Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Nitrogen Fertilizer Recovery of Durum Wheat Genotypes as Affected by Interspecific Competition

2010

A better understanding of the genotype response to N fertilization under weed competition is necessary to identify varieties that exhibit high N use effi ciency even when weeds compete for available N. Such varieties may be more suitable for low input or organic systems. Th is study assessed the variations in nitrogen use effi ciency (NUE) (and its components) and the recovery of 15 N-labeled fertilizer in three durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) genotypes (one landrace and two varieties that diff er in terms of plant growth, grain yield potential, and adaptability to stressful environments) grown in the presence or absence of interspecifi c competition and varying soil N availability (0 or…

Breeding system and pollination of Nuphar luteum (L.) Smith (Nymphaeaceae) in Norway

1995

Summary Insects visiting Nuphar luteum in southern Norway were caught and identified and their role as pollinators was evaluated by observations of their behaviour. Nuphar luteum is mainly pollinated by Apis mellifera and Bombus spp. Moreover syrphid flies are efficient pollinators. The chrysomelid beetle Donacia crassipes , although sometimes present, plays but a minor role as pollinator. By bagging and emasculating flowers the breeding system was shown to be one of mixed mating. Nuphar luteum is protogynous and primarily cross-pollinated, but because male and female stages overlap during the second day of flowering, and because it is self-compatible, self-fertilization is possible. When are vomiting males attractive? Sexual selection on condition-dependent nuptial feeding in Drosophila subobscura

2009

Nuptial gifts are any nutritious items or inedible tokens transferred from the male to the female as a part of courtship or copulation. Although nuptial gift donation has been studied in a variety of taxa, this behavior has been largely overlooked in Drosophila. We studied nuptial feeding in Drosophila subobscura, where the gift is a regurgitated drop of liquid, in order to examine the importance of this behavior for male mating success and female fecundity. We varied male and female condition by dietary restriction to assess any condition dependence of male nuptial feeding ability and female feeding behavior and mate discrimination. Our results show that there was directional selection for…

A higher incidence of moult–breeding overlap in great tits across time is linked to an increased frequency of second clutches: a possible effect of g…

2021

The rise of temperatures due to global warming is related to a lengthening of the breeding season in many bird species. This allows more pairs to attempt two clutches within the breeding season, thus finishing their breeding activity later in the season and therefore potentially overlapping these with post–breeding moult. We tested whether this occurred in two Spanish great tit Parus major populations. The proportion of pairs laying second clutches increased from 1 % to 32 % over the study period in one of the populations (Sagunto, 1995–2019), while it did not change in the other (Quintos, 2006–2019; mean 5 %). We did not find any temporal trend for moult start date of late–breeding birds i…

Egg and larval load assessment and its influence on oviposition behaviour of the leaf beetle Galerucella nymphaeae

1993

The oviposition behaviour of the water-lily beetle Galerucella nymphaeae was examined. This species is a specialist herbivore on the floating leaves of nymphaeids Nymphaeaceae and especially on the yellow water-lily, Nuphar lutea. Females lay their eggs in clutches on the leaves, and after hatching, the larvae feed on the leaves. The quality of the leaves decreases quickly after the larvae hatch, and eventually the leaves will sink below the water surface, whereupon the eggs, 1st-instar larvae and pupae are killed by drowning. The influence of conspecific eggs, larvae and feeding tracks on the oviposition preferences of the beetles was tested. Females were allowed to choose between fresh le…

Stereoselective Synthesis of Enantiomerically Pure Nupharamine Alkaloids from Castoreum

2009

An animalic note: The first total synthesis of the all-cis nupharamine 2, an alkaloid from beaver castoreum, is based on the stereoselective domino Mannich-Michael reaction of N-galactosylfurylaldimine to give 1 (Piv = pivaloyl), subsequent conjugate cuprate addition, and stereoselective protonation of the enolate. These reactions are all controlled by the carbohydrate. Protonation of the enolate after cleavage of the auxiliary leads to epimer 3.

Le Ninfe nell’arte di Siracusa

2015
