Position sensitive scintillator based detector improvements by means of an integrated front-end

2009

PESIC is an integrated front-end for multianode photomultiplier based nuclear imaging devices. Its architecture has been designed to improve position sensitive detectors behavior by equalizing its response over its whole area. Its preamplying stage introduces two main benefits: digitally programmable gain adjustment for every photomultiplier output, and isolation from other front-end electronics by means of current buffers. This last feature allows to use different types of photomultipliers and optimizes front-end deadtime, reducing impact position dependent output delay. PESIC also includes an indirect measurement of the depth of interaction of the gamma ray inside the scintillator crystal…

Breakthrough in the lifetime of microchannel plate photomultipliers

2015

Abstract Cherenkov detectors using the DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov Light) principle are foreseen for particle identification in the P ¯ ANDA experiment at FAIR. Promising sensors for the detection of the Cherenkov light are the so-called micro-channel plate (MCP) photomultipliers (PMT). They have an excellent time resolution, can be operated at high gain for single photon detection and have a high resistivity against magnetic fields. The disadvantage of these devices was their limited lifetime, due to damage by feedback ions on the photocathode. The lifetime of various types of MCP-PMTs from different manufactures has been tested under conditions similar to that in the…

A scintillator based time-of-flight hodoscope with a new type of emitter follower divider

2004

A high precision, time-of-flight hodoscope has been constructed to analyse the secondary pion beam at GSI, Darmstadt. The hodoscope comprises three scintillator planes with the individual scintillator rods read out by photomultipliers in both ends. A new active base of the emitter follower type has been developed for stabilization of voltages at the last dynodes of the photomultiplier. The time resolution of this system was found to be sigma less than or equal to 150 ps for counting rates up to 2 MHz.

Fast photon detection for COMPASS RICH-1

2007

A fast photon detection system has been built and assembled for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The system is based on multianode photomultipliers coupled to fused silica lenses to collect the light from a larger surface and to guide it to the photocathode, preserving the position information. The emphasis is on the fast response and high rate capability of the detectors and the associated electronics. The photon detection system is now ready and it will be employed in the 2006 COMPASS data taking. We report about the system design and construction.

Gain stabilization and noise minimization for SiPMs at cryogenic temperatures

2018

Abstract The performance of solid-state photon detectors such as avalanche photodiodes or silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is strongly affected by temperature. Important device characteristics for the detection of low light levels or single photons are photon detection efficiency, dark noise, and gain. In the present work the C-series SiPMs from SensL was characterized in cryogenic environments. At 77  K the SiPMs proved to be an excellent choice for single photon detection and an operation point with minimum noise contributions was found. At 4  K the performance was degraded, exhibiting a smaller gain and a larger noise.

AX-PET: A novel PET concept with G-APD readout

2012

Abstract The AX-PET collaboration has developed a novel concept for high resolution PET imaging to overcome some of the performance limitations of classical PET cameras, in particular the compromise between spatial resolution and sensitivity introduced by the parallax error. The detector consists of an arrangement of long LYSO scintillating crystals axially oriented around the field of view together with arrays of wave length shifter strips orthogonal to the crystals. This matrix allows a precise 3D measurement of the photon interaction point. This is valid both for photoelectric absorption at 511 keV and for Compton scattering down to deposited energies of about 100 keV. Crystals and WLS s…

Measurement of the response of Silicon Photomultipliers from single photon detection to saturation

2019

Abstract The development of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) is very dynamic and a large variety of types exists. Important SiPM characteristics include the size and number of pixels, the gain, the photon detection efficiency (PDE), the recovery time, and correlated noise. SiPMs are particularly suitable for single-photon detection and low-intensity exposures. For photon numbers (PDE corrected) reaching the number of pixels, however, the sensors saturate. In this work, we present comprehensive response measurements for state-of-the-art SiPMs using an experimental setup based on a tunable picosecond laser. Several models are applied to the measured response curves, taking particularly correla…

A low-noise and fast pre-amplifier and readout system for SiPMs

2015

Abstract To operate silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) in a demanding environment with large temperature gradients, different amplifier concepts were characterized by analyzing SiPM pulse-shapes and charge distributions. A fully differential 4-wire SiPM pre-amplifier with separated tracks for the bias voltage and with good common-mode noise suppression was developed and successfully tested. To achieve highest single-pixel resolutions an online after-pulse and pile-up suppression was realized with fast readout electronics based on digital filters.

The AX-PET demonstrator—Design, construction and characterization

2011

Abstract Axial PET is a novel geometrical concept for Positron Emission Tomography (PET), based on layers of long scintillating crystals axially aligned with the bore axis. The axial coordinate is obtained from arrays of wavelength shifting (WLS) plastic strips placed orthogonally to the crystals. This article describes the design, construction and performance evaluation of a demonstrator set-up which consists of two identical detector modules, used in coincidence. Each module comprises 48 LYSO crystals of 100 mm length and 156 WLS strips. Crystals and strips are readout by Geiger-mode Avalanche Photo Diodes (G-APDs). The signals from the two modules are processed by fully analog front-end …

The large-area hybrid-optics CLAS12 RICH detector: Tests of innovative components

2014

A large area ring-imaging Cherenkov detector has been designed to provide clean hadron identification capability in the momentum range from 3 GeV/c to 8 GeV/c for the CLAS12 experiments at the upgraded 12 GeV continuous electron beam accelerator facility of Jefferson Lab to study the 3D nucleon structure in the yet poorly explored valence region by deep-inelastic scattering, and to perform precision measurements in hadronization and hadron spectroscopy. The adopted solution foresees a novel hybrid optics design based on an aerogel radiator, composite mirrors and densely packed and highly segmented photon detectors. Cherenkov light will either be imaged directly (forward tracks) or after two…
