Early phonological skills as a predictor of reading acquisition: a follow-up study from kindergarten to the middle of grade 2.

2003

The purpose of this study was to investigate the power of early measures of phonological skills (phonemic awareness, rapid naming, short-term memory) in predicting later reading skills at various points of time. About 70 children were followed from the end of kindergarten to the middle of grade 2. Correlation analyses were performed as well as a linear growth curve analyses. In the traditional regression analysis, phonemic awareness in kindergarten explained about 27% of the variance in word reading six months later and about 9.5% of the variance at the end of grade 1. Even when prior level of reading skill was included in the predictive equation, a significant amount of variance was still …

Rationale and design of the Prospective LongitudinAl Trial of FFRCT: Outcome and Resource IMpacts study

2015

International audience; BACKGROUND: Fractional flow reserve (FFR) measured by coronary computed tomography angiography (FFRCT) has been validated against invasive FFR. However, there are no data on how the use of FFRCT affects patient care and outcomes. The aim of this study is to compare standard practice guided by usual care testing to FFRCT-guided management in symptomatic subjects with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: In this prospective nonrandomized trial, symptomatic patients with suspected CAD will be enrolled in 2 consecutive cohorts: a usual care-guided pathway (cohort 1) and an FFRCT-guided pathway (cohort 2). Each cohort is divided into 2 groups according to whe…

A bio-clinical approach for prediction of sudden cardiac death in outpatients with heart failure: The ST2-SCD score

2019

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is one of the main modes of death in heart failure (HF) patients and its prediction remains a real challenge. Our aim was to assess the incidence of SCD at 5 years HF contemporary managed outpatients, and to find a simple prediction model for SCD.SCD was considered any unexpected death, witnessed or not, occurring in a previously stable patient with no evidence of worsening HF or any other cause of death. A competing risk strategy was adopted using the Fine-Gray method of Cox regressions analyses that considered other causes of death as the competing event. The derivation cohort included 744 consecutive outpatients (72% men, age 67.9 ± 12.2 years, left ventricular …

Prognostic information of glycogen phosphorylase isoenzyme BB in patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome.

2012

Early and adequate risk stratification is essential in patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether glycogen phosphorylase BB (GPBB) could add prognostic information in the context of contemporary sensitive troponin I determination and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). Patients with suspected ACS were consecutively enrolled at 3 German study centers from January 2007 through December 2008. Troponin I, GPBB, and BNP were determined at admission. Follow-up information on the combined end point of death, myocardial infarction, revascularization, and hospitalization owing to a cardiovascular cause was obtained 6 months after enro…

Prognostic value of plasma tissue factor and tissue factor pathway inhibitor for cardiovascular death in patients with coronary artery disease: the A…

2007

Summary. Background: Tissue factor (TF) and its specific inhibitor, tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), are important contributors to the initiation of the coagulation process. Objectives: To compare plasma levels of soluble TF (sTF) and free-TFPI (f-TFPI) between patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and to assess the impact of the two variables on long-term prognosis. Patients/methods: Patients with SAPs (n = 1146) and acute coronary syndrome (n = 523) from the AtheroGene study were included and followed for 2.3 years. Because of the strong impact of unfractionated heparin (UFH) on f-TFPI levels, but not on sTF levels, patients having received UF…

Prognostic role of aldosterone in patients with acute coronary syndrome: short and medium term follow-up.

2013

AIMS: Different studies have shown a correlation between aldosterone, atherosclerosis and ischemia in the past decade. Evidence exists for the relationship between high levels of aldosterone and augmented risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, cardiac failure, coronary artery disease and stroke. The objective of this study was to determine the prognostic role of aldosterone in patients with myocardial infarction. METHODS: The study population included 96 consecutive patients admitted to our department for ST-elevated and non-ST-elevated myocardial infarction from June 2009 to March 2012. Plasma aldosterone levels were measured at admission to hospital in all patients. A 2-ye…

Ventricular dysfunction and number of non compacted segments in non compaction: Non-independent predictors.

2010

Abstract Background Isolated ventricular noncompaction (IVNC) is characterized by multiple prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses. Some reports prove that the chronic heart failure may occur in approximately half of the patients. In this report we investigate the correlation between the number of non compacted segments and entity of systolic dysfunction from the registry and subregistries of the SIEC. Method To identify the correlation between ventricular dysfunction and number of segments involved in non compaction we evaluated a consecutive series of 238 patients affected by non compaction, from the SIEC (Societa Italiana di Ecografia Cardiovascolare) registry. The ave…

Bone status assessed by quantitative ultrasound in children with inflammatory bowel disease: a comparison with DXA

2016

Background: To determine the bone status in children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measurement at hand phalanges and compare the obtained results with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Methods: Fifty-one children with IBD underwent DXA and QUS measurements at hand phalanges in the year 2013. The control group for the QUS consisted of 460 children. Reference data for DXA comes from Hologic Explorer. Results: QUS measurements did not differ significantly between IBD patients and healthy controls. There was no difference between UC and CD subjects. DXA measurements in patients with IBD were lower than in the healthy population. Tanner stage an…

Vesicoureteral reflux in young patients: Comparison of voiding color Doppler US with echo enhancement versus voiding cystourethrography for diagnosis…

2004

We assessed the accuracy of voiding color Doppler ultrasonography (US) with echo enhancement for diagnosis or exclusion of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) versus voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) and evaluated patient tolerance of the echo-enhancing agent. One hundred twenty-two patients (ages range, 1 month to 17 years) with 244 ureterorenal units underwent voiding color Doppler US with echo enhancement, which was followed by VCUG on the same day. After US of the urinary tract, the bladder was filled with saline solution via catheter. Then an echo-enhancing agent was instilled, and color Doppler US was performed. Reflux was diagnosed when microbubbles appeared in the ureter or the pelvicalicea…
