Classification of tall-forb vegetation in the Pamir-Alai and western Tian Shan Mountains (Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Middle Asia)
2020
Aims: To complete the syntaxonomic scheme for tall-forb vegetation of the montane and alpine belts in the Pamir-Alai and western Tian Shan Mountains in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan with some remarks on its environmental predictors. Study area: Middle Asia: Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Methods: A total of 244 relevés were sampled in 2013–2019 using the seven-degree cover-abundance scale of the Braun-Blanquet approach. These were classified with a modified TWINSPAN algorithm with pseudospecies cut-levels 0%, 5% and 25%, and total inertia as a measure of cluster heterogeneity. Diagnostic species were identified using the phi coefficient as a fidelity measure. NMDS was used to explore the relationsh…
Comparison of Pitch Range in Finnish (L1) and Russian (L2)
2007
The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the pitch range of a speaker can vary according to the language he speaks. The hypothesis is tested on Finnish university students studying Russian as a foreign language before and after their stay in Russia. First, the global pitch range (max – min) is determined. Second, the pitch range in different types of utterances (declarative, question, exclamation) is examined by superimposing pitch contours. The results indicate that the learners have a narrower pitch range and a less variable pitch than native speakers both in L1 and L2. However, the results also suggest that L2 experience seems to help most students to produce a more native-…
Persistence in complex systems
2022
Persistence is an important characteristic of many complex systems in nature, related to how long the system remains at a certain state before changing to a different one. The study of complex systems' persistence involves different definitions and uses different techniques, depending on whether short-term or long-term persistence is considered. In this paper we discuss the most important definitions, concepts, methods, literature and latest results on persistence in complex systems. Firstly, the most used definitions of persistence in short-term and long-term cases are presented. The most relevant methods to characterize persistence are then discussed in both cases. A complete literature r…
Effect of two different tooth bleaching techniques on microhardness of giomer
2016
Background Tooth bleaching is a safe and conservative treatment modality to improve the esthetic appearance of discolored teeth. One of the problems with the use of bleaching agents is their possible effect on surface microhardness of resin-based materials. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of in-office and at-home bleaching on surface microhardness of giomer. Material and Methods Seventy-five disk-shaped giomer samples (Beautifil II) were prepared and cured with a light-curing unit. The samples were randomly assigned to three groups (n=25). In group 1 (control), the samples were stored in distilled water for 14 days. The samples in groups 2 and 3 underwent a bleachin…

Integration of HVSR measures and stratigraphic constraints for seismic microzonation studies: the case of Oliveri (ME)
2014
Abstract. Because of its high seismic hazard the urban area of Oliveri has been subject of first level seismic microzonation. The town develops on a large coastal plain made of mixed fluvial/marine sediments, overlapping a complexly deformed substrate. In order to identify points on the area probably suffering relevant site effects and define a preliminary Vs subsurface model for the first level of microzonation, we performed 23 HVSR measurements. A clustering technique of continuous signals has been used to optimize the calculation of the HVSR curves. 42 reliable peaks of the H/V spectra in the frequency range 0.6–10 Hz have been identified. A second clustering technique has been applied t…
February 2017 extreme Saharan dust outbreak in the Iberian Peninsula: from lidar-derived optical properties to evaluation of forecast models
2018
Abstract. An unprecedented extreme Saharan dust event was registered in winter time from 20 to 23 February 2017 over the Iberian Peninsula (IP). We report on aerosol optical properties observed under this extreme dust outbreak through remote sensing (active and passive) techniques. For that, EARLINET (European Aerosol Research LIdar NETwork) lidar and AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) Sun-photometer Cimel CE 318 measurements are used. The sites considered are: Barcelona (41.38º N, 2.17º E), Burjassot (39.51º N, 0.42º W), Cabo da Roca (38.78º N, 9.50º W), Évora (38.57º N, 7.91º W), Granada (37.16º N, 3.61º W) and Madrid (40.45º N, 3.72º W). In general, large aerosol optical depths (AOD) and …
Temporal loudness weights in background noise: Data and models
2019
Previous studies consistently showed that human listeners primarily consider the beginning of a time-varying sound when judging its overall loudness, and place less weight on subsequent temporal portions. However, all experiments studying this primacy effect in temporal loudness weights presented the target sound in quiet. Here, we compared temporal weights when the target sound was either presented in quiet or in a continuous background noise, and for a variation in the level of the target sound across a range of 60 dB. The target sound was a time-varying narrowband noise, the background noise was a continuous bandpass-filtered noise. In all conditions, we observed the expected primacy eff…
Multiple positive normalized solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger systems
2018
We consider the existence of multiple positive solutions to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger systems sets on $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N) \times H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$, \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} -\Delta u_1 &= \lambda_1 u_1 + \mu_1 |u_1|^{p_1 -2}u_1 + \beta r_1 |u_1|^{r_1-2} u_1|u_2|^{r_2}, -\Delta u_2 &= \lambda_2 u_2 + \mu_2 |u_2|^{p_2 -2}u_2 + \beta r_2 |u_1|^{r_1} |u_2|^{r_2 -2} u_2, \end{aligned} \right. \] under the constraint \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|u_1|^2 \, dx = a_1,\quad \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|u_2|^2 \, dx = a_2. \] Here $a_1, a_2 >0$ are prescribed, $\mu_1, \mu_2, \beta>0$, and the frequencies $\lambda_1, \lambda_2$ are unknown and will appear as Lagrange multipliers. Two cases are studied, the first …
