Industrial odour pollution and human health: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

Abstract Objective To conduct a systematic review to evaluate the association between residential or occupational short- and long–term exposure to odour pollution from industrial sources and the health status of the exposed population. Methods The searches were conducted in Medline, EMBASE and Scopus in April 2021. Exposure to an environmental odour from industrial sources in population resident near the source or in workers was considered. We considered outcomes for which there was a biological plausibility, such as wheezing and asthma, cough, headache, nausea and vomiting (primary outcomes). We also included stress-related symptoms and novel outcomes (e.g. mood states). Risk of bias was e…

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Anesthesia and Critical Care Residents in Spain.

2021

Background: The pandemic caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has substantially changed the activity in Spanish healthcare centers. Residents who face pandemics are vulnerable physicians with different knowledge and experience. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the Anesthesia and Critical Care residents and to establish its formative and personal consequences. Methods: A 35-question digital survey was developed, and was distributed among Anesthesia and Critical Care residents in Spain. The quantitative variable "Objective Formative Impact Score" (PIOF) was defined, being proportional to the impact on formative routines. Results: Several pa…

EQ-5D-3L for Assessing Quality of Life in Older Nursing Home Residents with Cognitive Impairment

2020

Background: Quality of life (QoL) is recognized as an important patient-reported outcome measure. Assessing QoL in older people with cognitive impairment is a challenge due to discrepancies in the collection of data via proxies versus self-report. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the self-reported EQ-5D (including the EQ index and EQ visual analog scale (VAS)) in nursing homes residents with cognitive impairment and to analyze its validity based on scales included in the comprehensive geriatric assessment. Methods: Cross-sectional, multicenter study analyzing the feasibility, acceptability, reliability, and validity of the EQ-5D based on 251 self-administered questi…

Public Health physicians and empathy: are we really emphatic? The Jefferson Scale applied to Italian resident doctors in Public Health.

2013

Large gaps in care quality resulting from ineffective communication between health providers, patients, and other health care organizations have been documented. Research suggests that effective, empathic communication positively influences health outcomes. Many studies focused on the assessment of clinicians empathy, while there is still a lack of evidence on the role and level of empathy for public health medical doctors, especially during their postgraduate education. The aim of this study was to assess empathy level of public health residents, and to investigate differences in empathy scores using a validated questionnaire. The Italian version of the Jefferson scale of Physician Empathy …

Mortality Risk Assessment at the Admission in Patient With Proximal Femur Fractures: Electrolytes and Renal Function

2021

In patients over 65y.o. who were surgically treated for a hip fracture, electrolytes have not been specifically studied as predictors of mortality. The main purpose of this study was to assess whether electrolytes and chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages, evaluated at admission, could represent a pre-operative prognostic factor in this population. Moreover, the role of epidemiological and clinical parameters was analyzed with and without a surgical timing stratification. This retrospective study included 746 patients. For each patient, their age, gender, fracture classification, Hb value, comorbidities, ASA class, chronic kidney disease, creatinine levels, electrolytes and surgical timing w…

2007

From a conceptual and methodological reflection about an effective association of system based cellular automata and multi-agents models, the simulation model VisualSimores was conceived in order to give even partially, a response concerning the impact of residential mobility in urban areas. According to the goal to develop a support system for urban planning, the major interest of this approach is to focus on the relationship between two separately observable phenomena: the residential mobility of household on one hand and the urban dynamics on the other hand. Then it becomes particularly important to identify the reasoning that helps to establish a correspondence between the demands of di…

Appealing to women : a rhetoric analysis of Mitt Romney's and Barack Obama's election debates in the 2012 presidential election

2013

Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, kuinka Yhdysvaltojen vuoden 2012 presidentinvaalien ehdokkaat Barack Obama ja Mitt Romney pyrkivät vetoamaan naisyleisöön. Tarkoituksena on pystyä nimeämään kommunikaatiostrategioita, joita presidenttiehdokkaat käyttävät puheissaan. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu kahdesta ensimmäisestä väittelystä, joihin kandidaatit osallistuivat vuoden 2012 lopulla. Aineisto on rajattu naisia koskeviin puheenvuoroihin. Presidentinvaaleja edeltäviin väittelyihin liittyvät läheisesti vetoamisen ja väittelyiden käsitteet, sekä lisäksi tutkimuksen kohteena oleva käsite yleisö. Väittelytilanne noudattaa kysymys-vastaus -kaavaa, mutta antaa mahdollisuuden presidenttiehdokkai…
