Staphylococcus epidermidis ir komensāls oportūnists, kas ir plaši sastopams kā daļa no ādas normālās mikrofloras. Bieži tas kā kontaminants nokļūst uz protēžu vai katetru virsmas un veicina noturīgu infekciju attīstību. Pateicoties S. epidermids biofilmu veidojošai īpašībai 80% grūti ārstējamu infekciju gadījumos novērojama to klātbūtne. Meticilīna rezistence ir plaši izplatīta pateicoties mecA gēna klātbūtnei. tst1-positive ST22-MRSA-IVa in healthy Italian preschool children

A survey was performed in May 2013 to assess methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal colonization in healthy children attending 26 municipal daycare centres in Palermo, Italy. Of the 500 children, ten (2 %) tested positive. Eight MRSA isolates were tst1-positive ST22-MRSA-IVa, spa t223; the other two isolates were identified as ST1-IVa and ST398-V, respectively. tst1-positive ST22-MRSA, spa t223 has been previously identified only in the Middle Eastern area.

Aim: To evaluate nasal carriage rate and variables associated with Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in patients admitted in two healthcare facilities. Results: S. aureus was isolated from 159 (26%) of the enrolled patients. Methicillin-susceptible S. aureus was isolated from 150 (24.5%) patients, and MRSA was isolated from 9 (1.5%). A modified pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) protocol was developed and applied to clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and enterococci to reduce the cost of using lysostaphin. This protocol reduces the expenses of PFGE typing of S. aureus and enterococci as it removes the use of lysostaphin during the spheroplast formation from these bacteria.
