Clinical correlates of change in inflammatory biomarkers: The Framingham Heart Study
2013
Objectives: Traditional clinical risk factors are associated with inflammation cross-sectionally, but associations of longitudinal variation in inflammatory biomarkers with corresponding changes in clinical risk factors are incompletely described. We sought to analyze clinical factors associated with change in inflammation in the community. Methods: We studied 3013 Framingham Offspring (n = 2735) and Omni Cohort (n = 278) participants (mean age 59 years, 55% women, 9% ethnic/racial minority) who attended two consecutive examination cycles (mean 6.7 years apart). We selected ten inflammatory biomarkers representing distinctive biological functions: C-reactive protein (CRP), intercellular adhe…
Circulating leukocyte telomere length and oxidative stress: A new target for statin therapy
2011
International audience; Objectives: We investigated the relationship between prior statin therapy and leukocyte telomere length (LTL), as well as their interaction with potential new biomarkers of oxidative deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) lesions and reactive oxygen species-induced inflammation. Methods and results: From patients admitted for an acute myocardial infarction, LTL was assessed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR), and leukocyte Finkel-Biskis-Jinkins osteosarcoma (FOS) and 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase (OGG1) messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels were measured by retrotranscription Q-PCR. Patients under prior chronic statin therapy were compared with patients without …
P4570Prognostic interest of HbA1c and plasma glucose assessment on one-year mortality in non-diabetic patients after acute myocardial infarction
2019
Abstract Background The usefulness of the combined assessment of HbA1c and plasma glucose (PG) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in nondiabetic patients remains unclear. Purpose In a large observational study, we aimed to identify the prognostic values of these biomarkers regarding one-year all-cause mortality in nondiabetic patients after AMI. Methods From the “obseRvatoire des Infarctus de Côte d'Or” (RICO) survey database, we included all consecutive nondiabetic patients with AMI (n=6617) from May 2001 to December 2016. Exclusion criteria were: admission known or unknown diabetes, in-hospital death. The primary endpoint was all-cause one-year mortality. The secondary endpoints were: M…
0112: Major improvement in one-year mortality in elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction in relation with early PCI and recommended medicat…
2016
Background and aimOutcomes of AMI patients have substantially improved over the past 2 decades. Whether similar trends are observed in elderly (≥75 years of age) and younger patients has not been extensively studied.MethodsWe analysed one-year mortality of elderly vs younger patients in 4 nationwide French survey carried out 5 years apart from 1995 to 2010. Consecutive STEMI and NSTEMI patients (≤48 hours from onset) were recruited over one-month periods. Among 10610 patients included in the 4 surveys, 3389 (32%) were aged 75+.ResultsFrom 1995 to 2010, the proportion of 75+remained stable in NSTEMI (1995: 36%, 2010: 38%), but decreased in STEMI patients (1995: 30%, 2010: 25.5%, P=0.006). Us…
Intraspecific Differences in Spectral Reflectance Curves as Indicators of Reduced Vitality in High-Arctic Plants
2017
Remote sensing is a suitable candidate for monitoring rapid changes in Polar regions, offering high-resolution spectral, spatial and radiometric data. This paper focuses on the spectral properties of dominant plant species acquired during the first week of August 2015. Twenty-eight plots were selected, which could easily be identified in the field as well as on RapidEye satellite imagery. Spectral measurements of individual species were acquired, and heavy metal contamination stress factors were measured contemporaneously. As a result, a unique spectral library of dominant plant species, heavy metal concentrations and damage ratios were achieved with an indication that species-specific chan…
Secondary Stroke Prevention in Polish Adults: Results from the LIPIDOGRAM2015 Study
2021
Background: The purpose of the study was to evaluate secondary stroke prevention in Poland and its association with sociodemographic factors, place of residence, and concomitant cardiovascular risk factors. Material and methods: From all patients in LIPIDOGRAM2015 Study (n = 13,724), 268 subjects had a history of ischaemic stroke and were included. Results: 165 subjects (61.6%) used at least one preventive medication. Oral antiplatelet and anticoagulation agents were used by 116 (43.3%) and 70 (26.1%) patients, respectively. Only 157 (58.6%) participants used lipid-lowering drugs, and 205 (76.5%) were treated with antihypertensive drugs. Coronary heart disease (CHD) and dyslipidaemia were a…
Frailty Scales for Prognosis Assessment of Older Adult Patients after Acute Myocardial Infarction
2021
We aimed to compare the prognostic value of two different measures, the Fried’s Frailty Scale (FFS) and the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), following myocardial infarction (MI). We included 150 patients ≥ 70 years admitted from AMI. Frailty was evaluated on the day before discharge. The primary endpoint was number of days alive and out of hospital (DAOH) during the first 800 days. Secondary endpoints were mortality and a composite of mortality and reinfarction. Frailty was diagnosed in 58% and 34% of patients using the FFS and CFS scales, respectively. During the first 800 days 34 deaths and 137 admissions occurred. The number of DAOH decreased significantly with increasing scores of both FFS…
Scanning electron microscopy of Antarctophthirus microchir (Phthiraptera: Anoplura: Echinophthiriidae): Studying morphological adaptations to aquatic…
2012
The members of the Family Echinophthiriidae (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) are unique among insects because they infest hosts with an amphibious lifestyle. During their evolution they developed morphological traits that are reflected in unique features. The SEM is a helpful tool to analyze them. Knowing in detail the external structure of these lice is the first step to understand the whole process that derived from the co-adaptation of lice and pinnipeds to the marine environment. For the first time, we studied the external structure of all stages of an echinophthiriid louse. The results are discussed in the light of their evolutionary, functional, and ecological implications. Plasma lipidomic profiles and cardiovascular events in a randomized intervention trial with the Mediterranean diet.
2017
Background: Lipid metabolites may partially explain the inverse association between the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and cardiovascular disease (CVD).Objective: We evaluated the associations between 1) lipid species and the risk of CVD (myocardial infarction, stroke, or cardiovascular death); 2) a MedDiet intervention [supplemented with extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) or nuts] and 1-y changes in these molecules; and 3) 1-y changes in lipid species and subsequent CVD.Design: With the use of a case-cohort design, we profiled 202 lipid species at baseline and after 1 y of intervention in the PREDIMED (PREvencion con DIeta MEDiterranea) trial in 983 participants [230 cases and a random subcohort …
Valanginian isotope variation in glendonites and belemnites from Arctic Svalbard: Transient glacial temperatures during the Cretaceous greenhouse
2010
Oxygen and carbon isotope data from Cretaceous (Valanginian) glendonites and belemnites from Arctic Svalbard are presented. Oxygen isotope data from well-preserved glendonites, in conjunction with the ikaite to glendonite pseudomorph transition temperature, are used to provide an estimate of the oxygen isotope composition of ambient seawater. Calculation of such a factor is essential for robust paleotemperature estimates. Using this methodology, our paleotemperatures calculated from the oxygen isotope compositions of coexisting belemnites yield cool temperatures (4–7 °C) consistent with transient glacial polar conditions during the Cretaceous greenhouse. Cool polar temperatures during the C…
