Response to Cardiovascular Autonomic Dysfunction as a Link Between Insulin Resistance and Nocturnal Blood Pressure Elevation

2008

We welcome the interest that Perciaccante1 has shown in our research on the impact of obesity and insulin resistance in nocturnal blood pressure elevation in children and adolescents.2 We agree with his hypothesis that abnormal cardiovascular autonomic function is a potential link between insulin resistance …

THE BIA VECTOR IN OBESITY AND DIABETES

2013

Although the assessment of body water compartments is of great diagnostic value, appropriate methods are not readily available for routinely clinical application. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a safe, noninvasive, rapid and highly reproducible procedure that is strongly influenced by body water and intra-/extracellular distribution. Four-hundred-fifty-six adults (224 males and 232 females) were enrolled and divided in subgroups on the basis of the presence of obesity and diabetes (type 1 and type 2). The aim of the study was to investigate if different BIA measurements in terms of resistance (R), reactance (Xc) and phase angle (PA) were associated to these conditions. Plotting t…

Correlation between BMI and the pathological features of prostate cancer at biopsy

2013

Introduction/Aim: Numerous clinical trials investigated the association between obesity and prostate cancer, but they yielded inconsistent results (1). Obesity has been found to be related to prostatic tumors at more advanced stages and higher Gleason grade when compared with normal population (2). An increased number of biopsy cores has been advocated by some Authors in obese and overweight men due to an increased difficulty and delay in cancer detection (3). The main aim of our research was to correlate Body Mass Index (BMI) with the pathological characteristics of prostate cancer at biopsy. Patients and Methods: Patients with positive prostate biopsy performed for palpable prostate nodul…

Obesity and Outcomes in COVID-19: When an Epidemic and Pandemic Collide.

2020

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and in much of the westernized world, contributing to considerable morbidity. Several of these obesity-related morbidities are associated with greater risk for death with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 penetrates human cells through direct binding with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors on the cell surface. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 expression in adipose tissue is higher than that in lung tissue, which means that adipose tissue may be vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. Obese patients also have worse outcomes with COVID-19 infection, including respiratory failure, n…

Body Mass index, family lifestyle, physical activity and eating behaviour on a sample of primary school students in a small town of western Sicily.

2012

Background: Obesity is actually a discernible issue in prosperous western society and is dramatically increasing in children and adolescents. Many studies indicate that obesity in childhood may become chronic disease in adulthood and, particularly, those who are severely overweight have an increased risk of death by cardiovascular disease. Understanding the determinants of life style and behavior in a person’s youth and making attempts to change children’s habits is considered a key strategy in the primary prevention of obesity. This study aims to find a correlation between Body Mass Index, (BMI), physical activity and eating behavior and to identify, e…

The effect of body mass index on chest trauma severity and prognosis.

2017

Patients with thoracic trauma constitute one third of all the trauma cases, in west Sicily were recorded 941 thoracic trauma during the period between 2006 and 2009. Sicily is one of the Italian regions with the highest rate of obesity: some studies have demonstrated that obesity is an independent risk factor for mortality in high energy blunt traumas. This study was conducted with trauma patients older than 20 years old who presented to our Department during the last five years. We only included thoracic injuries and politrauma with a thoracic involvement and a BMI25. Patients were divided into two groups: HET and LET patients.Thoracic trauma was more common in patients with a BMI25 than in…

Body mass index and factors associated with overweight and obesity: a crosssectional in a small city of Western Sicily (Italy)

2012

Background: although the epidemiological features of overweight and obesity have been well described, especially for very populous urban areas, less evidences are available for small urban areas. The aim of the present work was to assess BMI and factors associated with overweight and obesity in a representative sample of general population of a small city of Western Sicily (Italy).

Methods: four hundred and eleven randomly selected adult subjects from general population living in a small Sicilian city with 7 144 inhabitants were interviewed by a standardized questionnaire investigating life-styles, eating h…

Perception of Well-Being and Quality of Life in Obese Patients After Bariatric Surgery

2022

Bariatric surgery is the treatment of choice for effective weight reduction in patients with morbid obesity. The influence of the surgery, mostly consisting of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, on mental health is less clear. This study aims to define the influence of bariatric surgery on the perception of well-being and the general quality of life in obese patients. This is a study in which 52 obese patients, 90% of whom are women, were surveyed for the long-term persistence of weight reduction, physical activity, mood, perception of self-confidence, self-worth, and other psycho-socio-emotional factors relating to the general quality of life before and after bariatric surgery. We confirmed …

Isolated Systolic Hypertension in the Young

2019

Elevated systolic blood pressure with normal diastolic blood pressure is the most prevalent type of hypertension in young people. The prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension reported among youth ranges widely as a result of the differences in population characteristics such as age, ethnicity, and obesity. Even though it is not an unusual condition, there is still debate in the literature about the clinical significance of an isolated increase in systolic blood pressure detected in the first decades of life. The reported phenotypic characteristics of subjects with isolated systolic hypertension are rather scarce and many relevant pieces of information are still elusive. Further studies …

Incretins, Pregnancy, and Gestational Diabetes

2015

The number of pregnant women affected by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing among Caucasians, and East Asians. GDM also increases the risk for later advent of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, and cardiovascular disease in both women and their offspring. The underlying mechanism of GDM is not fully elucidated. Incretins such as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP), have been suggested to have a role in maternal metabolism and weight as well as fetal growth. These hormones might be implicated in mechanisms that compensate for the increment in glycemia and insulin resistance seen during pregnancy, while other factors, such a…
