2011

This paper presents the case of the resistance to dilution in workshops in and around Glasgow in 1915 and 1916. Dilution was devised by the British government as a way of reorganising the means of production in order to better suit the requirements of the war industry. The government resorted to several Acts of Parliament to implement dilution, censor the press and jail and/ or deport local shop stewards who engaged in a fierce movement of resistance. This short episode of the working class movement in the West of Scotland opposed the shop stewards not only to the British government and their employers but also to their official union representatives. Although it proved to be a failure, the…

So the Horizon Line Vanishes': Landscape and Abstraction in England from the 1930s to the 1950s

2010

This paper explores the tension between abstraction and figuration in English landscape painting from the 1930s to the 1950s, a transitional period marked by opposition between these two semiotic systems. The tension between tradition and new departure runs through the paintings and texts by John Piper and Peter Lanyon.

A model for instructional design in mathematics implemented in teacher education

2018

International audience; This paper presents a model for instructional design in mathematics and reports from student teachers' experimentation with it in secondary school. The model is framed within the theory of didactical situations in mathematics. It contributes to the research field through the notion of an epistemological model, which provides an enhanced understanding of the stage of ‘conception and a priori analysis' of didactical engineering. Findings show how the model is instrumental in creating student teachers' awareness of the impact of the milieu on the nature of the knowledge developed by the pupils.

2018

The essay concerns the italian disciplin on the opt-in class actions, as ruled by article 140 bis of consumer code, with special reference its recourse for damages actions downstream an anticompetitive behaviour. The Author examines the main cornerstones of the collective redress mechanism, also in comparison with other foreign experiences, such as the US federal one , by focusing on its pros and cons of the domestic regime, mainly the bottleneck for the access to the remedy (the requirements for assessing whether the "class" exists or not) and the likely outcome of a equitative quantification of individual damages to be awarded. The latter, in particilular, is addressed as an embedded dete…

Biologically active organic compounds, especially plant promoters, in algae extracts and their potential application in plant cultivation

2015

Scientific efforts taken during the past decades undoubtedly have proven that algae are organisms wealthy in various chemical substances such as carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals, as well as polysaccharides, polyphenols, phlorotannins, pigments, unsaturated fats, sterols, and of course growth promoting substances like phytohormones. It is noteworthy that among the many biologically active compounds obtained from seaweeds, plant hormones seem to be the most essential for enhancing the growth and development of crop plants. This fact is well reflected in over 60 years of the long history of controlled application of algae origin products as natural fertilizers in crop production. Neverthe…

La corruzione privata e la riforma dell'art. 2635 c.c.

2013

The paper explores the Italian discipline on private bribery, which has recently undergone significant reform through law no. 190/2012.
