For interesting chiral multiplets, the general KAllen-Lehmann representation is also introduced. As applications of the free superfield commutators, the general solution of the Cauchy problem for chiral superfields is given, and an analysis of the closure of the bilinear products of superfields which desrcibe the extension of the internal currents for free supersymmetric chiral matter is performed.

Numerical studies of Minimally Doubled Fermions

2013

We have performed the first numerical study of minimally doubled fermions of the Karsten-Wilczek class in the quenched approximation. This requires fixing the counterterms, which arise due to hypercubic symmetry breaking induced by the Karsten-Wilczek term. Non-perturbative renormalisation criteria are formulated after a detailed study of the parameter dependence of mesonic observables. Minimisation of the mass anisotropy of the pseudoscalar ground state fixes non-perturbative renormalisation conditions for the counterterm coefficients. These anisotropies are mapped out by probing different euclidean components of the transfer matrix through calculations of the pseudoscalar ground state mas…

Kaluza-Klein origin for the superstring tension

1992

The natural configuration space of a string in a background antisymmetric tensor potential is not loop space, but a principal U(1) bundle over loop space. This allows a Kaluza-Klein--like interpretation of the string tension as momentum along the U(1) fiber, and a similar interpretation is possible for a {ital p}-dimensional object. The higher-dimensional'' action incorporating this momentum as a dynamical variable is given for a {ital p}-dimensional supersymmetric extended object, in a general supergravity background. Its relevance, for a flat background, to classical anomalies'' in the supersymmetry algebra is explained.

Abelian charges in a nonabelian Yang-Mills theory from the stratification of the space of gauge potentials

1992

Abstract The Abelian charges in a non-Abelian Yang-Mills-Dirac theory arising from the reduction of the structure group are studied. They are defined by the concept of the stabilizer gauge transformations. Their properties are investigated. The relationship between the whole class of stabilizers and the stratification of the space of gauge potentials is given. The effect of the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism on these charges is discussed.

Remarks on the reduced phase space of -dimensional gravity on a torus in the Ashtekar formulation

1998

We examine the reduced phase space of the Barbero-Varadarajan solutions of the Ashtekar formulation of (2 + 1)-dimensional general relativity on a torus. We show that it is a finite-dimensional space due to the existence of an infinite-dimensional residual gauge invariance which reduces the infinite-dimensional space of solutions to a finite-dimensional space of gauge-inequivalent solutions. This is in agreement with general arguments which imply that the number of physical degrees of freedom for (2 + 1)-dimensional Ashtekar gravity on a torus is finite.

Phase space coordinates and the Hamiltonian constraint of Regge calculus.

1994

We suggest that the phase space of Regge calculus is spanned by the areas and the deficit angles corresponding to the two-simplexes on the spacelike hypersurface of simplicial spacetime. Our proposal is based on a slight modification of the Ashtekar formulation of canonical gravity. In terms of these phase space coordinates we write an equation which we suggest to be a simplicial version of the Hamiltonian constraint of canonical gravity.
