2015
The main aim of this paper is to consider from different points of view the thesis of a conservative character of Peirce’s thought. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, arguments for Peirce’s conservatism are presented. They are of two kinds: inner ones (Peirce’s own declarations) and outer ones (a comparison of Peirce’s view o the views of two other classical pragmatists: James and Dewey). The second part of the paper is devoted to counterarguments – the main one is the fact that Peirce is an author of the conception of an unlimited community of inquirers. This conception was an inspiration to the vision of the world and social activities which were perceived as unambiguousl…
Maineen ja tunnettuuden merkitys yhteishyvään pyrkivän organisaation legitimiteetin muodostumisessa
2010
Kolmannen sektorin merkitys yhteiskunnassa on vahvistunut.
Variation and variability in L2 learning trajectories : Learning the Finnish existential construction
2022
Taking an onomasiological approach and a dynamic usage-based perspective, this study explores how four beginning L2 learners of Finnish develop in expressing existentiality (‘there is something somewhere’) before and after instruction. Data were collected weekly over a period of nine months and examined for conventionalized and non-conventionalized constructions that express existentiality. As expected from a dynamic usage-based perspective, both inter-individual variation and intra-individual variability were identified. The initial repertoires of two of the learners were quite variable, as they used several different non-conventionalized constructions before settling on more conventionali…

Imperial straightening devices in disciplinary choices of academic knowledge production
2021
Abstract In this piece, the authors question whether critical language research, in its complex collection of researcher choices, is possible beyond the discursive imaginary of critical academic scholarship. In other words, how do (allegedly) anticolonial efforts re-orient towards contribution to the imperial record? We present three vignettes, through which we grapple with the notion that researcher choice exists within the solipsism of academia. In doing so, we frame research and scholarship as a collection of choices, which we believe are better understood as a collection of fraught dilemmas. These dilemmas recognize that all academic scholarship production and its processes are birthed …
UAV-Assisted Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Comprehensive Survey
2021
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are usually deployed to different areas of interest to sense phenomena, process sensed data, and take actions accordingly. The networks are integrated with many advanced technologies to be able to fulfill their tasks that is becoming more and more complicated. These networks tend to connect to multimedia networks and to process huge data over long distances. Due to the limited resources of static sensor nodes, WSNs need to cooperate with mobile robots such as unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in their developments. The mobile devices show their maneuverability, computational and energy-storage abilities to support WSNs in mul…
Encryption and Generation of Images for Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning in Smart Manufacturing
2023
Current advances in machine (deep) learning and the exponential growth of data collected by and shared between smart manufacturing processes give a unique opportunity to get extra value from that data. The use of public machine learning services actualizes the issue of data privacy. Ordinary encryption protects the data but could make it useless for the machine learning objectives. Therefore, “privacy of data vs. value from data” is the major dilemma within the privacy preserving machine learning activity. Special encryption techniques or synthetic data generation are being in focus to address the issue. In this paper, we discuss a complex hybrid protection algorithm, which assumes sequenti…
The nasus gland: A new gland in soldiers of Angularitermes (Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae)
2015
Termites have developed many exocrine glands, generally dedicated to defence or communication. Although a few of these glands occur in all termite species, or represent synapomorphies of larger clades, others are morphological innovations of a single species, or a few related species. Here, we describe the nasus gland, a new gland occurring at the base of the nasus of Angularitermes soldiers. The nasus gland is composed of class 1, 2, and 3 secretory cells, a rare combination that is only shared by the sternal and tergal glands of some termites and cockroaches. The ultrastructural observations suggest that the secretion is produced by class 2 and 3 secretory cells, and released mostly by cl…
Negotiating CSO Legitimacy in Tanzanian Civic Space
2023
AbstractThis chapter argues that civil society organizations (CSOs) engage in continuous legitimacy negotiations that both shape and are shaped by civic space. It focuses on President John Magufuli’s term in Tanzania, which was labelled as an authoritarian turn characterized by shrinking civic space. The chapter employs broad definitions: of civic space as an arena for action by formal CSOs as well as groups and individuals; of legitimacy as a continuous negotiation of appropriateness; and of democracy as a dynamic form of governance with different manifestations. Drawing on interviews with both professional urban NGOs and rural self-help groups, the chapter investigates restrictions experi…
