Efficiency optimization in bi-directional inductive power transfer systems
2015
Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) allows to wirelessly supply electronic devices. Thus, it is a very smart technique of battery charging for electric vehicles. In a parking area scenario, IPT is a proper method aiming at the energy transfer from the vehicle battery to the electric grid too. Bi-Directional Inductive Power Transfer (BDIPT) Systems are an attractive solution for the automotive market. Due to the great relevance of the energy saving problem, the goal of an efficiency maximization is researched by the energy market. In this paper, an in-depth investigation of the power efficiency in BDIPT systems is carried out, aiming at the optimum efficiency.
A Phase-Shift Full Bridge Converter for the Energy Management of Electrolyzer Systems
2007
The purpose of this work has been the development of the supplying system for an industrial electrolyzer. The hydrogen generating device is part of a complex system constituted by a supplying photovoltaic plant, the grid and a fuel cell battery. The main aim of this electrical system is the hydrogen storage devoted to the suitable load supplying in order to obtain an optimum load profile in case of domestic consumers. The converter is linked to a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm which enables a converter to extract the maximum power from the photovoltaic plant. The energy is supplied to the electrolyzer or the storage system according to the load profile. A phase-shift control …
Stationary battery systems in the main world markets: Part 2: Main trends and prospects
2017
Stationary battery systems are gaining a lot of interest in recent years, mainly because of their ability to balance generation and demand of electricity over time. The intermittent nature of renewable generation connected to the power grid is causing major stability and reliability issues in the power system, that can be solved also using stationary storage systems, able to provide the ancillary services necessary to the proper operation of the power network. Despite the considerable advantages offered by these technologies, the electrochemical storage industry is still in the nascent state and it is important to identify the main trends and prospects in relation to future technical develo…
A Small Power Transmission Prototype for Electric Vehicle Wireless Battery Charge Applications
2012
In this paper a low cost prototype of wireless power transfer system based on air coupling is presented. The system here proposed can be useful for electric vehicle (EV) battery charging systems. It consists mainly of two copper wire coils, placed one in front of the other on the same axis. The inductor coil can easily be placed under the road surface (in a parking), while the other (the receiver coil) in the lower side of the vehicle. By exploiting the coils resonance coupling effect, electric energy can be transferred from the inductor coil to the receiver in order to charge the batteries. Low cost experimental tests carried out at DIEETCAM - University of Palermo, demonstrated the effect…
Numerical and experimental validation of a LiFePO<inf>4</inf> battery model at steady state and transient operations
2013
In the paper some of the battery models proposed in literature are analysed in order to predict the battery performance and, then, make sure that the Battery Management System (BMS) that is a key component to check and control the status of the batteries within their specified safe operating conditions, works in best conditions. In fact to reach an extended battery lifetime and increase the reliability of the system, is necessary to guarantee an accurate evaluation of the state of the whole stack of batteries to track their operations. Therefore, an accurate battery model that captures the dynamics of the battery is required. Lithium batteries are in particular considered because of their h…
Fuel cell modelling for power supply systems design
2008
Today academic and industrial research is addressed on fuel cell based power supply to replace current lithium-ion and similar rechargeable battery systems. For system simulation, fuel cell models are developed. Even if power electronics designers demand for a blackbox model to limit the knowledge of physical and chemical parameters, high performance in terms of model accuracy and portability is absolutely necessary. A steady state and dynamic fuel cell model oriented to power supply systems design is proposed and, as an example, the implementation on PSIM software is presented. Simulation and experimental results are compared and the model portability is discussed. ©2008 IEEE.
An inductive charger for automotive applications
2016
The inductive charging represents a valid solution for the power transfer in automotive applications. Due to the Inductive Power Transfer (IPT), the wireless battery charging of Electric Vehicles (EVs) provides several benefits. In this paper, an inductive charger which is particularly suitable for electrical bicycles is proposed. A practical realization of the system has been carried out, and the system has been tested in terms of working and efficiency. Through a Phase Shift Modulation (PSM), a power regulation has been implemented. The target power is 100 W.
A photovoltaic charging system of an electrically assisted tricycle for touristic purposes
2013
In this paper the design, realization and testing of a photovoltaic charging system suitable for the management of an electrically power assisted tricycle are described. This vehicle uses a photovoltaic module as a source of electric energy for the battery recharging. In this work, an overview on the needs of sustainable mobility and on the commercial electrically power assisted velocipedes is presented. The electrical rickshaw prototype, developed in the SDELab laboratory of the University of Palermo, is presented in detail, underlining the design, implementation and developing phases of the photovoltaic charging system assembled on the velocipede. Moreover, tests oriented on the setting u…
Adapting power consumption to performance requirements in a MSP430 microcontroller
2005
Microcontroller based low power systems using batteries must run at low clock frequencies with short activity periods to extend battery life. These constraints reduce the microcontroller computational capabilities and limit the complexity of algorithms that can be used. New microcontroller architectures, as the Texas Instruments MSP430 family, allow to adapt power consumption to application performance requirements combining several low power modes with the capability of switching the clock frequency dynamically. A complete characterization of power consumption vs. performance has been obtained for the MSP430. A method to determine the range of clock frequencies that meets a consumption and…
A measurement setup for electric bicycles powered from renewable energy sources
2014
In this paper a measurement system for a pedalassist rickshaw is described. It has been designed and realized with the purpose of a deep analysis of operating time, range and general performance of the prototype vehicle. The three-wheel velocipede under test, developed in the SDES laboratory of the University of Palermo, is equipped with two battery packs, and a photovoltaic panel which is used to recharge one of the packs at a time. To further improve the autonomy of this mean, a fuel cell will be added as a power source, whose consequent improvement in performance could be easily investigated by the presented measurement setup. An Arduino board has been employed to receive and store all c…
