RHEUMATHOLOGIC DISEASES IN ADOLESCENCE: PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE OF A DIFFICULT AGE

2015

Background: Chronic disease significantly interfere with the quality of life at every age, expecially in a period of life characterized by the need to assume a role in the society and the research of a specific identity. The personal image is often destroyed by the disease, the long term sequelae of pharmacological treatment. Adolescents are frequently obligated to quit many possibilities of experience with peers. Objectives: We realized a plurispecialistic approach to adolescents with rheumatologic diseases, with the figures of neuropsychiatric, psychologists, rheumatologists, endocrinologists, to give an answer to the complex requests of these patients. Methods: We evaluated 20 patients w…

Intra- and Juxta-Articular Osteoid Osteoma Mimicking Arthritis: Case Series and Literature Review

2023

Background: Intra- and juxta-articular osteoid osteomas are rare, representing less than 10% of all osteomas. Compared to the classic diaphyseal or metaphyseal site of long bones, they often have an atypical onset, a longest diagnostic delay, and frequent initial misdiagnoses, with pictures that can mimic inflammatory monoarthritis. We aimed to describe a case series, and to provide a literature review of this uncommon and misleading tumor location. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients referred to three pediatric rheumatology centers, with a final diagnosis of articular osteoid osteoma. A review of the literature was additionally conducted. Results: We included 10 pati…

Impaired Trunk Posture in Women With Fibromyalgia

2018

A cross-sectional study. The main goal of the study was to analyze posture of Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) in women compared with healthy subjects to establish if posture assessment could be useful to characterize the syndrome. Secondarily, we explored the impact of sedentary behavior on trunk posture.Pain has been associated with poor static postures, however there is little information on the effect of FMS, which is characterized by widespread pain, on trunk posture. One hundred eighteen women with FMS and 110 healthy counterparts participated in this study, in which trunk posture was assessed. The thoracic kyphosis, forward head position, and shoulder position (basal and maximum protraction…

The Italian observational study on severe osteoporosis (ISSO): 24-month results on incidence of fractures and adherence to treatment

2016

Objective To estimate the proportion of patients with very severe osteoporosis (those covered by the reimbursement criteria of the Italian National Health Service) experiencing new vertebral and non-vertebral fragility fractures in the first 24 months of a new anti-osteoporosis treatment. Methods Prospective observational study in men and post-menopausal women (aged > 21 years) initiating anti-osteoporosis treatment for very severe osteoporosis. Eligibility was based on teriparatide (TPD) reimbursement criteria in Italy: Incident of vertebral or hip fracture during anti-resorptive treatment (minimum 1 year), or at least three prevalent severe vertebral fractures, or two prevalent severe ver…

Physical Fitness Evaluation of School Children in Southern Italy: A Cross Sectional Evaluation

2018

The aim of this work was to evaluate the fitness levels of different physical components in schoolchildren in southern Italy and identify age-related effects of physical performance. One hundred and fifty-four schoolchildren with ages ranging between 6 and 10 years (age 8.1 ± 1.45 years; 33.70 ± 10.25 kg; 131.50 ± 13.60 cm) were recruited for the investigation. Each scholar underwent a fitness-test battery composed of five elements. A Hand-Grip Strength Test to assess the strength of the hand muscles, a Standing Broad Jump Test to assess lower body explosive strength, a Sit-Up Test to exhaustion to evaluate abdominal muscular endurance, a 4 × 10-m Shuttle Run Test to assess agility, and a 2…

Isolated osteoblastoma of the cuboid bone: A case report and review of the literature

2020

Osteoblastoma is a relatively rare, benign, bone-forming tumor, commonly observed in the second and third decades of life. Spine and the long tubular bones are the most common sites of involvement. Osteoblastoma is infrequently seen in other sites, including the bones of hand and foot. A rare case of a 35-year-old man that presented an osteoblastoma of the cuboid bone is reported. The patient was treated with surgical resection and grafting. After the intervention, the patient recovered with no clinical and radiological evidence of recurrence after one year of follow-up. Several cases of osteoblastoma-like variant of osteosarcoma of the cuboid have been previously reported, but, to our know…

Architecture in cortical bone and ultrasound transmission velocity

1993

The square of ultrasound transmission velocity in a material is correlated to the modulus of elasticity, which is an indicator of its mechanical properties. This might make the measurement of ultrasound transmission velocity useful in the noninvasive diagnosis of bone diseases. Bone, however, is not an isotropic material but is architecturally structured. The aim of our study was to investigate and especially to quantify the influence of architecture in cortical bone on ultrasound transmission velocity. Twenty-two rectangular, flat specimens of cortical bone were prepared from diaphysis of fresh pig radius. Ultrasound transmission velocity was measured parallel and perpendicular to directio…

Autoreactivity to mouse C1q in a murine model of SLE.

1995

A large proportion of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients develop glomerulonephritis, coincident with the appearance of autoantibodies to C1q, the Fc-recognizing collagen-like subcomponent of the first component of complement, C1. The MRL/lpr/lpr mouse is an established model for SLE, developing both antinuclear and anti-type II collagen autoantibodies, and rheumatoid factors(s), exhibiting reduced complement levels and later on developing glomerulonephritis and often arthritis. We report here an age-dependent decrease in serum C1q levels coincident with the development of IgG2b autoantibodies reactive with mouse C1q in MRL/lpr/lpr mice. Unlike IgG2b, although high levels of IgM, Ig…
