The viable but not culturable (VBNC) state has been studied in detail in bacteria. It has been suggested that the VBNC state also exists in eukaryote cells, such as wine yeasts, including Brettanomyces in particular. We investigated the VBNC state in this yeast, focusing on the conditions for entry and exit, and the morphological and metabolic modifications associated with this state. We added sulfite (0.8 mg.L-1 molecular SO2) to induce the VBNC state. Increasing the pH of the medium inactivated the sulfite, allowing the cells to exit from the VBNC state and to become culturable again. AbstractA new study of the patere baccellate from the Tomba del carrettino at Ca’ Morta offers the opportunity to re-examine the typology of the ribbed bowls of Vetulonia/Colmar type and to re-evaluate their funerary contexts. These vessels appear in central and southern Etruria at the end of the eighth and the beginning of the seventh century BC, the site of Vetulonia being considered as their main production site.Ferdinando Sciacca’s (2005) classification of the ribbed bowls of Vetulonia/Colmar type is supported by solid evidence ; it has advanced the subject significantly, but Sciacca’s model nevertheless raises some questions in terms of the hierarchy of the criteria that were chosen.Du…

On the basis of two novels by Ángeles Mastretta, Arráncame la vida and Mal de amores - whose publication is separated by a ten years interval – I have attempted to show how the female character responds to a specific project of representation and writing. The present thesis emphasises both the variety of characters in the two novels and the constants that allow establishing a "system of characters" corresponding to the exploration of the subject matter dear to the novelist: the status of women in the society, their possibilities to act as well as the relationships they enter, which have a prominent place in Mastretta’s novels. The last letters in the courtship of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning deal of course with all the practical aspects of what was to be the run away match of the century. But they also reveal feelings, attitudes and modes of writing that will grow and become the trademark of the mature Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poetry, in particular "Aurora Leigh". One finds in them an interest in ordinary people's lives, a sense of humour, a resistance to masculine authority and an assertion of equality between the genders that will all be at the heart of her great poem.

Nell’ambito della revisione dei dati archeologici noti sull'area dei Nebrodi (Sicilia settentrionale), in occasione del progetto dottorale in corso, è stato possibile porre l’attenzione su due reperti, fino ad oggi noti in letteratura come ‘rocchi di colonna’ da Mistretta, l'antica Amestratos. Questo contributo esamina le vicende che hanno portato a quest’errata identificazione e, più in generale, la storia degli studi di topografia antica sul centro nebroideo.
