Influence of melatonin and serotonin on the number of rat pineal ?synaptic? ribbons and spherules in vitro

Previous studies have shown that the "synaptic" ribbons (SR) and spherules (SS) of the mammalian pineal gland may respond differently under physiological and various experimental conditions. The aim of the present study was to gain insight into the mechanisms that may be responsible for the numerical changes of these organelles during a 24-h cycle. As the possibility exists that the structures are influenced by substances synthesized within the pinealocyte, rat pineal glands were cultured with and without added melatonin or serotonin, using an experimental protocol such that the addition of melatonin and serotonin mimicks the circadian changes of the respective substances within the pineal.…

Abstract Dialkyltin(IV) and trialkyltin(IV) complexes of the deacetoxycephalo-sporin-antibiotic cephalexin [7-( d -2-amino-2-phenylacetamido)-3-methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid] (Hceph) have been synthesized and investigated both in solid and solution phase. Analytical and thermogravimetric data supported the general formula Alk 2 SnOHceph · H 2 O and Alk 3 Snceph · H 2 O (Alk=Me, n -Bu), while structural information has been gained by FT-IR, 119 Sn Mossbauer and 1 H, 13 C, 119 Sn NMR data. Folfirinox in elderly patients with pancreatic or colorectal cancer-tolerance and efficacy

AIM To study the tolerance and the efficiency of FOLFIRINOX in elderly patients diagnosed with colorectal or pancreatic cancer. METHODS This retrospective study included elderly patients aged over 70 years of age treated at Georges-Francois Leclerc Center by FOLFIRINOX for histological proved colorectal or pancreatic cancer between January 2009 and January 2015. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a transmembrane protein with significantly increased expression in the cells and metastases of prostate carcinoma (CaP). PSMA-expression correlates with higher serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and a higher Gleason score (GS). Complex I dysfunction and tolerance to nitroglycerin: an approach based on mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants.

Nitroglycerin (GTN) tolerance was induced in vivo (rats) and in vitro (rat and human vessels). Electrochemical detection revealed that the incubation dose of GTN (5×10 −6 mol/L) did not release NO or modify O 2 consumption when administered acutely. However, development of tolerance produced a decrease in both mitochondrial O 2 consumption and the K m for O 2 in animal and human vessels and endothelial cells in a noncompetitive action. GTN tolerance has been associated with impairment of GTN biotransformation through inhibition of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH)-2, and with uncoupling of mitochondrial respiration. Interrelationship between demethylation of p-nitroanisole and conjugation of p-nitrophenol in rat liver

The metabolism of p-nitroanisole (pNA) and p-nitrophenol (pNP) was studied in isolated rat livers perfused with a hemoglobin-free medium. The activity and viability of the surviving organ was tested by recording pH, “arterial” and “venous” oxygen tension as well as the disappearance of added pNP. pNA is converted to its primary metabolite pNP which, in turn, is excreted into the perfusion medium as conjugates. The coordination of pNA oxidation and the conjugation reactions of pNP were investigated. When 50 μM pNA is added as substrate 0.4±0.1 nmoles×ml−1×(g liver)−1 are excreted as pNP-glucuronide and 3.5±0.2 nmoles×ml−1×(g liver)−1 as the sulphate within 90 min. When pNP itself (50 μM) is …

Abstract Background Magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) requires intra-articular injection of gadolinium-based diluted paramagnetic contrast material. To our knowledge, gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA) has never been used for intra-articular applications. Acute toxicity of dichlorvos to Aphanius iberus (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1846) and its anti-cholinesterase effects on this species

This study evaluates the toxic effects of the organophosphate pesticide (OP) dichlorvos to the endangered Iberian toothcarp (Aphanius iberus). To this end, the lethal toxicity of dichlorvos based on 96 h-LC50 bioassays was determined in saline water (50 g/L), and in vivo effects of dichlorvos on cholinesterase (ChE) activity were investigated in adult female and male specimens. The 96 h-LC50 value determined by probit analysis was 3.17 mg/L (95% confidence limits: 1.34-3.97).
