Between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth, the changes in the military technology - mainly related to the spread of firearms - implied a re-elaboration of the fortification construction theories and, consequently, a practical experimentation aimed at the identification of architectural models capable to make the border areas safe and impregnable. Since the end of the nineteenth century, the attention of Italian historiography to the Spanish monarchy in the modern age has been a constant in political, social and economic studies. In recent decades Italian historiography has been enriched by new research that has allowed us to understand the functioning of the Spanish Monarchy in the Modern Age.In particular, studies carried out on political actors who built their careers in the Mediterranean and Atlantic areas have highlighted how we can reconstruct a connected history that, starting from the individual experiences, gives due attention to both the circulation of knowledge and the relations at the local level.

Resum: En aquest article realitzarem una anàlisi quantitativa, semàntica i comparativa dels conceptes ‘Espanya’ i ‘Catalunya’ en les seves formes terminològiques singulars i plurals pròpies dels idiomes català, castellà i llatí, contingudes en els dietaris institucionals del Consell de Cent de Barcelona i de la Diputació del General de Catalunya. Resum: L’expulsió de la Companyia de Jesús, decretada per Carles III el 1767, obrí un llarg període de foscor per als jesuïtes hispànics. Tanmateix, el cop de gràcia a l’orde vindria de la mà del papa Climent XIV, que, pressionat per la monarquia espanyola –l’ambaixador del rei hispànic a Roma Moñino recorregué a la coacció i al suborn d’afins al pontífex–, declarà extingida la Companyia el 21 de juliol del 1773. La Universitat de Cervera : Un projecte reformista frustrat

Resum: La universitat de Cervera, fundada per Felip V, suposà una fita important per a Catalunya: per un costat, naixia com un projecte borbònic de futur i, per un altre, significava que les universitats catalanes històriques havien estat abolides, en virtut de la política repressora del nou monarca. El present article analitza aquella institució i el fracàs d’aquell projecte. La creació de la Universitat ha de situar-se en un context reformista de tall centralista, propi de les noves monarquies europees que van prendre com a imatge la cort i l’acció en política interna de Lluís XIV. Much ado about nothing? The intendant, the gentilshommes and the investigations into nobility in Burgundy (1664-1670)

In 1664 Louis XIV did not spare the Burgundian nobles where furnishing proof of their entitlement to nobility was concerned. His quest for usurpers, which occurred throughout the French kingdom, generated severe misgivings among the gentilshommes, those nobles who had the right to sit in the provincial estates and feared that members of their Chambre would suffer pointless harassment. However, the process was conducted in an unexpectedly lenient manner, demonstrating that royal authority—through its local representative, the intendant Claude Bouchu—could be employed in a conciliatory fashion.
