3D polylactide-based scaffolds for studying human hepatocarcinoma processes in vitro
2012
We evaluated the combination of leaching techniques and melt blending of polymers and particles for the preparation of highly interconnected three-dimensional polymeric porous scaffolds for in vitro studies of human hepatocarcinoma processes. More specifically, sodium chloride and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were used as water-soluble porogens to form porous and solvent-free poly(L,D-lactide) (PLA)-based scaffolds. Several characterization techniques, including porosimetry, image analysis and thermogravimetry, were combined to improve the reliability of measurements and mapping of the size, distribution and microarchitecture of pores. We also investigated the effect of processing, in PLA-ba…
Star-product approach to quantum field theory: The free scalar field
1990
The star-quantization of the free scalar field is developed by introducing an integral representation of the normal star-product. A formal connection between the Feynman path integral in the holomorphic representation and the star-exponential is established for the interacting scalar fields.
Modelling sediment delivery using connectivity components at the experimental SPA2 basin, Sicily (Italy)
2018
Sediment delivery ratio can be used as a measure of sediment connectivity and it can be linked to the structural connectivity (morphological unit, slope length, slope steepness, travel time) of a basin and to the functional connectivity (rainfall-runoff processes at morphological unit scale). In this paper the sediment connectivity approach was applied at basin scale both using Sediment Delivery Distributed (SEDD) model, which takes into account the hillslope sediment transport, and sediment yield measurements carried out at SPA2 experimental basin (Sicily, Italy). The expression of the sediment delivery ratio SDRi of a morphological unit was modified for highlighting two components corresp…

Multi-pass execution of functional logic programs
1994
An operational semantics for functional logic programs is presented. In such programs functional terms provide for reduction of expressions, provided that they ground. The semantics is based on multi-pass evaluation techniques originally developed for attribute grammars. Program execution is divided into two phases: (1) construction of an incomplete proof tree, and (2) its decoration into a complete proof tree. The construction phase applies a modified SLD-resolution scheme, and the decoration phase a partial (multi-pass) traversal over the tree. The phase partition is generated by static analysis where data dependencies are extracted for the functional elements of the program. The method g…

Discovery of a novel state of the Jean Mignon signed etching of "Alexander gifting gold to the priests of Ammon".
2019
There are only two known prints signed by Jean Mignon, a decorative cartouche ("Io. MIGon. 1544") and "Alexander gifting gold to the priests of Ammon" ("Io. MIGon."). Until now, the latter was known only in one state and three proofs kept at the British Musem, the Arsenal Library and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 2016 the Dole city library purchased an album of prints that contained a different state of this engravong. A close examination further shows that the British Museum proof is actually from the same state as this Dole Library print.
Gravitational-wave parameter inference using Deep Learning
2021
We explore machine learning methods to detect gravitational waves (GW) from binary black hole (BBH) mergers using deep learning (DL) algorithms. The DL networks are trained with gravitational waveforms obtained from BBH mergers with component masses randomly sampled in the range from 5 to 100 solar masses and luminosity distances from 100 Mpc to, at least, 2000 Mpc. The GW signal waveforms are injected in public data from the O2 run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors, in time windows that do not coincide with those of known detected signals, and the data from each detector in the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo network is combined into a unique RGB image. We show that a clas…
Knowledge exchange through science diplomacy to assist disaster risk reduction
2021
Abstract This paper analyses science diplomacy efforts to reduce disaster risks and proposes establishing national knowledge exchange centers (KECs) to help individual states adhere to their Sendai Framework goals. KECs are considered to be interconnected globally and work together to promote resilience efforts by facilitating sharing of information and strategies in risk monitoring, assessment, and ultimately reduction across the globe. KECs can provide high-quality scientific evidence for informed decisionmaking along with a component related to disaster science media to ensure that appropriate knowledge reaches a variety of people who need it in different forms tailored for them. KECs ca…
