Eukaryotic RUBISCO appears in two sequence-diverging forms, known as red-like (present in nongreen algae) and green-like (of green algae and higher plants) types. Oxidation of cysteines from green-like RUBISCOs is known to result in conformational changes that inactivate the enzyme and render a relaxed structure more prone to proteolytic attack. These changes may have regulatory value for green algae and higher plants, promoting RUBISCO catabolism under stress conditions. In order to investigate the pharmacological screening of a number of pyran-4-ones their synthesis by cyclization with sulphuric acid of the corresponding 1,3,5-triketones has been carried out with high yields. In the course of preparation of the latter the reaction of 2-acetyltetralone with some esters of benzoic acid derivatives has been studied and in particular, for a number of them, an interesting nucleophilic substitution of a chlorine atom with an alkoxy group on a benzenic nucleus has been evidenced.

Acid-base catalysis with bifunctional catalysts is a very prominent catalytic strategy in both small-molecule organocatalysts as well as enzyme catalysis. In both worlds, small-molecule catalysts and enzymatic catalysis, a variety of different general acids or hydrogen bond donors are used. In this chapter, important parallels between small molecule catalysts and enzymes are discussed, and a comparison is also made to the emerging field of frustrated Lewis pair catalysis.

Humic substances influence the speciation and migration behavior of toxic and radiotoxic metal ions, such as actinides, in the environment. Depending on their origin, humic substances contain different amounts of sulfur ranging from 0.1 to 3.6% and 0.5 to 1.43% in soil and aquatic humic substances, respectively [1]. Reduced, intermediately oxidized and highly oxidized sulfur functionalities occur in humic substances [1]. Abstract The effects of MgCl2 on the oestrogen-dominated rat uterus have been examined. Tissues were preincubated in a Ca2+- and Mg2+-free medium containing 3 mM EDTA. Most experiments were subsequently performed in a similar medium containing either no EDTA or EDTA (1 mM). When MgCl2 was added cumulatively (1–32 mM) no contractile responses were obtained in Ca,Mg-free medium or in Ca,Mg-free high K+ solution. When 2 mM CaCl2 as added, a sustained contraction was obtained. Subsequent addition of cumulative concentrations of MgCl2 caused concentration-dependent relaxation. Incorporation of specific elements into calcium phosphates offers the combination of a bioactive material and a therapeutic effect. This is important for improving the integration of implants as well as treating medical conditions. Strontium is a suitable candidate and displays the ability to stimulate bone growth and reducing bone resorption. The current research focuses on peroxide ion incorporation in the structure of strontium hydroxyapatite (SrHAp) by exposure to H2O2 ina closed hydrothermal vessel under mild conditions at 130 to 170 °C. Peroxide enriched strontium apatite (SrPerAp) was characterized for structure by X-Ray diffraction, for peroxide content- by permanganometric titration and then viewed by SEM. Protected but Accessible: Oxygen Activation by a Calixarene-Stabilized Undecagold Cluster

DFT computations show that calixarenes stabilize subnanometer Au11 clusters allowing access of small molecules like O2 to reactive metal sites in the core. Maximum of three dioxygen molecules can bind to the cluster, and they are activated to a superoxo O2(-) state. This study predicts that gold clusters could act as viable oxidation catalysts at ambient conditions based on similar principles as the metal centers in enzymes.

The goal of this study was to investigate the clinical course and outcomes of patients with COVID-19 undergoing mechanical ventilation and identify factors associated with death.
