Empire and Democracy. A critical reading of Michael Ignatieff

Empires expand their hegemony combined two contrasting forces; one is violence the second is characterized by persuasion. Ideology works in these contexts, as an efficient instrument of self-indoctrination whereby dominated cultures accept the cultural matrix of empire. In this vein, the present essay-review not only questions the employment of human rights in the liberal thought, but also tries to respond to the conceptual problems of liberalism to understand terrorism. Based on two seminal texts written by the liberal Michael Ignatieff, we formulate the thesis that liberalism supports the war against terror because of its doctrine of self-determination.

Phylogenomic studies have improved understanding of deep metazoan phylogeny and show promise for resolving incongruences among analyses based on limited numbers of loci. One region of the animal tree that has been especially difficult to resolve, even with phylogenomic approaches, is relationships within Lophotrochozoa (the animal clade that includes molluscs, annelids, and flatworms among others). Abstract Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is characterized by pathologic immune activation which occurs either as a familial disorder or as an acquired condition. The diagnosis of HLH requires the presence of five out of nine criteria: fever, splenomegaly, pancytopenia, hypertriglyceridemia, hypofibrinogenemia, hemophagocytosis in bone marrow, hyperferritinemia, low or absent natural killer cell activity and high level of soluble interleukin-2 receptor. Porous zirconia and titania as packing materials for high-performance liquid chromatography

Abstract Porous amorphous zirconia (ZrO 2 ) and titania (TiO 2 ) packings were synthesized as rigid microparticulate beads by means of a sol—gel process. Sufficient rigidity and desired mesoporosity of the ZrO 2 and TiO 2 particles were achieved only by a gel hardening process, followed by heat treatment. The mean pore diameter, p d , the specific surface area, a s , and the specific pore volume, ν p , were controlled by the heat treatment. Typical values were p d = 8 nm, a s = 80 m 2 /g and ν p = 0.23 ml/g. Investigation of surface properties of lunar regolith: Part I

This paper describes an initial investigation of the surface properties of three lunar soil samples from the Apollo 11, 12 and 16 missions, respectively. We report on density measurements using a helium pycnometer, adsorption isotherms of krypton applied for the determination of specific surface area of the samples and gravimetric measurement of the isotherms of water, heptane and octane. Electron-microscopic photographs are described and discussed.

Pest suppression is an important ecosystem service provided by biodiversity, though antagonistic interactions may jeopardize its impact on pest suppression. Hyperparasitoids may release herbivore populations from natural enemy pressure and lead to outbreaks directly due to parasitism as well as indirect through behavioural interference. In a previous study we reported that in native populations of Euproctis chrysorrhoea L. (Lymantriidae) primary parasitism was very low and outbreaks were more likely in coastal habitats than inland. Histone H3 Lysine 4 Mono-methylation does not Require Ubiquitination of Histone H2B

The yeast Set1-complex catalyzes histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4) methylation. Using N-terminal Edman sequencing, we determined that 50% of H3K4 is methylated and consists of roughly equal amounts of mono, di and tri-methylated H3K4. We further show that loss of either Paf1 of the Paf1 elongation complex, or ubiquitination of histone H2B, has only a modest effect on bulk histone mono-methylation at H3K4. Despite the fact that Set1 recruitment decreases in paf1delta cells, loss of Paf1 results in an increase of H3K4 mono-methylation at the 5' coding region of active genes, suggesting a Paf1-independent targeting of Set1.
