Technical Note on the quality of DNA sequencing for the molecular characterisation of genetically modified plants

Abstract As part of the risk assessment (RA) requirements for genetically modified (GM) plants, according to Regulation (EU) No 503/2013 and the EFSA guidance on the RA of food and feed from GM plants (EFSA GMO Panel, 2011), applicants need to perform a molecular characterisation of the DNA sequences inserted in the GM plant genome. The European Commission has mandated EFSA to develop a technical note to the applicants on, and checking of, the quality of the methodology, analysis and reporting covering complete sequencing of the insert and flanking regions, insertion site analysis of the GM event, and generational stability and integrity. The aim of this study was to apply the enzymatic treatment and fermentation by Pediococcus acidilactici BaltBio01 strain for industrial cereal by-products conversion to food/feed bioproducts with high amount of probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB). High‐power ultrasound altered the polyphenolic content and antioxidant capacity in cloudy apple juice during storage

The aim was to investigate the influence of high‐power ultrasound treatment (HPU) on polyphenolic stability and antioxidant capacity in cloudy apple juice during 7 days of storage at 4°C. HPU (100 W, 30 kHz frequency) was operated at: (i) amplitude 40 versus 80%, (ii) the probe diameter 7 versus 10 mm, and (iii) treatment time of 3, 6, and 9 min. Total phenols (TP), total flavan‐3‐ols (TFL), and in vitro antioxidant capacity (DPPH and FRAP) were determined spectrophotometrically. Anti-Inflammatory and Cytoprotective Effect of Plant Sterol and Galactooligosaccharides-Enriched Beverages in Caco-2 Cells

Plant sterol (PS) (1 g/100 mL) enriched milk-based fruit beverages with or without galactooligosaccharides (GOS) (1.8 g/100 mL) were used in differentiated Caco-2 cells. Their potential cytopreventive effect against oxidative stress induced by cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) and their anti-inflammatory properties were evaluated. Preincubation (24 h) with bioaccessible fractions from beverages without and with GOS (MfB and MfB-G) completely prevented the COPs (60 μM/4 h) induced oxidative stress independent to GOS presence with exception to calcium influx and GSH content, where a partial protective effect was observed. A one step enhanced extraction and encapsulation system of cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) polyphenols and iridoids with β-cyclodextrin

Abstract The objective of this study was simultaneous extraction and encapsulation of cornelian cherry active principles. As an encapsulating agent, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was used to enhance the ultrasound-assisted extraction of cornelian cherry polyphenols and iridoids. Lyophilized cornelian cherry fruit was extracted by four different solvents: pure water, 50% aqueous ethanol (conventional system), 1.5% β-CD water solution and 1.5% β-CD aqueous ethanol solution. To Swim or Not to Swim: Potential Transmission of Balaenophilus manatorum (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) in Marine Turtles

Species of Balaenophilus are the only harpacticoid copepods that exhibit a widespread, obligate association with vertebrates, i.e., B. unisetus with whales and B. manatorum with marine turtles and manatees. In the western Mediterranean, juveniles of the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta are the only available hosts for B. manatorum, which has been found occurring at high prevalence (>80%) on them. A key question is how these epibionts are transmitted from host to host. We investigated this issue based on experiments with live specimens of B. manatorum that were cultured with turtle skin. Metabolite specific effects of solar UV-A and UV-B on alder and birch leaf phenolics

We measured the concentrations of ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing phenolics varying in response to exclusion of either solar UV-B or both solar UV-A and UV-B radiations in leaves of grey alder (Ainus incana) and white birch (Betula pubescens) trees under field conditions. In alder leaves 20 and in birch leaves 13 different phenolic metabolites were identified. The response to UV exclusion varied between and within groups of phenolics in both tree species. The changes in concentration for some metabolites suggest effects of only UV-A or UV-B, which band being effective depending on the metabolite.
