Monte Carlo dosimetric study of the medium dose rate CSM40 source

2013

Abstract The 137Cs medium dose rate (MDR) CSM40 source model (Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG, Germany) is in clinical use but no dosimetric dataset has been published. This study aims to obtain dosimetric data for the CSM40 source for its use in clinical practice as required by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO). Penelope2008 and Geant4 Monte Carlo codes were used to characterize this source dosimetrically. It was located in an unbounded water phantom with composition and mass density as recommended by AAPM and ESTRO. Due to the low photon energies of 137Cs, absorbed dose was approximated by collisional kerma. Add…

The dependence of dichroism in VUV-photoemission on the optical properties of adsorbates: Cs-monolayer on W(110)

1998

Abstract We report on the dependence of dichroic photoemission excited by polarised light on the angle of photon incidence. We measured the difference in the angle-resolved photoemission intensities from Cs-5p semi-corelevels excited by photons of opposite helicity, known as CDAD and of orthogonal linear polarisation—LDAD. We found that the dependence of dichroism on the angle of incidence can not be described by the equations used in the photoemission model for free atomic states. A complex consideration of the parallel and perpendicular components of the vector potential of the exciting light is needed, including the phase shift between these components. The phase shift is produced by the…

Bulk sensitive photo emission spectroscopy of compounds

2007

This work reports about bulk-sensitive, high energy photoelectron spectroscopy from the valence band of CoTiSb excited by photons from 1.2 to 5 keV energy. The high energy photoelectron spectra were taken at the KMC-1 high energy beamline of BESSY II employing the recently developed Phoibos 225 HV analyser. The measurements show a good agreement to calculations of the electronic structure using the LDA scheme. It is shown that the high energy spectra reveal the bulk electronic structure better compared to low energy XPS spectra.

Role of ΔpH in the mechanism of zeaxanthin-dependent amplification of qE

1995

Abstract The influence of zeaxanthin on the high-energy-state fluorescence quenching (qE) and the pH dependence of the maximum chlorophyll fluorescence yield (Fm) was examined in spinach thylakoids. High contents of zeaxanthin were achieved using different pretreatments. A pronounced, zeaxanthin-dependent amplification of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was exclusively found in thylakoids containing zeaxanthin, synthesized in the dark via the buildup of an artificial ΔpH. These thylakoids also showed a significant quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence in the range pH 5.5–6.3, where no or only slight quenching was visible in zeaxanthin-free thylakoids. Thylakoids containing high amounts of…

A Preliminary Estimation of the Direct Ultraviolet Spectral Irradiance in Valencia (Spain): Comparison with Measured Values

2000

UVSPEC and SMARTS2 models have been used to estimate the UV spectral irradiance values in Valencia, Spain, and the results of these estimations have been compared with experimental measurements of direct irradiance at normal incidence obtained using an Optronic OL 754 in the 300-400 nm range. The relative RMSD and MBD parameters have been used to estimate the deviations of the modelled values with respect to the experimental values. The results indicate that the deviations are smaller when the SMARTS2 model is used with the appropriate aerosol coefficients.

Archaeometric study of ceramic figurines from the Maya settlement of La Blanca (Petén, Guatemala)

2014

Abstract In this article, analytical results will be presented and discussed regarding a selected set of figurines from the ancient Maya settlement of La Blanca in Peten, Guatemala. The objective is to characterize the ceramic material by two analytical complementary techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD) and total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). The data obtained by means of both XRD and TXRF were compared and analyzed by multivariate statistical techniques in order to obtain sample groups according to their chemical composition. The results of this archaeometric study have been compared to those that have been obtained through macroscopic characterization by means of the traditional cl…

The decay of 133mXe.

2007

The decay of (133m)Xe has been re-measured using an electron-transporter spectrometer and a planar HPGe detector. The sample of (133m)Xe was produced by means of proton-induced fission using an ion-guide based on-line mass separator. The deduced K and L+M+... shell conversion coefficients, alpha(Kappa)=6.5(9) and alpha(L+M+...)=2.9(4), agree within the uncertainty limits with the theoretical values and remove the inconsistencies between the previous experimental studies of (133m)Xe.

A combined 148Gd/244Cm source for energy calibration of α-spectrometers

2005

For high-resolution alpha-particle spectroscopy, detector calibration sources of highest performance are required concerning thickness and homogeneity. In addition, the alpha-emitting radionuclides must have adequate half-lives and alpha-emission energies. This paper describes a new type of alpha-emitting calibration source, represented by a mixture of 148Gd and 244Cm. This system covers an alpha-energy range from 3.18 MeV (148Gd) to 5.76 and 5.80 MeV (244Cm). The source has been prepared by electrolytic deposition and has good performance in terms of thickness and homogeneity.

A selective microscale x-ray fluorescence analyzing method for determination of trace elements

1973

Abstract A new selective X-ray fluorescence analyzing method for trace element determination has been developed. In this method each trace element is measured independently. The excitation source is an X-ray tube that has a changeable anode and a variable high voltage. The exciting radiation is shaped with critical absorbers. The sample is viewed at backward angles through an absorber to reduce backscattered radiation. The estimated accuracy of this method is of the order of 10 per cent in thesub-ppm range of trace element concentration in organic samples. Measurement times are of the order of a few minutes.

Valence electronic structure of polystyrenes with different tacticities : how to go (or not to go) too far ? A joint theoretical and experimental app…

1990

Abstract Monochromadzed Al-K α XPS spectra from iso- and syndiotacdc polystyrenes are analyzed with the help of theoretical band structures and densities of states produced from a valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) computation scheme. A discussion of the correlations found between the experimental and theoretical results points out to the potentialities but also to the limits of both methods.
