Peer review is often criticized for being flawed, subjective and biased, but research into peer review has been hindered by a lack of access to peer review reports. Here we report the results of a study in which text-analysis software was used to determine the linguistic characteristics of 472,449 peer review reports. A range of characteristics (including analytical tone, authenticity, clout, three measures of sentiment, and morality) were studied as a function of reviewer recommendation, area of research, type of peer review and reviewer gender. We found that reviewer recommendation had the biggest impact on the linguistic characteristics of reports, and that area of research, type of peer…

Glasgow ou l’Écosse urbaine dans les poèmes de Hugh MacDiarmid

2012

Hugh MacDiarmid is sometimes still thought a parochial poet, mostly interested in the depiction of rural Scotland. However, in the 1930s, he wrote several poems about the city of Glasgow but his work on urban predicaments has been largely forgotten. In his Glasgow sequence, MacDiarmid, along with many other writers in the 30s, redefines Scotland as an urban nation. Post-industrial Glasgow urges the whole country to ‘re-write’ itself and the canonical representation of rural Scotland to fade away. Scotland is mercilessly deconstructed in Glasgow 1938: Glasgow is no longer ‘a dear green place’, Scotland no longer a land of peasants but urban hell where filthy disease and dirty capitalism spre…

Darbā aplūkots periods no 06.04.2016. līdz 29.04.2016, izmantojot augstas frekvences (stundas intervāla) datus par 36 “The Standard & Poor’s 500” indeksā iekļauto uzņēmumu akcijām. Sociālo mediju sentimenta aprēķināšanai ir izmantota vārdnīcu pieeja - konkrēti, R programmēšanas valodas bibliotēka “sentimentr”. Izmantojot vektoru autoregresijas (VAR) modeļus, iegūti statistiski nozīmīgi rezultāti, kas apliecina investora sentimenta ietekmi gan uz akciju ienesīgumu, gan uz tirdzniecības apjomu. Abos gadījumos ti…

Sequence of lethal events in HeLa cells exposed to the G2 blocking cytolethal distending toxin

2000

The bacterial cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) was previously shown to block the cell cycle of several cell lines at stage G2 through inactivation of the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdkl and without induction of DNA strand breaks. In the present study, we have analyzed, using various methods of analytical cytometry, the progressive transformation and delayed lethal events in the tumor-derived HeLa cell line temporarily exposed to CDT. The cell proliferation arrest induced by CDT was irreversible but, starting about two days after exposure, the G2 block released partially, concomitantly with a decline in the level of Cdkl phosphorylation. This partial release resulted in endoreduplication, lead…

Political candidates in infotainment programmes and their emotional effects on Twitter: an analysis of the 2015 Spanish general elections pre-campaig…

2017

[EN] The infotainment format offers candidates an informal setting to show a more personal side of themselves to the electorate, opening themselves up to potential voters. An example of media hybridisation, social networks users can immediately comment on infotainment television programmes, a process known as second screening. These second screeners tend to be especially active in politics. This paper analyses the immediate emotional reaction of these users as they watch infotainment programmes that air during the campaign or pre-campaign seasons and feature political candidates as guests. We have confirmed that second screeners react more emotionally towards the candidate when his or her p…

The lai “Si bé, Fortuna, has dat lo torn”: a critical edition of the catalan poem from the novel Triste deleitación

2019

The Castilian novel Triste deleitación, written in the late fifteenth century by an author from the Crown of Aragon, includes several letters and poems. One of these poems, “Sy bé, Fortuna, as dat lo torn”, is written in Catalan. This article presents the poem’s annotated critical edition, which reports how it is indebted to the Catalan lyrical tradition. Written in an evolved form of the French lai cultivated by various Catalan poets, the poem is clearly influenced by Pere Torroella’s lai “Qui volrà veure un pobre estat”, and linked to two other similar lais also dependent on Torroella’s. This edition is completed by a translation into modern Catalan. La novel·la en castellà Triste deleita…

Anverso y reverso de la nación: el discurso de la antiespañolada durante los primeros años 40

2015

During the immediate postwar years, different voices from the new francoist regime produced a discourse relatively spontaneous but, at the same time, recognizable enough addressed to denounce what they considered as an unacceptable deformation of the Spanishness. Basically, and in spite of the ideological differences amongst its producers, the critic raised from a common and painful nationalism which pointed at the foreign look —specially, the French romantic look— as creator and supporter of what they called España de pandereta. This look supposed a distortion and mystification of Spain as a picturesque nation that resulted in the españolada. The aim of this article is to explore this disc…
