Long-term graft function of adult rat and human islets encapsulated in novel alginate-based microcapsules after transplantation in immunocompetent di…

2005

We describe the results of the first study to show that adult rat and human islets can be protected against xenogenic rejection in immunocompetent diabetic mice by encapsulating them in a novel alginate-based microcapsule system with no additional permselective membrane. Nonencapsulated islets lost function within 4–8 days after being transplanted into diabetic Balb/c mice, whereas transplanted encapsulated adult rat or human islets resulted in normoglycemia for >7 months. When rat islet grafts were removed 10 and 36 weeks after transplantation, the mice became immediately hyperglycemic, thus demonstrating the efficacy of the encapsulated islets. The explanted capsules showed only a …

Three de novo losses and one insertion within a pericentric inversion of chromosome 6 in a patient with complete absence of expressive speech and red…

2008

A 32-year-old female patient, observed for 30 years because of a distinctive phenotype consisting of a dysmorphic face non-progressive deficit of motor control, lack of speech development, reduced sensitivity to pain, with a known, complex interstitial deletion 6q14 within a de novo pericentric inversion 6p11.2;q15, was re-examined at the molecular level. Applying the Infinium HumanHap300 BeadChip array and BAC-based FISH we found two new non-contiguous microdeletions in addition to the one detected previously by high resolution G-band analysis. A 360 kb loss in band 6p12.3, containing the genes RHAG, CRISP1, 2, and 3, and PGK2, a 1.15 Mb loss in 6p12.2-p12.1, containing the genes PKHD1, IL…

CD40 activation in human pancreatic islets and ductal cells.

2008

Aims/hypothesis: CD40 expression on non-haematopoietic cells is linked to inflammation. We previously reported that CD40 is expressed on isolated human and non-human primate islets and its activation results in secretion of IL-8, macrophage inflammatory protein 1-beta (MIP-1β) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) through nuclear factor-κB and extracellularly regulated kinases 1/2 pathways. The objective of this study was to identify the pattern of gene expression, and to study viability and functionality affected by CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40L) interaction in human islets. Furthermore, we have studied the CD40-mediated cytokine/chemokine profile in pancreatic ductal cells, as they are…

Spontaneous Resolution of Delayed Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage in the Single Eye Following Needling in Congenital Glaucoma

2017

Suprachoroidal hemorrhage (SCH) is a rare, but potentially vision-threatening event with poor long-term visual prognosis. At present, there is disagreement whether surgical intervention or conservative treatment is superior in the management. We report on a case of spontaneous resolution of severe SCH after needling procedure in the only eye of a young patient with congenital glaucoma.A 43-year-old woman with congenital glaucoma was scheduled for bleb needling in her only eye. Preoperative best-corrected visual acuity was 20/40 and intraocular pressure 20 mm Hg. On the third postoperative day, she developed a massive delayed SCH with appositional (kissing) choroidal bullae and visual acuity…

Delayed Coloanal Anastomosis for rectovaginal fistula after colorectal resection for deep endometriosis

2016

The deep infiltrating endometriosis, defined as a subperitoneal infiltration of endometrial implants of ≥ 5 mm involving not only the colorectal tract but also rectovaginal septum, vagina and bladder often requires a challenging surgery. Endometriosis nodes of the rectovaginal septum, if symptomatic, need a resection of the involved colorectal tract with colorectal or coloanal anastomosis. Unfortunately in these cases is not uncommon the possibility of a postoperative rectovaginal fistula (RVF), caused by the weakness of the septum that must be skeletonized to completely remove the endometriosis nodes. Here we present a case of anastomotic leakage with high RVF after colorectal resection an…

Giant pseudocyst of the abdominal wall following incisional ventral hernia repair: an extremely rare clinical entity. Report of a case

2021

The appropriateness of colonoscopies at a teaching hospital: magnitude, associated factors, and comparison of EPAGE and EPAGE-II criteria.

2011

Background The growing demand for colonoscopies and inappropriate colonoscopies have become a significant problem for health care. Objectives To assess the appropriateness of colonoscopies and to analyze the association with some clinical and organizational factors. To compare the results of the European Panel of Appropriateness of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (EPAGE) and the EPAGE-II criteria. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Endoscopy unit of a teaching hospital in Spain. Patients Patients referred for colonoscopy, excluding urgent, therapeutic indications, and poor cleansing. Main Outcome Measurements Appropriateness of colonoscopies according to the EPAGE criteria. Results From 749 c…

A very rare cause of retroperitoneal bleeding in young patients: do not forget the occurrence of a ruptured left gastroepiploic artery aneurysm!

2019

Visceral artery aneurysms represent a very rare condition. The affected patients usually present as emergency secondary to the sudden rupture of the aneurysm or as an incidental finding on imaging. In this setting, gastric and gastroepiploic aneurysms account for only about 4% of all the splancnic aneurysms. Since ruptured visceral aneurysms present a high mortality, a prompt and adequate (surgical or radiological interventional) treatment is mandatory. Due to the difficulty in achieving an adequate transcatheter access in some cases the emergency laparotomy may represent the only chance for the recover of the affected patients. We report two cases of ruptured left gastroepiploic aneurysms …

Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET) of the kidney: a case report.

2004

Abstract Background A case of Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET) of the kidney in a 27-year-old woman is presented. Few cases are reported in the literature with a variable, nonspecific presentation and an aggressive behaviour. In our case, a radical nephrectomy with lymphadenectomy was performed and there was no residual or recurrent tumour at 24-month follow-up. Methods The surgical specimens were formalin-fixed and paraffin embedded. The sections were stained with routinary H&E. Immunohistochemistry was performed. Results The immunohistochemical evaluation revealed a diffuse CD99 positivity in the cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells. Pankeratin, cytokeratin AE1/AE3, vimentin, desmin, S…

Conservative vs. Surgical Management of Post-Traumatic Epidural Hematoma: A Case and Review of Literature

2015

Patient: Male, 30 Final Diagnosis: Acute epidural hematoma Symptoms: — Medication: — Clinical Procedure: Observation Specialty: Neurosurgery Objective: Unusual clinical course Background: Trauma is the leading cause of death in people younger than 45 years and head injury is the main cause of trauma mortality. Although epidural hematomas are relatively uncommon (less than 1% of all patients with head injuries and fewer than 10% of those who are comatose), they should always be considered in evaluation of a serious head injury. Patients with epidural hematomas who meet surgical criteria and receive prompt surgical intervention can have an excellent prognosis, presumably owing to limited unde…
