Anthropometric and physical characteristics allow differentiation of young female volleyball players according to playing position and level of exper…

2017

The aim of our study was to determine the differences in some anthropometric and physical performance variables of young Croatian female volleyball players (aged 13 to 15) in relation to playing position (i.e., independent variable) and performance level within each position (i.e., independent variable). Players were categorized according to playing position (i.e., role) as middle blockers (n=28), opposite hitters (n=41), passer-hitters (n=54), setters (n=30), and liberos (n=28). Within each position, players were divided into a more successful group and a less successful group according to team ranking in the latest regional championship and player quality within the team. Height and body …

Stellenwert der horizontalen Lidspaltung nach Wies in der Entropiumchirurgie

2010

The horizontal blepharotomy or Wies procedure is a simple and quick surgical procedure for the correction of an involutional entropion. The procedure is directed against two of the at least three most important pathogenetic factors (horizontal lid loosening and overriding the preseptal orbicularis muscle). This article gives an overview of the literature and significance of this procedure gained in the 50 years since its first description.

Assessment of the cardiostimulant action of propionyl-L-carnitine on chronically volume-overloaded rat hearts.

1993

Chronic volume overload was induced in young rats of Wistar strain by surgical opening of the aorto-caval fistula. Three months later, during in vitro perfusion with exogenous palmitate, left ventricular function and energy turnover (QO2) of hypertrophied hearts were severely depressed. This seemed to be related to impaired long-chain fatty acid utilization, as reflected by decreased 14CO2 production from U-14C-palmitate and decreased tissue levels of L-carnitine. Another group of rats exposed to chronic volume overload was pretreated for 2 weeks before sacrifice with propionyl-L-carnitine (250 mg/kg/day), and the hearts were perfused with 1.2 mM palmitate and 10 mM propionyl-L-carnitine. Fluticasone propionate/formoterol: a fixed-combination therapy with flexible dosage.

2014

International guidelines describe asthma control as the main outcome of asthma management. Prevention of symptoms, improved quality of life, and reduction of exacerbations are the main components, consequently decreasing health care costs. However, many of these objectives remain unmet in real life: several surveys show that a large proportion of asthmatic patients are not well controlled despite the efficacy of current available treatment. Several randomized controlled clinical trials indicate that combining inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2-agonists, by means of a single inhaler, greatly improves the management of the disease. The results of 9 multicenter phase III clinical studi…

Case report supporting that the Barber-Say and ablepharon macrostomia syndromes could represent one disorder.

2009

We report on a 7-year-old girl with unequivocal features of Barber-Say syndrome (BSS): generalized hypertrichosis especially at the back, dry lax skin, macrostomia, thin lips, cup-shaped ears, bulbous nose, hypoplastic nipples, and abnormal external genitalia. She also demonstrated conductive hearing impairment and microblepharon. BSS has been reported with ectropion (not present in our patient), but ablepharon and microblepharon (i.e., absent or hypoplastic eyelids) have always been considered as hallmarks of ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS). This is the first report of microblepharon in BSS. Other authors have discussed that BSS and AMS could possibly represent one syndrome, and our …

The ARIETTA study: baseline demographics in a real-world setting in patients with severe asthma

2017

Introduction and Aim: As recognition of asthma heterogeneity increases and targeted treatment options are introduced, the future role of biomarkers (BM) in patient (pt) selection, monitoring and risk prediction will be important. We report baseline demographic and clinical characteristics from ARIETTA, an ongoing, prospective, longitudinal study assessing the relationship between BM and disease-related health outcomes in the real world. Methods: Pts with severe asthma (GINA steps 4-5) receiving daily inhaled corticosteroids (CS; fluticasone propionate ≥500 μg or equivalent) and ≥1 second controller medication were enrolled. Study enrollment is now complete. BM, clinical characteristics and …

Monitoring stress and recovery states: Structural and external stages of the short version of the RESTQ sport in elite swimmers before championships

2016

Background: Psychological stress and recovery monitoring is a key issue for increasing athletes' health, well-being, and performance. This multi-study report examined changes and the dose–response relationships between recovery–stress psychological states, training load (TL), heart rate (HR), heart rate recovery (HRR), and heart rate variability (HRV) while providing evidence for the factorial validity of a short French version of the Recovery–Stress Questionnaire for Athletes (RESTQ-36-R-Sport). Methods: Four hundred and seventy-three university athletes (Study 1), 72 full expert swimmers (Study 2), and 11 national to international swimmers (Study 3) participated in the study. Data were an…

Comparative cytoprotective effects of carbocysteine and fluticasone propionate in cigarette smoke extract-stimulated bronchial epithelial cells

2013

Cigarette smoke extracts (CSE) induce oxidative stress, an important feature in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and oxidative stress contributes to the poor clinical efficacy of corticosteroids in COPD patients. Carbocysteine, an antioxidant and mucolytic agent, is effec- tive in reducing the severity and the rate of exacerbations in COPD patients. The effects of carbocysteine on CSE-induced oxidative stress in bronchial epithelial cells as well as the comparison of these antioxidant effects of carbocysteine with those of fluticasone propionate are unknown. The present study was aimed to assess the effects of carbocysteine (10−4 M) in cell survival and intracellular reactive o…

Patterns of rapid weight loss in elite sambo athletes

2021

Abstract Background Rapid weight loss (RWL) is commonly practiced in combat sports. Both magnitude and methods used to induce RWL are largely similar among combat sports, but currently, there is no data on RWL methodology used by sambo athletes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine RWL procedures sambo athletes apply to lose weight rapidly. Methods The sample consisted of 199 participants, of which 132 males and 67 females who participated in the World Sambo Championship 2020 held in Novi Sad, Serbia. Each participant received RWL questionnaire that was available in multiple languages, and every participant was instructed how to fill it out. Results Almost 87% of sambo particip…

1539 Length of Hospital Stay in Children with Acute Viral Pneumonia Treated with Corticosteroids, A Retrospective Study

2012

Background Corticosteroids with or without ephedrine may have positive effects in viral pneumonia treatment accelerating the time to resolution of symtpoms but the evidence is not strong enough to make specific recommandations. Objectives Evaluating the hospital length stay of the children with viral pneumonia treated with corticosteroids, single or in combination with ephedrine. Material and Methods The retrospective study included pacients admitted in our clinic with viral pneumonia during 2011. From 167 cases, 78 cases were selected according to specific criteria: patients having received cortisone (hydrocortisone hemisuccinate and/or fluticasone propionate) associated or not with ephedr…
