GRB 050904 at redshift 6.3: observations of the oldest cosmic explosion after the Big Bang

We present optical and near-infrared observations of the afterglow of the gamma-ray burst GRB 050904. We derive a photometric redshift z = 6.3, estimated from the presence of the Lyman break falling between the I and J filters. This is by far the most distant GRB known to date. Its isotropic-equivalent energy is 3.4x10^53 erg in the rest-frame 110-1100 keV energy band. Despite the high redshift, both the prompt and the afterglow emission are not peculiar with respect to other GRBs. We find a break in the J-band light curve at t_b = 2.6 +- 1.0 d (observer frame). If we assume this is the jet break, we derive a beaming-corrected energy E_gamma = (4-12)x10^51 erg. This limit shows that GRB 050…

Predicted temperature-increase-induced global health burden and its regional variability

An increase in the global health burden of temperature was projected for 459 locations in 28 countries worldwide under four representative concentration pathway scenarios until 2099. We determined that the amount of temperature increase for each 100 ppm increase in global CO2 concentrations is nearly constant, regardless of climate scenarios. The overall average temperature increase during 2010–2099 is largest in Canada (1.16 °C/100 ppm) and Finland (1.14 °C/100 ppm), while it is smallest in Ireland (0.62 °C/100 ppm) and Argentina (0.63 °C/100 ppm). Insolation cycles as a major control equatorial Indian Ocean primary production

Analysis of a continuous sedimentary record taken in the Maldives indicates that strong primary production fluctuations (70 to 390 grams of carbon per square meter per year) have occurred in the equatorial Indian Ocean during the past 910,000 years. The record of primary production is coherent and in phase with the February equatorial insolation, whereas it shows diverse phase behavior with δ 18 O, depending on the orbital frequency (eccentricity, obliquity, or precession) examined. These observations imply a direct control of productivity in the equatorial oceanic system by insolation. AbstractFossils of megaherbivores from eight late Pleistocene 14C- and OSL-dated doline infillings of Ajoie (NW Switzerland) were discovered along the Transjurane highway in the Swiss Jura. Carbon and oxygen analyses of enamel were performed on forty-six teeth of large mammals (Equus germanicus, Mammuthus primigenius, Coelodonta antiquitatis, and Bison priscus), coming from one doline in Boncourt (~ 80 ka, marine oxygen isotope stage MIS5a) and seven in Courtedoux (51–27 ka, late MIS3), in order to reconstruct the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions of the region. Abstract A high resolution study, with a centennial scale resolution, has been performed on the calcareous plankton assemblage (coccolithophores and planktonic foraminifera) at Ocean Drilling Program Site 976, Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean), focusing on the interval between 20 and 9 ka, in order to reconstruct changes in surface and subsurface water dynamics and productivity. The Miocene record of talpids and dimylids in south-western Europe is very scarce. In the present work, we study for the first time the talpids and complete the description of the dimylids, already started with a new species of the genus Plesiodimylus from the Ribesalbes–Alcora Basin (MN4, lower Aragonian, early Miocene) by Crespo et al. (2018). The talpids recovered inRibesalbes–Alcora comprise themost common Desmanodon daamsi and Desmanella fejfari, for which the last known occurrence is recorded here. Die seit 2001 im Rahmen eines PCR (Programme Collectif Régional) durchgeführte Gemeinschaftsarbeit über das Ende des Neolithikums und den Beginns der Bronzezeit im Zentrum Nordfrankreichs führt heute zu einer neuen Periodisierung der Zeit zwischen 3600 und 1800 v. Chr. in acht Etappen. Obwohl, insbesondere bezüglich der Transition zwischen dem Mittel-und dem Jungneolithikum einerseits und dem Jung-und dem Endneolithikum andererseits, auch weiterhin einige Lücken bestehen, erlaubt dieser präzisere Rahmen die Hauptetappen im Zentrum Nordfrankreichs mit denen der benachbarten Regionen zu synchronisieren, um eine dynamischere Vision der kulturellen Phänomene vorzuschlagen.

7 pages; International audience; Stratigraphic measurement and sampling on three sections (Vergol, La Charce, and Montclus) through Valanginian deposits from the Vocontian Basin (southeastern France) reveals the occurrence of centimetre thick ochre-coloured layers, which can be correlated from one section to another. At least twelve of these are identified in sediments dated from the Pertransiens to Furcillata ammonite Zones. These horizons appear similar to previously described Oxfordian and Aptian bentonites, also from the Vocontian Basin.
