Anatomical distribution of sentinel lymph nodes in patients with endometrial cancer: a multicenter study.
2022
ObjectiveSentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping represents the standard approach in uterine confined endometrial cancer patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomical distribution of SLNs and the most frequent locations of nodal metastasis.MethodsThis was an observational retrospective multicenter study involving eight high volume gynecologic cancer centers in Italy. We reviewed 1576 patients with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of endometrial cancer from September 2015 to June 2020. All patients underwent total hysterectomy with salpingo-ophorectomy and SLN mapping.ResultsA total of 3105 SLNs were mapped and removed, 2809 (90.5%) of these were bilateral and 296 (9.5%) unila…
A retrospective analysis of oral and maxillofacial lesions in children and adolescents reported in two different services.
2021
Background Most epidemiological studies involving oral and maxillofacial lesions assess only data from histopathological analysis. This may lead to a poor notification of diseases whose diagnosis is predominantly clinical. Aim: To evaluate and to compare the frequency of oral and maxillofacial lesions in children and adolescents in two different types of services: Oral Medicine clinic service and laboratory service. Material and methods The records of patients ≤ 19 years attending the Oral Medicine clinic service and records from the laboratory service in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology of the Dental School of a university were analyzed. Results 828 records from the Oral Medicine clinic se…

Epidemiological dynamics of norovirus GII.4 variant New Orleans 2009.
2015
Norovirus (NoV) is one of the major causes of diarrhoeal disease with epidemic, outbreak and sporadic patterns in humans of all ages worldwide. NoVs of genotype GII.4 cause nearly 80–90 % of all NoV infections in humans. Periodically, some GII.4 strains become predominant, generating major pandemic variants. Retrospective analysis of the GII.4 NoV strains detected in Italy between 2007 and 2013 indicated that the pandemic variant New Orleans 2009 emerged in Italy in the late 2009, became predominant in 2010–2011 and continued to circulate in a sporadic fashion until April 2013. Upon phylogenetic analysis based on the small diagnostic regions A and C, the late New Orleans 2009 NoVs circulati…
Outcome of liver cancer patients with SARS‐CoV‐2 infection: an international, multicentre, cohort study
2022
Background & Aims Information about the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in patients with liver cancer is lacking. This study characterizes the outcomes and mortality risk in this population. Methods Multicentre retrospective, cross-sectional, international study of liver cancer patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection registered between February and December 2020. Clinical data at SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis and outcomes were registered. Results Two hundred fifty patients from 38 centres were included, 218 with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and 32 with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). The median age was 66.5 and 64.5 years, and 84.9% and 21.9% had cirrhosis…
Characteristics and treatment regimens across ERS SHARP severe asthma registries
2020
Little is known about the characteristics and treatments of patients with severe asthma across Europe, but both are likely to vary. This is the first study in the European Respiratory Society Severe Heterogeneous Asthma Research collaboration, Patient-centred (SHARP) Clinical Research Collaboration and it is designed to explore these variations. Therefore, we aimed to compare characteristics of patients in European severe asthma registries and treatments before starting biologicals. This was a cross-sectional retrospective analysis of aggregated data from 11 national severe asthma registries that joined SHARP with established patient databases.Analysis of data from 3236 patients showed many …

Clinical Phenotype and Response to Different Lines of Therapy in Elderly with Immune Thrombocytopenia: A Retrospective Study

2020
Purpose Insufficient knowledge of primary immune thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) in the elderly, together with a lack of clinical trial data, has resulted in wide variation in treatments. Here, we present a study focused on clinical characteristics of ITP in older subjects at diagnosis integrated with the subsequent course of the disease and treatment history. Methods In a retrospective monoinstitutional study, we evaluated >65-year-old patients with primary ITP. Clinical characteristics at the time of diagnosis were described and analyzed. We aimed to delineate whether subsequent lines of therapy influenced the number of relapses. In addition to initial regimens, we reported subsequent trea…
Evolution of syphilis incidence in Sibiu county (Romania) over a period of 10 years (2009-2018).
2021
Syphilis is the most common sexually transmitted disease that mainly affects socially active people, with a fluctuating worldwide incidence over the years. A retrospective study was conducted over a period of 10 years (2009-2018) that included 396 patients with syphilis diagnosed and monitored by Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital, Romania. During this period (2009-2018), we observed a decrease in the new cases of syphilis by 35.90%, and the average syphilis incidence was 9.90 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Syphilis was diagnosed more frequently in men with an average age of 35.39 years, from urban areas, with and educational level of grades 9-12, unmarried, workers, or without oc…
Shigella sonnei biotype g carrying class 2 integrons in southern Italy: a retrospective typing study by pulsed field gel electrophoresis
2006
Abstract Background Emergence and global dissemination of multiresistant strains of enteric pathogens is a very concerning problem from both epidemiological and Public Health points of view. Shigella sonnei is the serogroup of Shigella most frequently responsible for sporadic and epidemic enteritis in developed countries. The dissemination is associated most often to human to human transmission, but foodborne episodes have also been described. In recent years the circulation of multiresistant strains of S. sonnei biotype g carrying a class 2 integron has been reported in many countries worldwide. In southern Italy a strain with similar properties has been responsible for a large community o…
Evaluation of Risk Parameters in Bone Regeneration Using a Customized Titanium Mesh
2019
PURPOSE The aim of the study was an evaluation of risk factors for an innovative bone regeneration technique using a customized titanium mesh that was tested in a clinical setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 65 patients with 70 grafting procedures of osseous defects of the jaws with a customized titanium mesh together with Advanced- and Injectable-Platelet-Rich Fibrin (A- and I-PRF), resorbable membranes, and bone grafting materials. Exposures of the meshes and grafting outcome were analyzed according to a novel classification as (a) punctual and (b) tooth width or complete exposure of the mesh (c). No exposure was stated as (d). RESULTS In 37% of cases, exposur…
